Naomi Watts will play Britain’s Princess Diana in a new feature film about the last two years of her glamorous life that ended in tragedy, Britain’s Ecosse Films said on Thursday.

Called “Caught in Flight”, the movie is thought to be the first big screen film about Diana, whose death in a Paris car crash in 1997 has been chronicled in several, mostly U.S., television movies.

Watts, last seen in “J.Edgar” and political movie “Fair Game”, who was born in Britain and raised in Australia, said she was honored to be chosen. American newcomer Jessica Chastain (“The Help”), was previously attached to the project.

“It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role. Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen,” Watts, 43, said in a statement.

Ecosse Films said the movie would chronicle the last two years of Diana’s life and “how finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed her to achieve her defining successes evolving into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.”

Media reports have said the movie will focus on Diana’s secret two year affair with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan following her estrangement, and later divorce, from British heir to the throne, Prince Charles.

“Caught in Flight” will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, who directed the 2004 movie “Downfall” about Hitler’s last days. Production will start in Britain later this year.

At least one other feature movie about Diana is in the works. Preliminary titled “Diana”, that film has been in development for some months and is based on accounts of Diana’s life as a member of the royal family by her longtime bodyguard Ken Wharfe. No casting has been announced.

Diana, formally known as the Princess of Wales, was just 36 years-old when she died in August 1997, causing an outpouring of worldwide grief.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, who is currently filming “Salt” with Angelina Jolie, took a few days break from filming to have a family trip and visit Israel for the first time. They are with their sons Sacha and Kai.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber welcomed their second child, a boy, on Saturday, the actress’ rep tells Usmagazine.com.

“I can confirm that she had a baby boy yesterday,” the rep tells Us. The name has not yet been released.

Watts, 40, and Schreiber, 41, are also parents to Alexander, who was born in July 2007.

Motherhood “is everything everyone says it is and more,” the actress told Australia’s Herald Sun in April.

“There’s still so much to learn, I’m still figuring it out,” she added. “It’s amazing how you can lose yourself in hours of doing absolutely nothing but staring, making funny faces and noises. I’m having a great time.”

Naomi Watts’ family is about to get another addition!

The actress, 39, has entered her second trimester with her second baby, Us Weekly reports in its newest issue, on newsstands now.

But don’t expect a huge announcement: When she was pregnant last year with her first child, her beau, Liev Schreiber, 40, didn’t confirm it until he casually told Conan O’Brien, “Yes, I’m going to be a dad.”

The couple — who met on the set of the 2006 drama The Painted Veil and have homes in NYC and L.A. — welcomed son Alexander in July 2007.

Of course, should Watts feel like talking about the pregnancy, she’ll have a sympathetic ear.

Her best friend, fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman, 41, is expecting early this summer.

Watts’ rep tells Us she doesn’t comment on her client’s personal life.

Naomi Watts was sporting some new bling at the airport last Monday, sparking rumors that she had wed her boyfriend of three years, Liev Schreiber.

According to report in the Sydney Morning Herald, “Photographs of Watts, wearing a large diamond ring and another band with smaller diamonds on her ring finger, taken at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday, fueled rumors that she had secretly tied the knot while in Australia.”

The couple have a son, Alexander Pete, 7 months.

In June 2007, Liev, 40, joked to Entertainment Tonight, “We are married. You got it first. Break the story!” but her rep later denied it.

As far as this new round of rumors that Naomi, 39, and Liev tied the knot, Naomi’s rep told PageSix.com: “I don’t comment on her personal life,” but the bling speaks for itself.

Naomi Watts bravely stepped out last night for her first public appearance since the death of her ex, Heath Ledger, but she soon became overcome with emotion, her eyes welling with tears, during a video tribute.

The actress was on hand at the Tropfest Film Festival in Sydney, Australia, to judge and present awards at the annual event. But she broke down when a video tribute, a complilation of clips from Heath’s films, including Brokeback Mountain and Candy was aired, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The montage also included footage of Heath presenting an award at a previous year’s Tropfest.

“The Australian film industry lost someone very special a few weeks ago. He was gentle and had a humble spirit. We send our deepest regrets to his family. He’s an incredible loss,” said director John Polson, who had put together the tribute.

A mourning Naomi Watts has pulled out of all engagements at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The actress, in Park City to promote her new thriller Funny Games, has canceled all interviews and obligations after learning her former lover Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in his Manhattan home.

The pair began dating after sparks flew on the set of their 2002 Western Ned Kelly and lasted 16 months.

In April of 2004 Heath’s sister, a publicist, announced their split saying, “At this time in their lives both are busy pursuing careers which are taking them in different directions. They remain close friends.”An official statement has yet to be released from Naomi’s’ camp regarding Heath’s passing.

Games, a pot-boiler about a pair of young serial killers terrorizing a family on holiday, costars Michael Pitt, who once played love interest to the mother of Ledger’s only child, Michelle Williams, on her hit series Dawson’s Creek.

NAOMI Watts has scored a major role opposite Tom Hanks in “Angels and Demons,” the prequel to the “The Da Vinci Code,” which will also be directed by Ron Howard – but the production’s start has been moved back due to the writers’ strike. “It’s been put off at least until February,” said one insider. But the picture will get made, and the release date of spring 2009 hasn’t been changed. Watts’ rep did not return calls or e-mails for comment.
