An ugly fight has broken out on the Ugly Betty set.

On Thursday, reports surfaced that Lindsay Lohan was such a diva while filming her guest spot, America Ferrera lobbied to have her originally-scheduled six-episode-appearance cut to four.

But a source tells Usmagazine.com that it wasn’t Lohan who was acting up.

“America couldn’t handle Lindsay stealing her thunder,” the source tells Us.

The New York Post quotes a production source who calls Lohan’s appearance “a mess.

“Lindsay would show up every day with an entourage of people. She smoked 24/7, and after she left, they had to re-paint her dressing room it was such a mess,” the source says.

One of Lohan’s pals counters her dressing room was used by the cast of Fox’s thriller, Fringe.

“So maybe they messed it up,” the source says. “And an entourage? Yeah, she had her sober companion with her, as well as her manager, assistant and Samantha Ronson. Her publicist was there a couple of times. But so what?”

The New York Post also claims the 22-year-old would “obsessively cut pictures of herself out of the tabloids like she was creating some sort of scrapbook and refused to go on set until America was there – it was a power play.”

Lohan accidentally flashed the cast too, the paper reports. For an episode entitled “Granny Pants,” Lohan – who played Betty’s high school enemy – was supposed to “de-pants” Ferrera. But the scene calls for Ferrera to turn the tables – and pull down Lohan’s pants instead.

“Lindsay wasn’t wearing any underwear,” the Post’s source claims.

Counters a Lohan Pal, “Bulls–t! Lindsay wears underwear all the time now. She was wearing a G-string. And it was America’s fault.

“They were rehearsing the scene and America wasn’t supposed to pull Lindsay’s pants down – but she did,” the source adds. “Lindsay was so embarrassed, she started crying.”

Lohan’s pal says it was Ferrera who made filming unbearable for Lohan.

“America was mean to Lindsay,” the pal tells the Post. “Producers give her too much power. Lindsay didn’t do the last two episodes because America didn’t like her and got her kicked off.”

Reps for both actresses are downplaying any drama.

“America is grateful to have had her on the show and thinks everyone should tune in to see how great the episodes are,” Ferrera’s rep told the Post.

Adds Lohan’s rep: “Lindsay was scheduled for six episodes and is appearing in four, but had a lovely time.”

America Ferrera isn’t a fan of The Hills or Gossip Girl.

“Close, genuine female relationships are not what generally gets depicted in movies and TV shows,” she says in the October issue of Seventeen.

“Like, if you’re watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other,” she goes on.

Adds Ferrera, 24: “I mean, I love Blake [Lively, her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-star]; she’s a wonderful friend of mine, but shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean.”

he Ugly Betty star knows girls can be mean, she says, recalling how she has “worked with other girls before and it was pretty catty.”

But working with Lively, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies was “one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve had with girl relationships,” she says.

Before meeting them she says, “I was like, ‘I’m just going to show up to work and be professional – not their best friend.’”

“But a couple of weeks into shooting, Amber and I started talking,” Ferrera tells Seventeen. “She’s a hippie, and I thought we had nothing in common – and now she’s one of my closest friends!”

When Ugly Betty star America Ferrera told Total Request Live last month that Hollywood’s out-of-control young things should stop partying and “get a job,” she probably didn’t mean a job on her own show. Or did she?

According to a source on the set of Betty, which airs on ABC, cast and crew have been excitedly gossiping that embattled actress Lindsay Lohan is in “serious talks” to take on the role of a fallen beauty queen who takes a gig as the assistant manager of the fast food chain where Betty’s dad toils.

“Everyone’s very excited,” the source said. “Of course it brings a lot of attention to the show, and it’s a great part for Lindsay.”

The role is apparently part of a three-episode arc during which Betty befriends Ms. Lohan’s character, who has fallen on tough times since high school. The ravishing redhead has had a difficult year herself, recently completing her latest stint in rehab at Utah’s Cirque Lodge after racking up two consecutive DUI’s this summer.

“It sounds really cute,” our spy burbled of the new opportunity, which of course might be jeopardized by the ongoing Writers Guild strike. “Betty tries to help Lindsay’s character by getting her a job at Mode, the fashion magazine where she works on the show.”

Ms. Lohan’s rep, Leslie Sloane Zelnik, didn’t return calls. But her notorious client could surely learn a thing or two from Ms. Ferrera, who took home an Emmy last year for her comedic portrayal of the lovable Betty Suarez. “I can’t get into trouble because I’m working all the time,” she told Damien Fahey. “I’m too busy working and focusing on what I’m doing to be out partying.”
