You’d think that after Kiefer Sutherland got arrested for head-butting Proenza Schouler designer Jack McCollough earlier this month, he’d lay off the booze for a while. Well, you’d be wrong! Thursday night, Sutherland and his 21-year-old daughter, Sarah Jude, were at Lower East Side bar Libation. A witness said, “He was drinking Dewar’s on the rocks and chatting with the bartenders.” A rep for Sutherland didn’t return e-mails. McCollough needed surgery for the injuries.

Kiefer Sutherland, charged with assault in New York, is getting support from his cast mates on the long-running Fox TV drama “24.”

Sutherland got a loving hug from co-star Jon Voight and kind words from other “24″ actors while at an advance screening Tuesday night of next week’s season finale.

“Well, it’s, on so many different levels, it is like a family,” Sutherland said on the arrivals line.

“We’ve had, I think, 12 weddings on our show over the last seven years,” Sutherland continued. “I think 16 children have been born. We’ve lost a couple people. So all of those things really pull you together.”

The actor is accused of head-butting a fashion designer at a New York City nightclub early last week. He was charged with third-degree assault.

Reporters at the screening were asked not to bring up Sutherland’s new legal troubles.

No decision has been made on whether the charge will affect Sutherland’s probation for a drunken-driving conviction in Los Angeles.

Sutherland, 42, pleaded no contest in October 2007 to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He served 30 days in jail, in addition to 18 days for violating probation in a 2004 drunken-driving arrest.

“Kiefer is one of my best friends, and he’s a great guy,” said actor Carlos Bernard, an original “24″ cast member who plays fed-turned-terrorist Tony Almeida. “I’ve been around the world with him in bars and social situations, and I’ve never seen anything close to this happening, He always bends over backwards to be courteous with people and to be generous with his time.”

“Kiefer has his own way of doing things, and he has his own energy, and he is awesome,” said Mary Lynn Rajskub. “And every time I work with him, he brings that energy and that commitment.”

This year, “24″ has explored the real-life hot-button issue of torture in the name of national security – something Sutherland’s character, Jack Bauer, has frequently employed. In Monday’s two-part season finale, “you see a real, monumental shift in his character,” Sutherland promised.

The cast is just two weeks out from starting filming of season eight.

“I think, maybe, five scripts (have been finished), so I can’t tell you too much,” Sutherland said. “But where it’s starting right now is probably the most believable scenario that I feel we’ve ever done before.”

The season finale of “24″ airs 8 p.m. EDT Monday on Fox, and the entire seventh season will be released on DVD the following day.

Brooke Shields must think a head-butt spells “chivalry.”

The former “Lipstick Jungle” star is coming to pal Kiefer Sutherland’s defense after he was charged with assaulting designer Jack McCollough in her honor on May 4, just after the Costume Institute gala at the Met.

Shields’ attorney, Gerald Lefcourt, issued a statement yesterday stating, “While at [the after-party at SubMercer,] Brooke was bumped into by Jack McCollough, and Kiefer Sutherland became concerned. Kiefer has always been a gentleman in her company.”

A source familiar with the situation echoed Brooke’s statement, saying that McCollough “may have shoved Kiefer first.”
Meanwhile, Sutherland’s reps are confident that the investigation will prove he “was neither the instigator nor a wrongdoer in this incident.” Police, however, have failed to see Sutherland’s side of the story and have charged him with third-degree assault.

As for the title of “gentleman,” some beg to differ. One of Sutherland’s former co-stars told us how the actor would “go to the bar immediately after he’d finish working. He’d sit there for hours, putting them back. When it was time to go home, he’d be cantankerous and ornery. He was not a pleasant drunk.”

We heard another tale involving a private jet ride back from an event Kiefer attended recently. After sticking to water while in the spotlight, Sutherland boarded the plane and consumed “six alcoholic beverages within a span of 45 minutes,” an insider tells us. “He was so bombed, he got violent and threatened bodily harm to another individual on the plane.” Thankfully, the flight landed before fists flew.

