Like most celebrities — especially those in the world of R&B and rap music — Chris Brown is usually surrounded by bodyguards, anytime he ventures out in public. However, a reliable L.A. source filled me in on the reason Rhianna’s alleged beater-boyfriend has so many folks protecting him these days.

Seems the music superstar has been targeted with death threats the authorities believe are actually legit.

In recent months, Brown has rarely been seen without a minimum of three very visible bodyguards — of the humongous variety — whenever he’s stepped outside his home.

On top of that, there reportedly are always three or four others who are ‘‘in cognito,’’ said a longtime Los Angeles Police Department insider — stressing at least one or two have been women, ‘‘but who are easily as tough as any man.’’

According to the source, Brown’s threats have been coming from a ‘‘group’’ (though authorities think it could easily be just a single person) calling itself the ‘‘Women’s Protection Action League.’’

The alleged threats, I’m told, are completely tied to the charges the entertainer badly beat Rhianna on Grammy Awards weekend earlier this year.

Brown is said to be ‘‘totally paranoid’’ about the threats on his life and has become obsessed with his security.

There have been some indications the potential assassin could be disguised as a paparazzi — yet another reason for Brown to despise the ever-present shutterbugs who stalk his every move.

Chris Brown, who’s been accused of beating up Rihanna, sure seems to need a lot of protection for himself. Brown was spotted at Blade Lounge in Miami’s Fontainebleau “surrounded by bodyguards.” Our spy said, “He had at least three security people with him at all times.” Later that night, he upped his detail to five when he went to Liv nightclub in the same hotel with Khloe Kardashian and Omarion.

On the day Chris Brown took to YouTube to say he’s “not a monster,” a photographer sued the R&B singer, saying Brown’s bodyguards beat him as he tried to take pictures at a gym.

Robert Rosen sued Brown and LA Fitness International, claiming he was assaulted by a bodyguard after snapping pictures in a gym in Universal City. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for multiple claims, including assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence.

The suit states Rosen snapped photos of Brown and friends on the basketball court at the LA Fitness on May 13, roughly a month after the singer’s arrest for allegedly assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna. Brown has pleaded not guilty in that case, which is scheduled for a hearing Thursday.

Rosen’s lawsuit states he fell down a flight of stairs after being chased by Brown’s bodyguards, who assaulted him. It does not allege violence by Brown.

Rosen also claims he was blocked from leaving the gym by a gym employee. A phone recording at LA Fitness’ headquarters said the company was closed on Wednesday evening and did not allow a message to be left.

“This is a specious and frivolous lawsuit by one of the paparazzi seeking publicity and a payday,” Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, said in a statement. “He’s done this before and lost. We will vigorously defend against this.”

The filing does not state Rosen’s employer, but a paparazzo with the same name filed a similar lawsuit against Pierce Brosnan in 2007. That suit was later dismissed. Rosen’s attorney did not return a phone call Wednesday afternoon.

The lawsuit was filed on the same day Brown, 20, defended himself in a video posted on YouTube.

Brown is shown leaning in and speaking directly into the camera, which appears to be positioned in front of a bowling lane. He talks about his new album called “Graffiti,” and a single expected this summer.

Then he says: “Everybody that’s haters, they just been haters. All my real fans, I love you. I ain’t a monster.”

Brown, who’s been charged with felony assault and making criminal threats against Rihanna on the night of the Grammy Awards in February, did not mention his former girlfriend.

It’s not immediately clear when or where the video was shot. A publicist for Brown didn’t immediately respond to a requests for comment Wednesday about the video.

Rihanna and Chris Brown are both moving on – but with opposing films, not significant others.

A source tells us that the sexy songbird, who’s in New York to work on her new album, is also taking acting lessons while in the Big Apple.

“Rihanna will start filming ‘Personal Protection’ later this year,” says our insider. “She’s not ready, actingwise, yet, so she’s meeting with a coach.”

Additional casting for the project will resume when Ri learns the celluloid ropes.

Similarly, Brown is making a leap to the big screen. The embattled R&B star – who will face the music in an L.A. court Thursday for his alleged assault on Rihanna – has an untitled project that’s said to be a “tearjerker,” according to a pal. “Chris plays a homeless character,” says the friend. “It’s a real rags-to-riches story and should be good for his image.”

Brown will film for three weeks over the summer in both L.A. and Memphis.

But before tongues start wagging, our first insider stresses that the exes are not trying to one-up each other with rival roles – acting was a natural progression for both.

