Oh, what’s in a number? When that number is a celebrity dress size – a lot.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has come out swinging against those in the media who have taken note of big sis Jessica Simpson’s fuller figure.

“How can we expect teenage girls to love and respect themselves in an environment where we criticize a size two figure?” Simpson-Wentz wrote on her MySpace Celebrity blog on Wednesday.

But she seems to be a little … off when it comes to gauging her sister’s current clothing size. A size two?!

Simpson is one of the many curvaceous stars who claim to be able to squeeze into the teeny size.

Kim Kardashian came under fire in September after telling OK! magazine that she’s a two – meaning she could swap clothes with svelte “Regis & Kelly” host Kelly Ripa and tiny Christina Aguilera.

And, of course actress Jennifer Love Hewitt famously used the petite size as a shield against critics of her bikini body declaring, “a size 2 is not fat!”
We think Love Hewitt (and the others mind, you) looks just fine – but they can’t all be a size 2.

“Clearly there’s a psychological piece to clothing size,” says Lynn Grefe, CEO of the National Eating Disorder Association. “Sadly, people believe that you are your size, that the size is a reflection of how good you are or how successful you are.”

Size is definitely a mental thing, agrees FIT professor and fashion designer George Simonton, but there’s no set manual with dimensions for “real” sizes – unless you consult the military.

“There are statistics with the U.S. government,” he says. “For strict measurements you have to go to the Army and Navy for [proper] bust, hip and waist measurements.”

But for non-military duds, sizes are open to interpretation.

“Each designer – believe it or not – fits a little different,” he says. “That’s why there’s always confusion with women.”

High-end designers tend to skew more toward “vanity sizes,” Simonton says, which run larger than, say, their T.J. Maxx counterparts.

Translation: A size two designer dress is more like a size four or six in a department store.

“A lot of women don’t really want to admit what their true sizes are,” he explains. “The only ones that do true sizes are J.C. Penney and Sears. They have certain measurements that their customers demand.”

Those who don’t get the size they want tend to “fib” about it, he says.

But understating one’s size can have negative repercussions for fans, says Grefe.

“For women and celebrities especially to be playing this game … it’s painful when I know people are dying to be these size zeros and twos,” she says.
Grefe adds: “I get disappointed that these women are doing [this]. Do they understand the implications? I don’t think that they do.”

Jessica Simpson’s former trainer, The 5-Factor Diet author Harley Pasternak, is defending the singer’s new fuller figure.

“She has curves where a woman needs to have curves. We all go a little bit up and a little bit down. But she’s healthy,” Pasternak tells Extra.

At Sunday’s Kiss Country Chili Cookout in Pembroke Pines, Fla., the 28-year-old singer — dressed in high-waisted jeans and a double belt — shocked fans with her new curves.

But Pasternak says “she’s still sexy. She’s still a beautiful woman. And I have no problem with the way she looks.”

Adds the trainer, “I think if more people looked the way she looks now, the country would be a lot healthier.”

Say this for Jessica Simpson – she doesn’t hold back.

“I am so excited that I am going to see my boyfriend tonight!” the singer told a crowd of nearly 30,000 fans at Radio 99.9 Kiss Country’s annual Chili Cookoff Sunday at C. B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, Fla., where she shared the bill with Alan Jackson and other country stars.

Smiling, happy and hopping around the stage, Simpson, 28, performed a medley of her pop hit songs (“Angel,” “With You”) during her hour-long show, as well as delivered new songs from Do You Know, her first country album released last fall.

Simpson’s rendition of “You’re My Sunday,” from the country album, was dedicated to her boyfriend, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who was waiting for her in Dallas.

“My boyfriend is a football player, and he takes up my Sundays and now my Mondays,” Simpson told the appreciative audience. “I am sooo happy!”

Posing with Fans
After the show, the songbird did a quick meet-and-greet for about 25 fans of all ages in a secret tent set up in the back of the park. As she entered the enclosure, she cracked, “My six inch heels are not working so well!”

But she sure was. Radiant, smiling and pouring on a warm charm to those who had won a contest to meet her, Simpson posed for photos with all the fans – even though she had to catch a 5:45 p.m. flight to Dallas to see Romo.

Looks like Jessica Simpson needs to nurse Tony Romo back to health!

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback collapsed in the shower following a 44 to 6 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, according to ESPN.com.

Team sources told the sports Web site that medical staff brought in a stretcher, but Romo walked out on his own. He still participated in a news conference shortly after, but had to be helped to the podium.

ESPN reports that Romo may have suffered a rib injury in the second half of the game — the Cowboys’ biggest loss ever — but Romo refused to answer questions about his health.

Jessica Simpson is on the rise when it comes to her professional life as she continues to make movies, music, apparel and the recent launch of her second fragrance “Fancy.” But ever since she hooked up with Dallas QB Tony Romo, it seems the pop princess-turned-country crooner has become more dedicated to nurturing her personal life.

“My personality is now more stay-at-home; right now I’m doing the Christmas tree and everything. I’m in Dallas and its fun, Tony (Romo) hasn’t had Christmas in 7 years because they have football every Christmas and he can’t go home,” Simpson told Tarts last week. “So I’m bringing Christmas to him this year and it’s been fun. I’ve been out ornament shopping and all kinds of stuff, so that’s more of who I am.”

And even though Ms. Simpson certainly has a sexy little bod, she insisted that she survives on sugary delights.

“Believe it or not, I like to bake pies,” she added. “Tony’s favorite is pumpkin pie and I haven’t mastered that yet. Maybe I’m more of a baker; I like to make cakes, more fattening. I make a good carrot cake.”

Hmmm, we don’t know how pleased Romo’s teammates will be with Simpson if their star player turns up to training a little too loved — or love-handled — up …

Looks like Jessica Simpson has a pet name for beau Tony Romo: Cowboy.

At Thursday night’s KJ.97 Randy Carroll’s Christmas Bash in San Antonio, Texas, Simpson, 27, sang three songs and repeatedly referred to “my cowboy.”

(It’s not a huge stretch: He’s the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.)

Before belting out her tune, “Come on Over,” Simpson chatted with country singer Billy Carrington about her love life on stage.

“So, I see you really like doing the guitar playing thing, the hair, the cargo pants you’re wearing – everything I used to date,” she said. “But aren’t you a cowboy, too?”

Switching gears to talk about Romo, whom she never mentioned by name, Simpson said: “You know, I’ve got a cowboy, only my cowboy is a little bit different. I wrote this song for my cowboy – it’s called ‘Come On Over.’ I can’t help it. I want him all the time.”

(Simpson also wrote “Back in My Old Boots” for Romo.)

She also caught a little flack on behalf of Romo.

“Jessica, I hope your boyfriend throws a lot of touchdowns this weekend, cause we’re getting frustrated right now,” singer John Rich told her.

JESSICA Simpson wants to head off to college to study theology – and watching TV was her inspiration. “I’ve been contemplating taking a college course in religion,” the bubblehead told Marie Claire. “I love religion. I remember whenever the book ‘The Da Vinci Code’ came out, the Discovery Channel did this three-night piece on it that I TiVoed and then watched eight times.” We just hope someone advises her not to include that bit in her application letter.
