Marcia Cross’s husband, stockbroker Tom Mahoney, has been diagnosed with cancer, PEOPLE exclusively confirms.

“He is currently under treatment and is responding very well,” the actress’s rep Heidi Slan says.

The two were married in June 2006, and have 23-month-old fraternal twin daughters, Eden and Savannah.

Cross has credited her husband’s love and support for her own happiness. “I think that beauty comes from being happy and connected to the people we love,” the actress told PEOPLE shortly after they were engaged. “And his love makes me feel beautiful.”

No further details of Mahoney’s condition were available.

Marcia Cross certainly looked far from desperate as she enjoyed an afternoon out with her twin daughters Eden and Savannah, 19 months.

Effortlessly carrying her twin daughters – one in each arm – she hoisted the children into the park’s sandpit to play.

And clearly she intended to have some fun herself as she had also removed her own shoes, as well as the twins.

The actress took the twins to Brentwood Park near her Los Angeles home, and seemed to manage the girls just fine without the aid of that celebrity staple – the nanny.

Proudly pushing them along in their double buggy, the 46-year-old star of TV’s Desperate Housewives looked suitably dressed down for a day at the park.

Her casual look was a far cry from the super-starched glossy look worn by her character Bree Hodges.

But refreshingly for the Hollywood star, there were no ridiculous six inch heels being worn for a day out with the children.

The 46-year-old who is married to stockbroker Tom Mahoney, is currently appearing in the fifth series of the hit show.

Marcia and her Desperate Housewives’ co-stars, Dana Delaney, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria Parker and Nicollette Sheridan will be presenters at the Emmy Awards on Sunday.

With her fraternal twin daughters Eden and Savannah turning 1 on Feb. 20, Marcia Cross is recalling all the ways she struggled to have children.

“In my early 40s, I considered adoption, and I tried getting pregnant on my own through a sperm donor, but neither worked out,” the Desperate Housewives star, now 45, tells Health magazine for its new issue.

Pregnancy was a top priority after she married stockbroker Tom Mahoney in June 2006. “We decided to skip our honeymoon and try in vitro after the wedding. I had already been through infertility treatments. It’s very, very difficult to get pregnant in your 40s. It’s costly and tough on your body and your relationship.”

Then the fun really began – finding out that she was going to have twins. “I was terrified,” she admits. “As a mother, being outnumbered is scary.”

So was her nausea, to say nothing of her cravings. “You would think it’d be fun, but it wasn’t. I was up at 2 in the morning eating steak!”

Complications Ensue

Matters became serious during Cross’s pregnancy. “I started having contractions at 28 weeks and had to go on bed rest for two months. I was constantly worried that the babies would be born premature,” she said. “Then, in January, my eyesight started going, and I gained 12 lbs. in one week.”

Both, she said, “are symptoms of preeclampsia, a complication that is life-threatening for mother and baby.”

Admitting she was scared, Cross says, “Within 12 hours of being diagnosed – at 35 weeks – I had a C-section.”

The end result, two healthy girls, was “amazing,” she says. “I’d go through it all again. I don’t want to, but I would.”

And as for keeping her marriage intact now that there are children involved (“I don’t think I’ll have any more kids, but I’m not 100 percent sure we won’t adopt,” she says), Cross also reveals, “If Tom and I are lucky, we try and have a date night.”

It was Christmas as usual for Marcia Cross and her cute twins yesterday.

She took her toddlers to sit on Santa’s lap at L.A.’s Westside Pavilion Mall.

Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher spent the day stuffing FEED bags, which they purchased as Holiday gifts for the Desperate Housewives cast and crew, which in turn will help provide food for African children for one year.

BREE, the character Marcia Cross plays on “Desperate Housewives,” would never pose for full-frontal nude photos, and would never throw such photos in the garbage where an enterprising trash collector could find them. But Cross, 45, did. Photos showing the natural redhead taking an outdoor shower turned up on the Internet yesterday. The nudie snaps were among 200 personal pictures found by an LA firm hired to clear out garbage from Cross’ house in October 2006. She tried to prevent them from being published, but the removal firm was represented by agent David Hans Schmidt, the Sultan of Sleaze infamous for brokering deals for celebrity sex videos. “The pictures were not stolen. When you throw something away, you forfeit that property,” Schmidt said at the time. “She looks absolutely gorgeous. And yes, the carpet does match the curtains.” Mother of twins Marcia said she couldn’t understand why anyone was interested: “I’m pale and bony, just kind of unfortunate-looking all the way around.” Schmidt committed suicide in September after pleading guilty in a plot to extort $1 million from Tom Cruise for the return of his stolen wedding photos.
