Carrie Underwood was overwhelmed to have won “Entertainer of the Year” at the American Country Music Awards on Sunday night, but the moment did turn a little mortifying when she made a sexual reference joke to wanting to see Matthew McConaughey’s “boots” in her acceptance speech.

The Texas-born actor presented Underwood with the big award, but before his official duties he entertained the audience with a story on how he and his brother once took a road trip thru Texas to see Dwight Yoakam perform. While there the brothers tried to “pick up” a few ladies by telling them that they made a livin’ exclusively custom-making George Strait’s boots.

“We’re like, ‘Oh yeah. Say, as I a matter of fact, out in the parking lot, in the trunk of our white Corvette, we have the next year’s new edition white ostrich quill George Strait signed series that he’s gonna wear on tour next year.’ And they got pretty excited about that and said, ‘Well, can we see? Can we see? Can we see?’” McConaughey told the audience. “And we obliged … Point of the story is, we got lucky that night. Thank you, George.”

After taking the trophy from McConaughey, a tearful Underwood caused jaws to drop when she said:

“I don’t know what to say. I got nothin’ … I want to see those boots, Matthew.” (The audience erupted into laughter but somehow we don’t think his leading lady, Camila Alves, was so amused). And clearly, Carrie regretted the spur-of-the-moment sexual advance.

“I’m so embarrassed, I totally embarrassed myself. I just blanked,” Underwood told Tarts backstage, burying her head in her hands. “You want to say something eloquent in a moment like that and I embarrassed myself. I’m sorry Matthew, I’m sorry to my family. I’m totally embarrassed.”

She even admitted that she “blacked out” after hearing her name called and couldn’t remember much between making it from her seat to the stage and then to the press room. But as only the 7th woman in the 42-year history of the awards to take the coveted “Entertainer of the Year” honor, it is no wonder Underwood got caught up in the craziness.

“It is definitely a male-dominated genre of music. But this (winning) is just indescribable. I can’t wait until the day when having a female nominated in the category is no big deal,” she said. “I accept it for all the women before me who kicked butt and never got the recognition they deserve and didn’t get the opportunity to get nominated.”

Mike Fisher, Carrie Underwood romantically linked

Romance is in the air at Scotiabank Place.

Ottawa Senators centre Mike Fisher and former American Idol singer Carrie Underwood are dating and the love match has apparently been going strong for months.

Ms. Underwood, 25, was at the Sens-Toronto Maple Leafs game Saturday night where the Jumbotron “Hug Cam” at the Air Canada Centre spotted her in a private VIP box hugging two people sitting next to her. Mr. Fisher’s parents and his brother, Bud, also a hockey player, were in the box watching the team go down to the Leafs in a 3-1 battle.

The romance apparently began after Mr. Fisher, 28, went backstage following Ms. Underwood’s March 21 concert at Scotiabank Place where she performed before 7,700 country fans. The couple hit it off, say observers, and then began dating some time after their initial meeting.

The struggling Ottawa Senators are in Buffalo for a game Tuesday night against the Sabres. Reached Monday at practice, Mr. Fisher declined to talk to reporters about his romance with the country singer who is a multi-platinum recording artist and Grammy-award winner.

“I can’t comment on anything in my personal life, so that’s about all I can say. I don’t really want to say anything,” he said.

But indications are the romance continues to grow and that the country singer and vegetarian has already met most of Mr. Fisher’s family.

On New Year’s Eve, Ms. Underwood and Mr. Fisher’s sister dropped into Rinaldo’s swanky digs on George Street for some deluxe pampering and pedicures.

“She was here with Mike Fisher’s sister and the staff took good care of them,” said Pat Rinaldo.

“She was very quiet, very sweet and pleasant. She wasn’t demanding at all, everyone loved her and a lot of people recognized her.”

Ms. Underwood was being pampered prior to her going to a New Year’s Eve bash at Jason Spezza’s Westboro home where other players on the team were also guests.

