Is governing The Golden State on Rob Reiner’s bucket list?

A source close to Rob says the director hopes to mount a campaign for California’s highest political office in the 2010 race.

“Rob wants to run for governor. He’s very unhappy with how the state’s being run and believes he could do a better job than [current governor] Arnold Schwarzenegger,” the insider tells PageSix.com.

This isn’t the first time Rob’s name has been bandied about as a candidate. In 2005, the longtime Democrat was urged by party supporters to toss his hat in the ring against Republican candidate Schwarzenegger, who was seeking reelection.

After months of speculation, Rob told the LA Times in December of that year that he wouldn’t run: “This is a decision that has taken me a while to come to. Essentially, I’ve been having a lot of discussions with my wife and family. I have young children, and they really are not all that keen on me doing this right now,” he said. “They know what’s involved, and they know how difficult it can be.” Back then, Rob’s two sons were 12 and 14 years old, and his daughter was 7.

But this time around, the 60-year-old (who has been active in California politics since 1998, and in 2006 campaigned unsuccessfully for a California proposition to fund state-run preschools), will make a go of it.

Notes the source: “Though Rob had a big comeback with The Bucket List [about a pair of 70-something cancer patients on a quest to live out their unrealized dreams], he feels he could be more useful in politics.”

Rob’s political advisor, Chad Griffin, tells PageSix.com, “Rob has not ruled out running for political office, but he has no current plans to do so.”

In California, governors are elected to four-year terms, with a two-term limit. Arnold’s second term ends January 3, 2011. Campaigns for the next gubernatorial election will likely get under way next year.
