NICOLE Kidman’s loss is Kate Winslet’s gain. On Monday, Page Six was first to report that Kidman had to drop out of producer Scott Rudin’s movie “The Reader” due to her pregnancy. Now, insiders tell us Winslet has agreed to star opposite Ralph Fiennes in the picture in which “a young man’s decades-long obsession with an older woman in Germany runs headlong into a war crimes trial, where he learns an awful truth,” as its publicity describes it. One source said, “The role was originally written for Kate, but because it was supposed to start filming in the fall, when she was working on ‘Revolutionary Road,’ she had to drop out. Nicole was then hired, but her schedule kept getting pushed back and now she’s pregnant, so the role went back to Kate.” Reps for Winslet and Rudin, whose “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood” are both nominated for Golden Globes, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Hollywood star Kate Winslet finds the glamorization of ultra-thin “size zero” models and actresses “unbelievably disturbing” and says she keeps magazines featuring such women away from her 6-year-old daughter.

“It’s so disturbing because young girls are impressionable from 11 up to 19 or 20 even. Women are very impressionable at those ages,” Winslet told British Broadcasting Corp. television’s “Sunday AM” program.

“They’re trying to figure out who they are, and they want to be loved, and what I resent is that there is an image of perfection that is getting thinner and thinner, and it’s truly upsetting to me.”

Stick-thin celebrities like Kate Moss, Nicole Richie and Victoria Beckham have been criticized as poor role models for young women and accused of contributing to the rise in eating disorders. A major fashion event in Madrid, Spain, banned ultra-thin models from the catwalk earlier this year, and other shows have indicated they plan to do the same.

The 31-year-old Winslet, who burst on the movie scene in “Titanic” and stars in the current romantic comedy “The Holiday,” said it was “unbelievably disturbing what’s going on at the moment” with the popularity of the ultra-thin.

The British actress said she refuses to allow any magazines featuring rake-thin models into her house for fear her daughter, Mia, will see them.

“It’s only a matter of time before she becomes aware of it, and it frightens the life out of me,” said Winslet, who is married to director Sam Mendes.

Winslet said she hoped her success will be an inspiration to others.

“I hope that in some small way I’m able to say, ‘I’m a normal person, I’m doing all right.’ I’ve got a lovely husband and children and I didn’t lose weight to find those things, and those things are what should be important.”

Designers at car manufacturer Jaguar have modeled a sleek new motor on actress Kate Winslet’s curves. The star caught her first glimpse of the new car when she appeared on motor fanatic Jay Leno’s chat show “The Tonight Show” on Friday night.

She says, “Apparently, the man who designed this car decided that I, for whatever reason, was his ideal woman so he, I guess, was inspired by the shape of my body.”

Winslet was moderately impressed with her first look at the new car, but insisted she would have made some changes if she had been involved. She adds, “The headlights aren’t big enough… They’ll have to go… (They) never called me up and said, ‘Would you mind if I did this…?’ It’s kind of flattering… but I would have liked to have been involved.”

The actress reveals she would have turned the car into her own little mini-bar and given the exterior a fancy upgrade. Winslet explains, “A bar under the dashboard… with, like, pink and blue kinda neon lights and umbrellas and pineapples… and wings maybe – kind of a little bit Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and inflatables.”

And now she’s waiting for her freebie: “I absolutely think… that I should get a free car.”

When KATE WINSLET has trouble filming a sex scene she always recalls her intimate moments with LEONARDO DiCAPRIO in TITANTIC. The 31-year-old struggled while shooting a sexy encounter with her LITTLE CHILDREN co-star PATRICK WILSON, so she whisked herself back to her breakout role in the 1997 JAMES CAMERON movie to get herself through the ordeal. She says, “I couldn’t see his face so I just kept thinking that it was me and Leo all over again. That thought really helps get through it.”
