PEOPLE magazine scored the first pictures of Clay Aiken and baby son Parker (along with the unsurprising “I’m gay!” interview) for $500,000 after, sources said, OK! bowed out. “We were in the running,” an OK! source said, “but then [new editorial director] Kent Brownridge passed.” We reported last week that Brownridge was loath to pay large sums for exclusives. Instead, he opted for a lame Kim Kardashian cover. Brownridge’s arrival has already seen the loss of editor Sarah Ivens, executive editor Rob Shuter and reporter Laura Schreffler. A rep said, “We did bid on the Clay story but thought it was just all right, not phenomenal.”

Initially, the big celebrity news this week was Clay Aiken’s coming out story, published exclusively in People magazine.
While Aiken’s announcement was interesting in and of itself, more compelling is the backstory behind the People deal. Apparently, the economy isn’t just having an impact on Wall Street — it’s affecting the celebrity magazine world, too.
Exclusive photos of Clay and his son Parker went for an underwhelming amount compared to the multimillion-dollar price tag that accompanies a Jennifer Lopez or Jolie-Pitt agreement. Aiken’s deal cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000 according to several sources privy to the negotiations (a rep for People said “We don’t comment on the specifics of any deals”).
The low dollar amount wasn’t necessarily due to waning interest in Aiken — one editor admitted that his magazine had been trying to get the singer to do a tell-all for a substantial sum long before the baby was in the picture. Instead, People, had little competition for the photos, and in turn, no one to drive the price up.
“Gone are the days when any celebrity gets millions of dollars for their photos,” says one magazine editor. “Economically, it doesn’t make sense, and there is only so long that you can keep saying ‘It’s good for the brand.’ People is the magazine that’s most well-off, that has the finances right now to take on these exclusives.”
OK! magazine’s Brian Strong confirmed that the weekly mag did participate in negotiations for the photos. Us Weekly, who in the past has bid on photos of Brad and Angelina, among others, was not part of the Aiken bidding, and neither were Life & Style or In Touch.
OK! is said to be watching its finances a little more closely, especially now that it’s hired a new general manager, Kent Brownridge. But Strong says the economy hasn’t priced OK! out of the exclusives game. “The magazine is absolutely not changing its attitude toward big exclusives,” Strong says. “When there’s a big story out there, the magazine will continue to compete at a high level.”
Compete they might, but consumers are feeling the economic crunch as well. With some exceptions, shelling out the cash at the grocery-store cash register isn’t a priority when times are tough.
“Sure, everyone is curious to see Matthew McConaughey and his baby, but is it worth it?” says the editor. “For millions of dollars and only a small bump in sales, it isn’t worth it for the magazine, and when the economy is the mess it is now, it makes more sense to look at the pictures (while) waiting in line instead of buying the thing.”

Clay Aiken posed with his baby son, Parker, on the cover of this week’s People Magazine, opening up for the first time about his often speculated about sexuality and proclaiming, “Yes, I’m Gay”. Just a few years ago Lance Bass posed with an almost identical headline and now the former American Idol runner up is ready to be a new father out of the closet. The cover also proclaims, “I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things.” There will be a lot more to come when the issue comes out, but for good for Clay for having the courage to be honest and what an adorable baby boy!

Clay Aiken is “thrilled” and “so excited” about the birth of son Parker Foster, he wrote in a blog post on his official site Friday.
“The little man is healthy, happy, and as loud as his daddy,” the American Idol said of the 6 lb., 2 oz. baby born at 8:08 a.m. in North Carolina.
Aiken, 29, referred to Parker’s mom Jaymes as “my dear friend.” The baby was conceived using in vitro fertilization.
“Mama Jaymes is doing quite well also,” he wrote. “The Aiken family, the Foster family, and the Parker family are all thrilled.”
The crooner has consistently avoided questions about his sexuality.
“People don’t want to have that type of stuff pushed, people who are living in Omaha or in Charlotte or wherever,” Aiken told Access Hollywood in April.
“They don’t want stuff like that pushed in their face,” he added. “I don’t think that’s necessary and that’s also not what I’m here for. I mean, I went on Idol to be a singer, I went on Idol to be an entertainer and that’s what my priority is.”

Idol Clay Aiken’s producer is pregnant with his child, TMZ.com reports.
TMZ has learned Clay Aiken is going to be a daddy. In case you didn’t process that, Clay Aiken is going to be a daddy.
Here’s what we know. Multiple sources tell us the mother is Jaymes Foster, a record producer and Clay’s best friend. He lives at her home when he’s in L.A.
We’re told 50-year-old Foster, who produced several Aiken CDs, is due in August. She’s the sister of record mogul David Foster. She divorced a few years back and has no kids. Aiken is 29.
We’re told Foster was artificially inseminated. But Clay is a lot more than sperm — we’re told he will have an active role in raising the child.
No immediate word from Aiken’s rep.
Jaymes Foster (who is reportedly in her late 40s) was artificial inseminated with the 29-year-old singer’s sperm, according to the report.
Aiken lives with Foster – described as his “best friend” – when he’s in L.A. and plans to be involved with parenting their child, TMZ reports.
The baby is due in August, the Insider reports.
The crooner has consistently avoided questions about his sexuality.
“People don’t want to have that type of stuff pushed, people who are living in Omaha or in Charlotte or wherever,” Aiken told Access Hollywood last month.
“They don’t want stuff like that pushed in their face,” he added. “I don’t think that’s necessary and that’s also not what I’m here for. I mean, I went on Idol to be a singer, I went on Idol to be an entertainer and that’s what my priority is.”

The pop superstar will be releasing his eagerly-awaited album ‘On My Way Here’ on May 6 — his first collection of original songs since 2003. And since Clay fans are just “Aiken” to hear new music, satisfy your sweet tooth with the inspiring first single, written by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder.

It’s the only way to explain why he brought a hulking, 7-foot tall bodyguard to the celebrity-heavy “Spamalot” third anniversary party at Pigalle on Wednesday night, which Sawyer attended with husband Mike Nichols. “Clay stood there with the bodyguard all night,” said our spy. “He stays a few feet away from him and follows him around. Apparently, Clay gets mobbed by fans, but this party was just other celebrities, so it was peculiar.”