Ms. Underwood is scheduled to perform at the People’s Choice Awards Tuesday night where she is nominated for Favourite Female Artist, Favourite Star 35 and Under, and Favourite Country Song for the song Last Name.

Ottawa fitness trainer Tony Greco, a close friend of Mr. Fisher, says he thinks the couple are made for each other.

“I think it’s serious, I mean he’s really happy with her. They’re a perfect match,” said Mr. Greco.

Mr. Fisher is a big country music fan and is known to have strong Christian values. In the off-season, he devotes his time to hockey camps in his hometown of Peterborough and Kingston through Hockey Ministries International.

Ms. Underwood was raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma and began performing at the Free Will Baptist Church and area talent shows. She won season four of American Idol and parlayed that into great success in country recordings and concerts.

She dated Chace Crawford, an actor from the TV-series Gossip Girl, but that relationship ended some time ago, according to news reports.

American Idol’s biggest star on fame, her love life, and that other blond

On the rumor she was dating Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps: “I swear on everything, on my job, on my house, my dog…That’s how serious I am. It’s all just a lie. Anytime any [media source] ever says ‘a friend said,’ or ‘a close’ whatever – no, they didn’t! It’s just made up. None of my friends would say anything. Ever. About anything!”

On her comment that a taken Tony Romo still calls her: “It was just something that was said in passing, and I would never mean to say anything to hurt anybody or to stir up anything, because I’m just not about drama. At all. I might be mad too if somebody said my boyfriend was calling some other girl. So I can definitely see where she [Jessica Simpson] would be coming from. But I haven’t talked to him since, like, May.”

On whether or not she’s dating someone: “If I say I am or I’m not, as soon as this magazine comes out, it might be the opposite of what I tell you now. In three months, it’ll be ‘Carrie said she’s not dating anybody,’ yet last night, I was out on the town with some guy. He’s going to get mad at me. Everybody’s going to think I’m a liar. It’s just best not to go there.”

On life on the road: “I don’t know how people do it. It’s tiring. It’s hard. Right now I do a lot because I have no reason not to. I don’t have a husband or kids. If I go home, I’m home by myself. I have no reason not to be on the road, no reason not to just get out there and do everything right now, while I’m young enough to, while I can enjoy it. But I think when I get a little older, I definitely want to slow down, just because it’s very stressful. It’s hard on your body, hard on your mind, hard on your emotions.”

On dealing with celebrity: “I knew what I was signing up for, and I’m not complaining at all. I’ve learned how to deal with it, and my life is great, I’m a happy person. What are you going to do? Give it all up? No!”

Carrie Underwood has a message for Oprah, Diddy, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and even Heidi and Spencer: Don’t publicly back candidates for office.

“There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly,” she tells TV Guide, as excerpted by Just Jared. “I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate.

“It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she goes on. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to.

“Music is where you go to get away from all the BS,” adds Underwood, who recently apologized for saying ex Tony Romo still calls her. “Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape.”

Carrie Underwood was in New York for the unveiling of her wax figure, but she also addressed Jessica Simpson, ex-boyfriends and Faith Hill at Madam Tussauds on Thursday.

Talking about the life-like replica of herself, Underwood said: “Honestly, it looks so good, it’s almost kind of creepy looking at myself.”

When asked by reporters about Simpson, who is dating Underwood’s ex-boyfriend Tony Romo, the country star brushed off rumors of a feud.

“I met her once and she seemed really nice so I don’t have a feud with anybody,” said Underwood, who then commented on Simpson’s recent crossover to country music.

“I think it’s great that country music just seems to be opening their arms to people that want to be a part of it,” she said. “They let me in when they didn’t have to and they’re doing the same thing for a lot of other people.”

Underwood also spoke about her thoughts about ex-boyfriends and the role the media plays in her relationships.

