Donald Sutherland and Kiefer Sutherland

Forget about memorizing scripts and saving the world, Kiefer Sutherland has a new vocation at Glendale City Jail — he’s working on the chow line, serving up lunch and dinner for the inmates.

“I said no seconds!” Jack Bauer in the kitchen.

Lunch will be served in about an hour’s time at the facility where the 24 star is spending 48 days for a DUI conviction, and when the inmates line up for their first hot meal of the day, they’ll find Jack Bauer wielding the ladle, a law-enforcement insider told PageSix.com exclusively.

“Kiefer is currently doing laundry, but he will be serving turkey to the inmates for lunch,” said Glendale City Jail’s spokesperson, Officer Balian.

There are only about 30 inmates in the jail at the moment, but the ranks are expected to swell over the weekend, so Kiefer will probably be working up a sweat as he dishes out delicacies that include meatloaf and mac and cheese.

Serving lunch and dinner will be two of the 40-year-old star’s tasks, although he will be assigned additional duties as they come up, the insider revealed.

The source told PageSix.com that Kiefer had a quiet first night behind bars, going to sleep just after the lights were shut off at 10 p.m., and was up at 7 a.m. He has also brought a pile of books with him to keep him occupied, and is allowed two 15-minute visits a day.

“Kiefer isn’t getting any special privileges,” Balian said. “He’s being very professional and behaving and acting appropriately.”

Kiefer Sutherland is in custody in California’s Glendale City Jail, seen in his prison mugshot (above), he has begun serving a 48-day sentence for his latest DUI charge. Law enforcement officials close to the case revealed the details.

The 24 star was handed the sentence in a Los Angeles courtroom, along with five years probation. He is to spend Christmas and New Year behind bars. He was charged with DUI after being pulled over in Hollywood on September 25 and was found to be driving while three times over the legal limit. Kiefer had a previous drunk-driving conviction in 2004 and was arrested for DUI in 1989 and 1993.

In today’s court hearing, Kiefer was ordered to serve his time in full by March 30. As his hit Fox show is currently sidelined due to the writers’ strike, Kiefer is serving his time as soon as possible and avoid affecting the production schedule. He will be behind bars for the Christmas holiday and will serve the entire 48-day sentence.

The actor is doing his time at the Glendale City Jail instead of a Los Angeles County Jail because of jail overcrowding. The insider tells PageSix.com that this isn’t a pay-for-stay program, and the 40-year-old star will be serving his sentence in Glendale through the regular inmate program with no special privileges.

Calls to Kiefer’s attorney weren’t immediately returned.

Glendale City Jail spokesman said that “it was lights out at 10:00 pm for Jack Bauer.”

Kiefer Sutherland was sentenced Wednesday to 48 days in jail for his latest DUI arrest and for violating probation.

The 24 star, wearing a black pinstripe suit and looking contrite as he showed up to the L.A. courtroom, was sentenced to serve the time consecutively at the Glendale City Jail, sparing him from the much harsher L.A. County facility. He has until March 30 to complete his jail sentence.

Asked if he had any comment, Sutherland, 40, smiled and shook his head as he walked away from the courtroom.

Judge Stuart M. Rice also sentenced Sutherland to five years probation, and he must complete an 18-month alcohol education program and attend weekly therapy sessions for six months.

Sutherland previously released a statement saying, “I’m very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently, and I’m deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers on 24 and at 20th Century Fox. I appreciate the support and concern that has been extended to me these last weeks both personally and professionally.”

TURNS out Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is a huge fan of “24.” When he heard Kiefer Sutherland, who plays counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer, was in Washington, D.C., over the weekend to shoot the hit Fox series, Chertoff paid a visit to the set outside the Willard Intercontinental Hotel to see art imitating his life. “He observed them filming a scene and talked with executive producer Brad Turner,” a rep for the L.A.-based show told The Post’s Melissa Jane Kronfeld. Sutherland even met his real-life counterparts, a group of 15 counter-terrorist FBI agents, who posed for a photo with the star. Producers shot more scenes at the Jefferson and Washington Memorials, the Capitol and in Georgetown. Among the throngs of fans who shouted, “Go Jack!” and “Kiefer, Kiefer!” was Motion Picture Association head Dan Glickman. After wrapping, Sutherland was spotted eating at Nathan’s and bar-hopping at Billy Martin’s and McFadden’s.

IF you have anything signed by Kiefer Sutherland, hang onto it. Autograph collectors are reeling over the “24″ star’s decision to stop putting his signature on memorabilia in the wake of his Sept. 25 bust for DUI, when fans and paparazzi snapped footage of him stumbling after he was pulled over at 1 a.m. “He was one of the best autograph signers there was,” collector Michael Wehrmann told Page Six. “He would always stand and sign for a half hour, but since his arrest, he’s been telling collectors, ‘I don’t do that anymore. You guys screwed me.’ ” Photos taken before the arrest, showing Sutherland looking tired and emotional, were quickly posted on the Internet. The shots could have been introduced as evidence in court, but Sutherland pleaded “no contest.”