Sutherland — who is on probation in L.A. for five years due to DUI convictions — faces a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail on the fresh charges. He’s due in Manhattan Criminal Court for arraignment on June 9, when the L.A. district attorney will decide whether his allegedly violent behavior constitutes a violation worthy of sending him to jail.

Meanwhile, the actor is expected at an Emmy Awards panel in L.A., and back in NYC next week. “Kiefer will continue everything he was planning on,” his rep told us. “He’s going back to work.”

An investigation by New York City officials into a charge Kiefer Sutherland head-butted a fashion designer at a nightclub will show the star of TV’s “24″ was not a wrongdoer or instigator, his attorney said Monday. Sutherland was charged Thursday with third-degree assault in the incident a week ago at a nightclub at the trendy Mercer Hotel in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan.

The designer, Jack McCollough of the high-end Proenza Schouler fashion house, claims Sutherland broke his nose after an argument at about 2 a.m. Tuesday. Police are also planning to question actress Brooke Shields as a witness.

Representatives for the three celebrities worked to clear up rumors after initially refusing to comment to the Associated Press.

“We are troubled by the untruthful and self-serving information circulating regarding Kiefer Sutherland and events of last Monday evening,” attorney Michael Miller said in a statement. “Out of respect for this law enforcement process, Kiefer Sutherland will not be making any comment.”

Representatives for McCollough said the designer’s injuries were more serious than what was initially noted on the police report. McCollough’s nose was broken in several places and he had to seek medical treatment after the altercation. The police report says he suffered a cut on his nose.

Shields’ attorney, Gerald Lefcourt, wouldn’t comment on whether she had been interviewed by police in the case. He said that many statements had been falsely attributed to Shields regarding the incident, and were likely made by people not at the scene.

“While at the party, she was bumped into by Jack McCollough and Kiefer Sutherland became concerned,” Lefcourt said in a statement. “Kiefer has always been a gentleman in her company. Both Jack and Kiefer are friends of Ms. Shields and she regrets this unfortunate situation.”

No decision has been made on whether the New York City charge will affect Sutherland’s probation for a drunken-driving conviction in Los Angeles.

Sutherland pleaded no contest in October 2007 to driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He served 30 days in jail, in addition to 18 days for violating probation in a 2004 drunken-driving arrest.

Sutherland, who plays dashing federal counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer on “24,” won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for best actor, and has been nominated multiple times for his work on the wildly popular show. The seventh season airs on Mondays.

Kiefer Sutherland has been charged with assault for allegedly headbutting women’s wear designer Jack McCollough after a boozy night at a local club, confirms.

New York police said the charges were filed after he spoke to investigators Thursday, the Associated Press reports.

The 24 star — who is scheduled to start filming the eighth season in late May — arrived at a New York City police station for questioning on Thursday, two days after the incident. He arrived in a Lincoln Town Car with his lawyers. He did not speak to reporters as he entered the precinct house in lower Manhattan.

“Kiefer is here, he walked in a few minutes ago,” an officer said.

Sutherland, 42, was talking to Brooke Shields at a Met Gala after-party when McCollough accidentally bumped into the actress. Sutherland, who appeared intoxicated, then demanded the designer apologize.

McCollough claims Sutherland attacked him after the argument, leaving him with a cut on his face. Detectives also may question actress Brooke Shields as a witness.

This isn’t Sutherland’s first booze-related mishap.

He was arrested in 2004 for DUI and, again, in 2007. In the 2007 case, he pleaded no contest to the DUI charge and was sentenced to 48 days in jail. It’s unclear whether the charges will affect his probation status.

Kiefer Sutherland will surrender to prosecutors as early as Thursday to face a minor assault charge for head-butting a fashion designer at a party, a law enforcement source told the Daily News.

Sutherland will be charged with third-degree assault for the attack on designer Jack McCollough, sources said.

The actor will be issued a desk appearance ticket for the misdemeanor – meaning he won’t be jailed and will be free to travel before he’s arraigned.

“When the lawyer realized paparazzi could be sitting on his [Sutherland's] doorstep for two to three weeks, suddenly he wanted to come in right away and make it all go away,” a police source said.