As for the love department? Neither Ri nor Chris has become serious with anyone else. “Chris is being a player. There’s no one exclusive,” says Brown’s pal. Rihanna, meanwhile, has been linked with everyone from Def Jam labelmate Kanye West to rapper Aubrey (Drake) Graham, but she isn’t getting hot ‘n’ heavy with anyone, either.

“Kanye is all over Rihanna’s album – not all over Rihanna!” says our insider. In addition to working together, the two are longtime pals; they even took in an evening showing of “Star Trek” at the Union Square multiplex last week.

Graham, the tween “DeGrassi” star turned rapper, is just a friend of Rihanna’s. “She’s feeling him but wants to take things slow. Right now they’re just chilling,” says our Ri source.

Graham himself echoed this sentiment during a recent interview with Hot 97. “I’m being honest, man,” he said. “She’s just a friend, that’s all.”

Says a second pal of the “Umbrella” singer: “RiRi needs the focus to be on her talents right now, not the bumps in her personal life. She doesn’t want anything else to overshadow her career.”

Chris Brown’s attorney is seeking L.A. police records to try to determine who leaked information — including the photo of a bruised and battered Rihanna that was sent to TMZ — about the 20-year-old singer’s alleged beating of his girlfriend.

Mark Geragos, Brown’s lawyer, filed two motions Wednesday in the L.A. Superior Court seeking all police records involving the department’s own internal affairs investigation and the personnel records of 24 LAPD staff, including officers and supervisors, Usmagazine.com confirms.

Geragos wrote that he wants the documents to see if he can discredit or attack the credibility of police witnesses during a preliminary hearing in early June. Geragos wrote that if the files contain evidence of police misconduct, they may form a basis for the case against Brown to be dismissed.

The circumstances surrounding the leaked photo remain a priority for Geragos.

“This highly prejudicial photograph was sold by a LAPD officer to the entertainment website [TMZ],” Geragos wrote. “The purpose of the leak was necessarily for profit and to vilify Mr. Brown and poison the potential jury pool.”

He added that the photo — which he said “violates a variety of criminal and regulatory prohibitions” — was seen by “hundreds of thousands of viewers” and remains on TMZ.

Although the LAPD is still involved in their own investigation regarding the photo, the Associated Press reports that a department spokesman said Thursday morning there was no update.

The motions are scheduled to be heard May 28.

Mike Tyson – who was accused of beating Robin Givens and was convicted of raping Desiree Washington – says he can relate to Chris Brown, the 19-year-old singer who allegedly beat Rihanna.

“It’s none of my business, but you know what I say about that? I understand the situation. I understand passion with young kids,” Tyson, 42, tells MTV News.

“My personal opinion about that is, he’s just a baby,” adds the former heavyweight champ, who is the subject of a new documentary, Tyson, out Friday. “He’s just a little baby that don’t know how to handle his emotions when it comes to a woman. And he probably hears this and thinks, ‘I know how to handle my emotions’; we all think we do.

“But the fact [is],” Tyson continues, “you look at this person and you might be crazy in love, but we don’t know how to handle those feelings.”

What could have led Brown to beat Rihanna, 21? Tyson blames a “pimp mentality” that is prevalent among young people. “Now you’re a fly guy and a cool guy [you think] … you have to be hard like that,” he says.

In the MTV interview, Tyson appears contrite about his history of violence towards women.

“You can’t abuse them,” he tells MTV. “It’s really sick what you [can] do. She has a space in your heart and you believe you care about her more than anybody in the world.

“Do I think it’s right to beat up a woman? No — hell no,” he adds. “Have I hit a woman before? Hell yeah. Was I wrong? Hell yeah. I’m a product of that environment. Do I regret ever doing that? Hell yeah. Would I do it again? Never.”

Brown — who has pleaded not guilty to two felonies, assault and making criminal threats — is due back in court April 29.

Just one week after pleading not guilty to allegedly assaulting Rihanna, Chris Brown showed up to a L.A. tattoo parlor with a new woman.

Natalie Mejia, who starred in the CW’s Pussycat Dolls Presents: Girlicious reality show, tells RadarOnline.com that Brown is a “gentleman.”

“It’s true we did visit a tattoo parlor together, but I can’t say if we got anything done because that is personal,” adds the dancer, who was photographed with Brown by X17online.com.

(Rihanna got a gun tattoo in March because “it’s powerful, it’s protection,” her tattoo artist BangBang told Us then.)

Mejia wouldn’t get into specifics on her relationship with Brown, but said, “Things are going well between us.

“[Brown] has treated me like a [sic] gentleman at all times actually and there are no complaints,” she continued.

On her MySpace page, Mejia went on: “Love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don’t and believe everything happens for a reason.”

Brown is due in court next on April 29.
