Olympic hero Michael Phelps has split with his longtime girlfriend Nicole Johnson, a former Miss California.

The champion swimmer and the brunette had been dating on and off for several years, and she traveled with him in July to the FINA World Championships in Shanghai. Sources say the couple broke up a few weeks ago, and Phelps is telling friends he’s single. Baltimore-born Phelps spent New Year’s Eve partying with six guy friends and six girls at Chelsea hot spot Avenue. Meanwhile Johnson, according to her Twitter feed, spent the night in LA with friends.

A rep for Phelps, in training for the 2012 Olympics, didn’t respond.

Who knew Michael Phelps could clean up so nice?

Luxe watchmaker Omega had the Olympic swimmer don an eye loupe (that’s the doohickey on his forehead for magnifying tiny parts) and attempt to deconstruct one of their timepieces on Wednesday night — with some guidance from the watchmakers, of course.

Phelps joked, “If I’m able to successfully put this watch back together, I get to keep it, right?”

At least the Olympian has found one company that isn’t afraid to take him on as the face of its brand following his pot-smoking scandal. Perhaps it’s because he can easily channel a sweet side. After his in-depth timepiece inspection, he shopped for a Mother’s Day gift for his mom, Debbie.
Also on hand was “Gossip Girl” star Michelle Trachtenberg, who arrived wearing the same color scheme as Phelps. When someone commented on the coordinated clothing, the actress joked that she and the swimmer had planned their outfits on Twitter — but then burst into fits of giggles, because (gasp!) neither tweets!

“I don’t even know what ‘tweeting’ means … but it sounds dirty!” Trachtenberg joked.

That may be a good thing — we can do without knowing important tidbits like what Trachtenberg has for lunch every day.

But as for following Phelps, well, that just might be interesting: “Dudez. Made my medalz in2 a pimp chalice. If u want 2 see it, txt me. MP.”

Michael Phelps is denying rumors that he is romancing controversial Miss California contestant Carrie Prejean.

“I’m not dating anybody,” he told Usmagazine.com Wednesday at the opening of the Omega flagship boutique in NYC. “I’m single. My private life stays private.”

(Prejean, 21, was coy earlier this week when asked about rumors they’re an item. “He is a great man. Wouldn’t you like to know?” she said on The Billy Bush Show Monday.)

As for Prejean’s anti-gay marriage answer during the Miss USA competition, Phelps tells Us, “That’s the cool thing about America – everybody has their opinion.”

“I’m not saying I support her,” Phelps then added. “I’m not saying I don’t support her.”

Jay-Z doesn’t smoke pot, but the rap titan still defends Olympian Michael Phelps’ actions. “You look at all these people who graduated from Princeton and Harvard, who are supposed to be pillars of the community — every day [they’re] in the newspaper arrested for some kind of financial fraud,” the Grammy winner told Cigar Aficionado magazine for his first-ever cover appearance. “Then you look at someone like Michael Phelps. He’s 23. What’s he gonna do? He’s a kid. He’s going to experiment.”

Jay, who started out slinging crack in the projects, went on to say, “They say there’s no honor among thieves — that’s not really true. When I was on the street . . . if you back on your word [out there], they don’t take you to court. You can cause yourself some real problems. When I first came into the music business, I’d have these conversations with executives and we’d shake hands on something, and the next time I saw them they’d say, ‘I never said that.’ So I’d say there’s no honor among businessmen.”

Tsk, tsk, Michael Phelps. Partying your face off in public is not the way to reclaim your good-guy image.

The Olympian, who has been laying relatively low since his bong-smoking scandal in January, was out in full force Tuesday night at NYC hot spot Marquee.

“Michael was definitely having a good time,” an eyewitness tells us. “He was drinking straight from a bottle of Grey Goose, and when the deejay started playing M.I.A.’s ‘Paper Planes,’ he got up, started dancing like a loon and kept on yelling, ‘Shots!’”

Phelps definitely had enough alcohol on hand for several rounds — he’d ordered four bottles of vodka.

In addition, the athlete skeeved out onlookers when he persisted in PDA-ing with his girlfriend, cocktail waitress Caroline (Caz) Pal.

“They wouldn’t stop making out! They were literally sucking face, and not caring that anyone was watching,” says our snitch, who added that Phelps danced up such a storm that he briefly went shirtless, changing out of his T-shirt in the club and putting on a zip-up hoodie with nothing underneath.

But the night wasn’t all fun and games for Phelps. During the course of the evening, the champ recognized UConn basketball player Hasheem Thabeet and went over to introduce himself.

“Hasheem had absolutely no clue who Michael was, and [Phelps] walked away looking a little embarrassed,” says the onlooker.

The night ended for the champ around 2:30 a.m., when he was spotted getting into a cab and heading to a friend’s pad to “chill.” Hopefully, he didn’t engage in any “behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” as per the swimmer’s recent public apology for his past indiscretions.

A rep for Phelps didn’t return a call for comment by our deadline.

While Michael was perfecting his partying skills, his mom was having a far more sedate time over at the Grand Hyatt.

“Michael is in New York to be with his mama, of course,” Debbie Phelps told us at the “Dressed for Success” event. “He’s actually back in training right now.”

For what, Debbie? Is there an Olympic medal for clubbing?

Phelps: ‘It was a bad mistake’
March 13: In an interview with TODAY’s Matt Lauer, Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps apologizes after pictures emerged on the Internet that showed him with a bong.

Michael Phelps (above) emerged from bong-gate without any criminal charges, but he’s still wary of having his photo taken. A spy tells us the human dolphin recently had the windows of his Baltimore house tinted to prevent paparazzi from snapping shots of him at home. According to our source, Phelps has also been “hiding out at strip clubs,” since they’re the only places he can party with no pictures being taken. Phelps’ agent didn’t return calls or e-mails seeking comment.

“Everybody wants him on to explain why he was smoking marijuana,” said a source. “Oprah Winfrey, ABC, CBS, NBC – everyone wants him.” While there were rumors that Phelps was asking $1 million for the interview – perhaps to compensate for the cash he lost when Kellogg’s dropped him as a spokesman after the scandal – the source said, “No money is being talked about.” But we wonder why Phelps wouldn’t give the interview to NBC, which carried the Olympics, promoted him and made him a star.