A friend told The News that Sutherland – who seemed to be channeling his “24″ alter ego Jack Bauer when he slammed his head into McCollough’s at a SoHo nightspot – felt bad about the bizarre display.

“Kiefer is sorry it happened. Absolutely. It’s terribly regrettable,” the friend said.

Still, the friend insisted Sutherland lashed out inside SubMercer because McCollough, a designer for Proenza Schouler, bumped into actress Brooke Shields and didn’t apologize.

“Kiefer was provoked,” the friend said.

Despite reports that Sutherland had skipped town, The News found him at his girlfriend’s Greenwich Village apartment. Sutherland would not comment on the incident. “No, no,” he said, before slamming the door shut.

His lawyer worked out the hasty surrender as soon the media discovered the actor was still in New York. He was originally going to surrender in a few weeks, sources said. Sutherland’s lawyers are expected to work out a cash settlement with McCollough.

Sporting a fresh cut across the bridge of his nose and shielding his eyes with Oakley sunglasses, McCollough told The News Wednesday outside his West Village apartment he’s “doing fine.”

McCollough’s representatives insisted the head smacking at an after-party for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute gala on Monday was unprompted, telling People.com, “Anyone who knows Jack McCollough knows that he would not hurt a fly.”

“He was the victim of a vicious, violent, unprovoked assault.”

Shields’ reps told TMZ.com that she was jostled, but “nothing happened to her.”

Shields was at The Innocence Project’s “Celebration of Freedom and Justice” at Cipriani Wall Street last night, arriving through a side entrance with two guards who politely but firmly kept a reporter away from her.

The actress was all smiles most of the time, but later looked upset and left before dinner was served.

At an after-party for the Met Costume Institute gala at Submercer on Monday, the invulnerable star of “24″ got into an argument with fashion label Proenza Schouler co-founder Jack McCollough which ended with the macho actor head-butting the flamboyant designer and breaking his nose.

The night-life blog Guest of a Guest reported the argument stemmed from a conversation Sutherland was having with actress Brooke Shields, though no further details were provided. (All three were at the gala earlier in the evening.) McCollough reportedly spent the night in the hospital.

Sources told The Post McCollough filed a complaint with cops last night.

Socialite-cum-writer Derek Blasberg, who hooked up with McCollough when he was working as an assistant at Vogue in 2005, alluded to the incident on Twitter, but deleted his account shortly after posting it.

According to one eyewitness account, “Sutherland was really drunk and he got accidentally bumped by McCollough. They started arguing and then he just head-butted him.”

A spy who had spotted Sutherland earlier in the evening at the Gramercy Park Hotel’s Rose Bar tells Page Six, “He was running around wearing a giant feather boa and acting totally crazy. He was dancing feverishly and twirling people around all over the place. He seemed to be quite intoxicated.”

This isn’t the first time that Sutherland has been at the center of a public disturbance. In 2007, a visibly intoxicated Sutherland took a flying leap and tackled a Christmas tree in the lobby of a hotel — footage of which eventually surfaced on YouTube. Sutherland has also twice been arrested on charges of DUI.

A rep for Sutherland did not respond to multiple requests for comment. A rep for McCollough declined to comment on the matter as well.

The hard-partying actor, who founded indie record label Iron Works, has been spotted entertaining radio hosts from St. Louis to Portland in attempt to get his bands airtime. Most recently, Sutherland was at Angels & Kings in Chicago, picking up a tab for 10 after a night of sipping J&B scotch. “He was there promoting his band Billy Boy on Poison,” said his rep.

KIEFER Sutherland (above) revealed himself as a heckler the other night. Atlanta-born guitarist and singer Michael Daves was playing at the Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side when a guy in the audience started screaming, “You mother[bleep]er!” Daves shot back, “I’ll take that as a compliment.” The heckler then bellowed, “You mother[bleep]er – you’re the man!” Daves looked closer and realized the party animal razzing him was Sutherland. “No, you’re the man!” Daves retorted. Both then screamed in unison to the crowd, “We are the men!”