“I generally have been friends with ex-boyfriends. Sometimes the whole media thing adds, well not sometimes, every time it adds a little obstacle,” said the American Idol winner. “But before all this, everybody I had ever dated I was friends with.”

In response to Hill’s recent sexy photo shoot for the cover of Shape magazine, Underwood had nothing but praise for the 41-year-old country crooner.

“I think it’s great!” she said. “Three kids, shoot. She’s what we should all aspire to be because she’s one person that’s very, very confident in herself.”

Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen: the catfight between Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson continues, and someone’s about to draw blood!

Carrie’s claws have come out following Jessica’s recent interview, in which she gushes over current boyfriend (and Carrie’s ex) Tony Romo, saying, “I just told him today, ‘You’re the love of my life.’ ” In the interview Jessica also says she’s unconcerned by Carrie’s claims of getting calls from Tony, admitting that she checks his phone logs and knows exactly who he does and does not call.

While Tony, 28, may be pleased with Jessica and her declarations of love, his ex, Carrie, has quite a different point of view.

“She finds Jessica’s love of putting her life on display pretty desperate,” a pal of the “Before He Cheats” singer tells OK!. “She laughed at the People cover, because it’s the same one Jess did about John Mayer — same smile, same look, except she’s a little fatter.”

Now the blondes will take their battle to the country charts, but Carrie is unconcerned. “Carrie doesn’t think fans will spend money to watch Jess warble through a few badly written songs,” says her friend.

For a 25-year-old singer in the spotlight, Carrie Underwood has had her share of guy drama.

The American Idol winner opens up in Allure’s September issue about dating Dallas Cowboys player Tony Romo, Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford and a boyfriend who cheated on her in college.

“We were both small-town people doing very big things, and we relied on each other, dealing with fame,” she says of Romo. “I don’t know. The phone will ring and it’ll be him, and I’ll maybe not answer.”

On her recent split with Crawford, she explains: “We didn’t have a fight. No one cheated. It plain didn’t work.”

One of her relationships from her days at Oklahoma’s Northeastern State University could have inspired her hit “Before He Cheats.”

“I don’t want to name names, even though he probably deserves it, but he fooled around,” she says. “Oh, yeah – And lied.”

Underwood says it’s difficult to find friends she can trust – and guys who like her for the right reasons.

“You never really know why somebody wants to be around you, or if they do genuinely like you,” she says. “I wish everyone had a label on their forehead so you could automatically tell their intentions. Sometimes you just wish that no one wanted anything from you.”

Despite her first album becoming one of the best-selling country albums ever, Underwood has financial fears – and still drives the Mustang she won on Idol

“But what if I don’t earn any more next year?” she asked. “What if something awful happens? I’m not at that point where I say, ‘OK, I’ve made enough.’ I don’t know what the limit is.”

The singer maintains that she’s not competitive with her country competitors. “We work harder than the guys do, because we have to!” she insists.

“That Faith Hill thing was a joke,” she says, referring to Hill expressing shock when the Idol beat her for CMA’s Female Vocalist of the Year award. “I talked to her, and she was like, ‘Carrie, I’m sorry.’”

Underwood’s dream? “I want to have a girls-only tour and get some awesome chicks together, and have us all go out and – kick butt.”

Carrie Underwood isn’t crying a river over her recent split from Chace Crawford.

“We broke up over text, so it’s like ‘peace out,’” Underwood, 25, told Extra at the Idol Gives Back taping in Hollywood Sunday. “It was completely mutual, we’re both fine.”

She said they haven’t talked “in a while, but I mean, I don’t dislike him. So it’s no big deal.”

Their relationship “just didn’t work,” Underwood added, “and we both knew it didn’t work and [there are] no hard feelings at all whatsoever.”

Dating in the public eye is “difficult … because people always make a lot bigger deal of things than they actually are,” she said.

Usmagazine.com was the first to report on their split. They called it quits because of their conflicting schedules, sources told Us.

“They couldn’t spend time together,” a source said. “It was hard.”
