Mischa Barton was so high on coke following a marathon three-day bender that friends called cops afraid she would kill herself, sources have told The Post.

Barton, 23, was taken away from her LA home by police and placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold on Wednesday.

The party-loving former “O.C” star was due to fly to New York for the premiere of her movie “Homecoming,” which has been slammed by critics.

A source close to Barton said, “She’s in very bad shape.

“She’s running out of money and can’t find love, so now she is looking for a good time to escape her misery. She is on a downward spiral.

“She is a mess. She is a suicidal, uninsurable mess.”

Photographed Tuesday at an LA hotel, the once-skinny Barton (above) looked bloated and almost unrecognizable.

A guest at the hotel said Barton seemed to be stumbling around poolside and at one point was topless.

Two weeks ago she hit the headlines after being kicked out of the ladies’ room at an exclusive London nightclub for trying to bring a gal pal into one of the stalls.

Barton told Life and Style magazine only days ago that she was “happy and healthy.”

She said: “It does get cumbersome to have to address the same non-issues on a repeated basis. Fortunately, I’m healthy and comfortable in my own skin.

“I’m happy. I wouldn’t change my body, and I couldn’t anyway. The only way to be happy and be a more enjoyable person is to embrace what you’ve got.”

Her publicist, Craig Schneider, released a statement yesterday confirming that the actress remains in the hospital under doctor’s orders. Under Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code, authorities can hold a person for up to 72 hours if they present a danger to themselves or others. It is the same law used to hospitalize Britney Spears last year.

A source believes it will take some time before Barton bounces back, saying: “She is a tortured and troubled person. You can survive a bad review, but when you don’t show up for the premiere of your new film, it’s not a good sign of where your career is heading.”

Mischa Barton was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold (also known as a 5150) by the Los Angeles Police Department and transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday evening, a source close to the situation claimed to Access Hollywood.

On Wednesday, Access broke the news that authorities had responded to the Los Angeles home of the starlet after receiving a non-911 call from her residence around 3 PM. A patrol car responded to the scene and began assisting Barton with a “medical issue,” a spokesperson for the LAPD confirmed to Access on Wednesday evening.

The source claimed that Barton was placed under Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code by police and transported to Cedars-Sinai.

According to the code, authorities can hold a person involuntarily if they present a danger to themselves or others, are gravely disabled or suffer from a mental disorder. This same code was used to hold Britney Spears twice in Los Angeles in January 2008.

When asked about information related to the alleged involuntary hold, an LAPD spokesperson would not comment directly. However, the spokesperson did admit that if any person was held under a 5150, authorities would be prohibited from disclosing the information due to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) laws.

According to the California Welfare and Institutions Code, the hospital can hold Barton involuntarily for up to 72 hours.

A rep for the actress confirmed to Access that Barton will not attend the world premiere of her new film, “Homecoming,” which happens Thursday night in New York City, but released no further details on the star.

Additionally, the director of Barton’s film said in a statement that those involved with the movie were “saddened” Barton will not be at the event.

“I along with everyone on the ‘Homecoming’ team are saddened to hear that Mischa Barton will not be able to attend the film’s premiere tonight in New York,” director Morgan J. Freeman said in a statement to Access on Thursday. “Her performance in ‘Homecoming’ is fantastic, and she will be missed at our premiere.

“We hope she is OK,” Freeman added, “and that her condition is not serious.”

Sources close to the film told Access Barton was due to fly into New York City on Wednesday evening. She had a photo shoot scheduled and was going to head out to the premiere around 3 PM on Thursday.

Barton is the star of “Homecoming,” playing Shelby, the ex-girlfriend of a football player in a small town, who does whatever it takes to get her beau back. The film co-stars Jessica Stroup of “90210” and Matt Long of ABC’s “The Deep End.”

It seems Mischa Barton can’t win. After being criticised for her cellulite she dropped three dress sizes, only to be lambasted for setting a bad example.

But now the actress has stripped off for a Cosmopolitan magazine shoot to celebrate body confidence – and says she wouldn’t change her figure, even if she could.

‘It’s human nature to be self-critical, but it’s possible to like the way you look,’ she said. ‘I’m happy now – I wouldn’t change my body, and I couldn’t anyway.

‘The only way to be happy and be a more enjoyable person to be around is to embrace what you’ve got. Everyone has issues about their body, but I feel confident now. I’m healthy and happy.’

Mischa made her name as the willowy blonde clothes horse in American teen drama The OC, but piled on the weight after leaving.

‘Surely there are more important issues than if someone has cellulite?’ she said, making a reference to the much debated photos of her legs, taken last year as she enjoyed a holiday.

‘And I don’t understand the point of people looking for bad things. Why bother? I know it’s human nature to want to pick on other people, but I find it a little shallow.’

The 23-year-old, who is 5ft 9, slumped from a healthy size 12 to a size 6-8 in just six months, showing off a dramatically slimmer silhouette while attending the shows at Paris Fashion Week in February.

It has been reported that she followed a draconian slimming programme.

However Mischa says her new confidence in herself is thanks to being single.

‘I’m working on [getting confident] but I’ve grown so much in the past six months. I’ve grown immensely… It’s because I’ve been single.

‘After I broke up with a boyfriend last year [prior to Luke Pritchard from the Kooks], I felt empowered. I’ve forced myself to grow up – I really felt like it was time.

‘And nothing makes you grow like finding out that somebody or something isn’t good for you.’

Mischa says other women are the worse offenders.

‘I don’t think most men would even notice if you put on some weight … Beauty is about more than looks.’

And she says that just because they are famous celebrities don’t have the wonderful lives that onlookers might imagine.

‘I think people see celebs as having these perfect lives,’ she said. ‘But that’s not true.

‘Instead, what counts is that the people in your life – your family and friends – think you’re a nice person.’
