Actress Eva Mendes made sure she was scrubbed free of perfume during scenes with Joaquin Phoenix in new film We Own The Night – because the actor hates flowery scents.

The pair play lovers in the new film and Mendes paid attention when her co-star announced he hated fragrance on a woman.

She tells Wenn, “Joaquin doesn’t like perfume that much. He told me that in a conversation just hanging out one day.

“So I said, ‘Note to self, don’t wear perfume.’ Some people’s noses are so sensitive”.

The actress also admits that she is angry at herself for not prolonging a screen kiss with Johnny Depp in 2003′s Once Upon A Time In Mexico – because she has regretted it ever since.

The Latina beauty, 33, admits she has enjoyed numerous big-screen dalliances with a number of cute celebrities – but hates herself for not taking advantage of her intimate scene with her childhood idol.

She says, “All of my screen kisses were the best, though I regret not kissing Johnny for longer… It was the first time I had worked with an actor who I had a crush on as a little girl”.

Eva Mendes has joined the cast of the fantasy thriller “Will Eisner’s The Spirit.”

The project revolves around a rookie cop (Gabriel Macht) who returns from the dead to fight crime as the Spirit from the shadows of Central City. Already on board are Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson.

Mendes has the key role of Sand Saref, a beauty with dangerous curves. She is described as the only woman who could break the Spirit’s heart. As teenage lovers, the two were torn apart when Sand’s father was accidentally killed by the Spirit’s uncle.

Comic auteur Frank Miller (“Sin City”) is directing. Production will begin in October in New Mexico. Lionsgate is scheduled to release the film domestically in 2009.

Mendes, who has appeared in the hits “Hitch” and “Ghost Rider,” next appears in Columbia’s “We Own the Night” opposite Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall.

Eva Mendes, one of Hollywood’s great beauties, was an ugly duckling as a kid. “I had the nickname Bugsy, for Bugs Bunny, because I had buck teeth,” she told Webster Hall’s Baird Jones after a screening of “Live!” a mockumentary about an ambitious TV exec producing a reality show in which contestants play Russian roulette. “I still have buck teeth, but then I was only like 70 pounds, so they really stood out. I never got braces because I am OK with my imperfections. In fact, I like to accentuate my buck teeth when I smile. I just have a big old smile. I never cover my mouth.”