A week before a scheduled hearing for Kiefer Sutherland’s September 24 DUI arrest, Sutherland’s attorney Blair Berk was in court entering a no contest plea on her client’s behalf.

In light of the plea, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office issued a sentence recommendation for Sutherland of 48 days in county jail. Though it is merely a recommendation, sources tell Usmagazine.com that it’s likely what will be decided at Sutherland’s sentencing hearing on December 21.

According to the source, Sutherland will turn himself over to serve 18 days of his sentence immediately following the hearing in December, placing him in jail until January 7. Sutherland will then serve the remainder of his time over the summer. The split sentence allows the 40-year-old actor to avoid missing any production days on his hit Fox show, 24.

Sutherland will not be allowed to drive until at least May 8, 2008.

Kiefer Sutherland had a bad 24 hours. The dashing star of the TV drama “24″ was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor drunken driving early Tuesday while still on probation from a similar 2004 conviction.

Sutherland, 40, failed a field sobriety test after he was stopped for making an illegal U-turn in West Los Angeles shortly after 1 a.m., police Officer Kevin Maiberger said.

Sutherland tested over the state’s legal blood alcohol limit of .08 percent, Officer Karen Smith said. Police declined to reveal the level.

He was booked for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol and spent about three hours in jail before he posted $25,000 bail and was released.

Sutherland was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 16, Maiberger said.

Sutherland’s publicist, Evelyn Karamanos, said, “It would be premature to comment at this time.”

Not long before he was stopped, Sutherland was seen at a party at the trendy Area nightclub. The event, in the same neighborhood where the actor was pulled over, was a celebration of the new fall shows on Fox TV, the network that broadcasts “24.”

The city attorney’s office had not received the police report and had not filed charges Tuesday afternoon.

A misdemeanor DUI count would carry a maximum sentence of a year in jail. However, Sutherland also could face a charge of violating probation – the same charge that landed socialite Paris Hilton in jail for 23 days.

In November 2004, Sutherland pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence and was sentenced to 60 months of probation, 50 hours of community service and was ordered to attend an alcohol treatment program, said Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the city attorney’s office.

In May 2005, Sutherland provided the court with proof that he had completed the community service and the treatment, Mateljan said.

Sutherland also had a 1993 conviction for alcohol-related reckless driving, Mateljan said. He had no additional details on either case.

Sutherland won a best actor Emmy award last year for his performance as dashing federal counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer on the Fox TV series “24.” The series is set to return to the air in January.

In the wake of his latest arrest, a nonprofit group that raises money for Los Angeles police causes said it would no longer use Sutherland to present its guest of honor at an upcoming fundraiser.

Sutherland was supposed to introduce his friend, producer Brian Grazer, at the “True Blue” fundraiser of the Los Angeles Police Foundation scheduled for Saturday. Instead, actor Ron Howard will introduce Grazer at the $350-a-plate event at Paramount Studios, foundation President Karen Wagener said.

“Obviously we don’t want to embarrass him … or the department, so introducing Brian on the stage would be inappropriate,” she said.

Sutherland still was on the invitation list for the affair, which was expected to raise $1 million. Wagener said she had not contacted the actor and it was not immediately clear whether he would attend.

Sutherland, who was born in London but went to high school in Canada, was receiving an award of excellence Tuesday afternoon from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists. After his arrest, the event at the official residence of the Canadian consul general was closed to the media.

“We are honoring Mr. Sutherland’s commitment to Canada and to Canadian performers,” Richard Hardacre, ACTRA national president, said in a statement.

Kiefer Sutherland sabotaged the release of his own action figure after setting fire to the prototype on a drunken night out.

The toy, which is modelled on Kiefer’s ’24′ character Jack Bauer, will hit the shops later this year, but would have been out much sooner if the actor hadn’t destroyed the original doll during a rowdy night out with friends.

Kiefer told the National Enquirer magazine: “They tried to come out with one a couple of years ago and they sent it to me for my approval. advertisement

“We took the doll for out a night to have some fun and we’d had some drinks. We sat it on the corner of the table.

“We started torturing him around 11pm and by 2am we set him on fire in the parking lot.

“We got up the next day and there was just this puddle of wax. His clothes didn’t burn, which I thought was pretty cool.

“Then I got a call the next day saying, ‘Did you like the doll?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it was great.’ And they said, ‘Well OK, good, you’ve got to send it back to us because that was a prototype. It took the guy a year to make it.’

“I said, ‘Well, let me look for it, I think I left it in the trailer.’

“This went on for about a week and then I had to just come clean.”
