KEVIN COSTNER is set to become a dad again – his wife CHRISTINE BAUMGARTNER is pregnant with the couple’s second child.

The pair welcomed a son, Cayden Wyatt Costner, into the world in May, 2007. The actor has three grown-up children from his first marriage to childhood sweetheart Cindy Silva.

Costner wed designer Baumgartner in September 2004.

He recently told America’s Parade magazine he never thought he’d be starting a second family with Baumgartner – but had to agree to have kids with her before she’d marry him.

He said, “For years, fear kept me from marrying Christine. Christine wanted a child, but I was afraid I couldn’t be an effective father.

“She said, ‘I’m about children. If you want to be with me, if you want to get married, you should know that’s part of my make-up.’

“I woke up and thought, ‘Am I going to lose a beautiful woman who is willing to be with me to my very last breath because I am afraid to say yes to a child?’ That’s all it took. I decided I was not going to miss out on love.”

A spy tells us Kevin Costner recently met with director Ron Shelton at Trader Vic’s in LA to discuss reprising the role of carousing catcher Crash Davis from the 1988 baseball flick. Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon are also expected to return as pitcher Nuke LaLoosh and baseball groupie Annie Savoy, who are now married and owners of a Major League team that Costner manages. Kristen Kerr, recently seen on “Dexter,” is being eyed as one of Crash’s love interests, our insider said.

Kevin Costner, whose “Mr. Brooks” opens today, wore a white T-shirt, jeans and a red baseball cap to lunch at Michael’s yesterday with p.r. poobah Bobby Zarem. Checking out the star were Barbara Walters, Frank Gifford and Herb Siegel, gorgeous Ivanka Trump, Liz Smith and archaeologist Iris Love, Brooke Hayward Duchin, Arnold Scasi and Parker Ladd, and Jerry Inzerillo, the right hand of casino king Sol Kerzner, who invited Costner to bring his band, Modern West, to play at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

Kevin Costner is urging lawmakers to come up with a series of strict new gun legislation – even if it limits his own shooting time. The star admits he loves to hunt and often heads out with his dogs and a shotgun passed down through generations of his family, but he’s the first to admit that America’s gun laws are too weak.

And following the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech college, where English student Cho Seung-Hui killed 32 people in what was the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, Costner feels that legislators should get tough with firearms owners, who refuse to accept their practices could harm others.

He says, “I’m a hunter, I hunt but I think there should be gun laws. I think there should be a lot of gun laws. I don’t want to lose my shotgun but there’s a real good reason why I use my shotgun. It came from my grandpa. His cheek was on it. My dad’s cheek was on it and I go out and hunt with my dogs.

“My gun’s an heirloom to me and my son, one day, when I’m gone, is gonna know, `Your dad hunted with that.’ But, even though with the connection that I have to my gun, can I look at the NRA (National Rifle Association) and say, `I think you’re out of line?’ I can say that.”
