WHAT started as a battle of the biceps has turned into the battle of the bulges between stars of Broadway’s “A Chorus Line.”

Last month, Mario Lopez and co-star Nick Adams clashed when Lopez refused to wear his character Zach’s trademark costume of a long-sleeve tan sweater. As first reported by The Post’s Michael Riedel, Lopez wanted to show off his biceps, so he wore a short-sleeve brown shirt in order to display his “guns.”

Lopez also requested that Adams, who plays assistant choreographer Larry, cover up his navy-blue tank top with a baggy hoodie whenever he danced next to Lopez. When Adams does wear just the tank top, it’s in the show’s opening dance number, where he’s banished to the back of the line and can barely be seen by the audience.

Now the rivalry between the hunks has been pumped up with word that the men’s-underwear company 2(x)ist has decided it wants Adams front and center in a shirtless ad and that it passed over Lopez.

“Mario was originally No. 1 on our radar as we planned the campaign,” said an insider. “We were ready to call him with an offer, but then we saw Nick. He’s younger, sexy, more interesting. On top of that, his body was crazy. We set up a meeting, and when he walked in, that was it. We never even looked at anyone else after that.”

Jason Scarlatti, 2(x)ist’s creative director, gave final approval. He told us, “Nick’s very masculine, sexy, modern. It’s totally all about his body. Mario is a good-looking guy, but Nick had it. He’s up and coming, the new face of sexy. He’s original. He’s hot.”

The ad campaign was shot in one day at Via Della Pace restaurant in the East Village. The series of shots shows Adams in an unbuttoned tuxedo shirt, a bow tie and underwear. It will appear in Out’s August issue first and then in other magazines.

Karina Smirnoff and Mario Lopez have called it quits, Smirnoff’s rep confirms to PEOPLE.

“Karina has parted ways with her two year relationship with Mario Lopez,” says Smirnoff’s spokesperson. “The relationship wasn’t heading in the right direction.”

Lopez issued the following statement through his rep: “Karina and I have the utmost respect for each other. She is a phenomenal and talented woman. I support her always and feel blessed to have her in my life.”

The on-again, off-again couple–spotted frolicking in Miami last month– began dating in 2006 when they were partnered together on the third season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

Though they remained mum about their relationship, they were spotted vacationing in Mexico together shortly after coming in second on the hit reality dance competition. The following May, Lopez, 34, and the Ukrainian-born Smirnoff moved in together.

In April, Smirnoff shot down reports of a breakup, telling PEOPLE, “We are going strong.”

Mario Lopez and Dancing with the Stars pro dancer Karina Smirnoff have recently split, a source confirms to PEOPLE.

The couple, who met during Dancing’s third season, never publicly acknowledged their relationship despite the fact that the pair were living together in Lopez’s Los Angeles home. A source tells PEOPLE Smirnoff is moving out of Lopez’s digs.

Lopez’s personal rep, Lisa Perkins, says, “It’s my policy to not comment on my client’s personal life.”

Smirnoff, who is now competing on Dancing’s sixth season with R&B star Mario, has been spotted recently with E! Entertainment personality Michael Yo. The two were seen dancing and canoodling at a recent event at Hollywood eatery Beso.

Lopez, meanwhile, is starring in A Chorus Line on Broadway, and recently returned to the ballroom with 18 Chorus Line dancers to tape a synchronized number to air on Dancing’s 100th episode on May 6. He’s also about to embark on a national tour to promote his upcoming book, Mario Lopez’s Knockout Fitness.

The shapely brunette has stepped out publicly with her former dance partner, Mario Lopez, but was also recently spotted kissing her current one, R&B singer Mario, at the Four Seasons in Los Angeles. “They were making out by the valet with their hands all over each other, and he was whispering in her ear,” said our source. “It was around midnight, so there weren’t many people around.” The two then got in the same car and drove off together with Mario at the wheel. Reps for the show and Lopez did not return calls. Karina’s rep denied the kiss, saying she and Mario have a “professional working relationship.”

Mario Lopez has been two-timing his girlfriend and “Dancing with the Stars” partner Karina Smirnoff with a 21-year-old Hooters bombshell.

The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively he’s been seeing Karina behind his new gal pal’s back.

Meaghan Cooper, an aspiring singer from San Antonio, Texas, and Miss September in the 2007 Hooters calendar, revealed to The ENQUIRER that Mario told her his romance was over with Karina.

“He said he broke up with her,” Meaghan told The ENQUIRER in an exclusive interview. “If he’s still seeing her, he said it’s because he’s just trying to keep things ‘cordial’ between them because of the dancing show. I wouldn’t be parading around with him if he was still with Karina.”

Meaghan claims, “I never would have gone to New Orleans with him if he said his relationship with Karina wasn’t over.”

But Mario may have been telling the Hooters beauty one hoot of a story. We found photos of Karina and Mario together on three separate occasions in the days following his weekend in New Orleans with Meaghan. On May 22, Mario was spotted leaving a “Dancing with the Stars” party with Karin in L.A.; on May 31 the two were photographed together at the Blackberry Curve Launch Party at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The next day, Mario and Karina were snapped arriving at the ALMA Awards in Pasadena, California.

A friend tells The ENQUIRER, “Mario may be keeping up a public image as Karina’s boyfriend but he’s totally smitten with Meaghan. He’s been lusting after her ever since they met in L.A. when she was 18 years old.

Meaghan confirms, “I had a steady boyfriend at the time, so I didn’t date Mario, but I kept in touch. He called me recently and we’ve been seeing each other.”

She also tells The ENQUIRER that after their weekend in New Orleans, he asked her to go to New Mexico with him.

“He also wanted me to go to North Carolina, but I couldn’t take off on just two days notice.”

She also says she could be his escort to the upcoming wedding of Eva Longoria, and Tony Parker. She explains, “He’s been friends with Eva for 20 years, and I’m friends with Tony. So if he asks me to go to the wedding, I would.”

Meaghan doesn’t harbor any illusions about walking the aisle with Mario someday. “I would never get serious with him because he has a history of not being real faithful.”
