Jenny McCarthy knows the terror of nearly losing her autistic son, Evan, following a seizure. Evan was saved, while sadly, John Travolta’s son, Jett, died from his seizure, a death that hit Jenny close to home.

“When I first heard the news about Jett, I slowly kind of sat down… because my heart went out to them – you know, such compassion and understanding for what they’ve gone through,” Jenny told Access.

A tragic common bond – Jenny’s 6-year-old autistic son Evan also suffers from seizures.

“Last year, Evan had another seizure where he seized for seven hours on and off and we had to put him in a coma for four days so he wouldn’t go into cardiac arrest,” Jenny revealed. “So looking at Jett, I cried out of fear for my own son, and for, I can’t even tell you how many children, with autism.”

Though she is an outspoken autism activist, Jenny doesn’t want to jump to any conclusions about Jett.

“I have no idea if Jett had autism,” she clarified. “I didn’t see, you know, enough footage, or ever meet Jett to give a diagnosis of my own.”

But if Jett had, in fact, been diagnosed as autistic, Jenny does not fault the Travoltas for keeping it quiet.

“It’s very difficult to go places where everyone sees who you are and then their eyes immediately go to the child ‘cause they know what the diagnosis is and they stare at the child,” she said. “And no one ever wants that feeling, so they tend to keep it quiet.

“They should have the right to keep whatever they want to themselves, and share what they want with the world,” she added.

Despite criticism from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Jenny McCarthy says she helped her son, Evan, recover from autism.??

The actress – who believes the MMR vaccine was to blame for her son’s diagnosis – says a strict no wheat-and-dairy-free diet has changed her son from a quiet little boy who used to flail his arms around to a loving six-year-old.??

“Before the vaccination, he was huggy, lovey, snuggly,” she says in the newest issue of Us Weekly. “Then it was like someone came down and stole him.”

McCarthy, 36, remembers when Evan began to come out of his shell while watching a SpongeBob episode. “I heard Evan laugh…I jumped on the bed and started screaming.”

She adds, “When he finally hugged me, I prayed, ‘Please God don’t let this be the only time.’”??

McCarthy has become an outspoken advocate for autism awareness, often courting controversy along the way (doctors have accused her of creating fear of necessary vaccines). She’s the bestselling author of five books, including her newest, Mother Warriors: A Nation of Parents Healing Autism Against All Odds. She’s also constantly researching on sites like like AgeofAutism.com and GenerationRescue.org

“I made a deal with God,” she explains. “I said, ‘You fix my boy, you show me the way and I’ll teach the world how I did it.’”??

She’s even reached out to John McCain – who spoke about the importance of autism awareness during Wednesday’s debate – without much success.??

“We tried,” says McCarthy – who currently labels herself a Democrat. “McCain had come out and said he thinks there’s enough evidence between vaccines and autism, so I got on a helicopter [to meet him for] an on-camera interview. By the time I got there, the campaign manager said, ‘He’s ahead in the polls, and this is too controversial, and he doesn’t want to go one way or the next.’”??

The mom has avoided one controversial critic: Denis Leary, who blamed “inattentive mothers” for autism in his new book, Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid. (He later said his words were taken out of context)?

Actress and new mom Amanda Peet referred to parents who choose not to vaccinate their children as “parasites” in a recent interview. But despite her public apology aimed at parents of autistic children who believe that vaccines may have caused the illness, Jenny McCarthy hasn’t forgiven or forgotten.

“She (Peet) has a lot of [nerve] to come forward and be on that side, because there is an angry mob on my side, and I like the fact that I can say she’s completely wrong,” McCarthy (whose 6-year-old son has autism) tells the upcoming issue of Spectrum magazine, which hits stands Wednesday.

“I look at (Peet) now and say to myself, ‘That was me before I had autism in my life,’ and until she walks in our shoes, she really has no idea,” McCarthy added.

But McCarthy isn’t the only one taking a stand against Peet. National autism advocacy group Autism United is calling for a boycott of all of the actress’s movies.

“We want to send a clear message to her,” the organization’s Executive Director John Gilmore told Pop Tarts in a statement on Monday. “Ms. Peet’s comments are deplorable and an apology will not suffice. We applaud Jenny McCarthy’s continued efforts and for speaking up for our community.”

McCarthy and her longtime lover Jim Carrey continued their crusade this past summer and led a rally of thousands in Washington, D.C., to put pressure on the federal government to remove toxins from vaccines and fight for fewer childhood vaccinations prior to the age of 2.

But Peet (who is the spokeswoman for Every Child By Two, which raises awareness of the importance of getting children fully immunized by the time they are 2) hit back last month by joining the organization’s co-founder and former first lady Rosalynn Carter for a New York press conference to “dispel the myths” of McCarthy’s campaign.

“I am so distressed with what is happening, and now our mission has become more difficult,” Carter said. “As a result of all this there is an outbreak of measles and whooping cough.”

Earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics put out a casting call for a star-studded spokesperson to combat McCarthy’s campaigning, and so Peet became involved.

Jim Carrey credits girlfriend Jenny McCarthy’s son, Evan, for teaching him how to love.

As he led 8,500 people through the streets of Washington, D.C., Wednesday, hand-in-hand with his daughter, Jane, McCarthy and Evan, the actor led told PEOPLE, “He taught me how to love. And without Evan I might never have seen the greatness of Jenny’s spirit.”

Carrey added to the families, lawmakers and other activists gathered to raise awareness about toxins in vaccines that McCarthy is “the source of all that is good” in his life.

That, he explained to PEOPLE, is how he ended up on the frontline of a political movement. “Jenny’s friends would kind of hint around and say, ‘Hey, it would be kind of cool if you got involved in this,’ and I thought to myself, ‘This is just so inevitable. This just can’t not happen. If you care about the planet and about children, you have to.”

Jim Carrey is head over heels for girlfriend Jenny McCarthy. Just don’t expect to hear wedding bells any time soon.

“I’m happy with Jenny,” the Horton Hears a Who star told Britain’s Weekend magazine. “Although I probably won’t get married again. If you’ve done it twice, you really should stop doing it.” (The actor was previously married to Melissa Carrey and actress Lauren Holly.)

Carrey also offered glowing words for McCarthy’s 5-year-old son Evan, who suffers from autism.

“He’s a wonderful boy,” the 46-year-old actor – whom McCarthy has called the “autism whisperer” – said. “And he teaches me so much. I play with him in a way that makes him want to be part of the gang, and Jenny says I get him past certain fears.”

Take, for example, Evan’s aquaphobia.

“I can get him into the water,” Carrey said. “Although it took a few hours of acting like it was the greatest thing in the world to get him to do it.”
