Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo have split!

A source close to the couple tells ys: “It was an amicable break-up. They walk away from it still friends.”

Adds another source, “They still care about each other very much. This is what’s best for both of them.”

The couple hooked up in 2006 — the year after Lachey split from wife Jessica Simpson.

In 2007, Minnillo told Us she wanted to have kids with Lachey: “I always say I want three boys and a girl, but at the end of the day, I just want healthy kids.”

Tongues were wagging over Vanessa Minnillo’s recent display of affection with a guy who was not longtime beau Nick Lachey. The celebutrash was spotted at the SLS hotel in LA, “hanging out in a private cabana all night” with “90210″ actor Matt Lanter. Our spy said, “Vanessa definitely wasn’t with Nick. She sat on Matt’s lap and really close to him for two hours at the party. He looks like a younger version of Nick.” A rep for Minnillo said her client knows her “Disaster Movie” co-star because “they made a film together.”

There’s trouble in paradise for Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo.

A source close to the ex-boybander says the two “are on the rocks big time. They argue all the time, and Nick is done with her. He feels like she’s holding him back, careerwise.”

Sure enough, Lachey’s career isn’t as hot as it used to be. His latest single, “Patience,” hasn’t even cracked the pop charts, though a friend close to the singer is quick to note “it’s doing well on the adult contemporary.” (When we checked, it was No. 39 on Billboard’s Hot Adult Top 40 list after five weeks of airplay, and it topped out on the Pop 100 Airplay list at No. 75 back in March.)

He’s also producing a show on MTV called “Taking the Stage,” but even that hasn’t taken off, perhaps because Lachey has stayed behind the camera for much of the season. A source close to Lachey argued that the show, based around students from the Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Arts, has become “a cult hit.”

But what the singer really needs is a mainstream breakthrough — and Lachey’s pals say that in order to launch a comeback, he needs to dump Minnillo. It was recently reported the end was near after Minnillo stormed out of an L.A. restaurant with an angry face — with Lachey chasing after her in embarrassment, doggy bag in hand. A source close to the couple told us, “After the pictures came out, Nick told friends they weren’t fighting about their relationship, that it was just Vanessa going through a tough time personally.”

But, says another source, “We’re just not sure if we believe that anymore. The relationship has been over for a while, but he’s too nice a guy to end things completely.”

That may explain why the singer keeps making an effort. In town for a recent Lachey promotional tour, he and Minnillo — who’ve been together since March 2006 — dined at The Charles restaurant. “They sat in a corner table, exchanging kisses,” said one spy. “But something still wasn’t quite right.”

Said Minnillo’s rep: “They’re fine — none of this is true.”

Lachey’s rep echoed the sentiments: “To my knowledge, everything is great with them.”

One-Hour Reality Musical Series Conceptualized and Executive Produced by Nick Lachey Will Follow Students of Cincinnati’s School For Creative And Performing Arts

Premieres Thursday, March 19 at 10p.m. EST/PST

What would you do in order to fulfill your dreams? For the young stars of MTV’s new reality musical series Taking The Stage, the answer is anything. Premiering Thursday, March 19 at 10p.m. ET/PT on MTV, Taking The Stage is a one-hour 10-episode reality musical series conceptualized and executive produced by Nick Lachey (98 Degrees), that will follow the lives of five talented students at the School For Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) in Cincinnati, Ohio. A reality musical series executive produced by feature film and theatre producer Marc Platt who also serves as creative consultant (Honey, Legally Blonde, Nine, Broadway Musical Wicked), the show is the first of its kind to be scored with music performed by cast members in-scene. Each episode of Taking The Stage will feature songs and dance routines written and choreographed by the cast.

In the heart of Cincinnati, SCPA is a prestigious school that draws young people from all backgrounds dedicated to pursuing careers in the arts. The school has an illustrious history of producing some of the entertainment industry’s most renowned dancers, singers and musicians from Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) and actress Carmen Electra (Starsky & Hutch), to actor/director Todd Luiso (High Fidelity), actor Rocky Carroll (NCIS) and singer Nick Lachey. SCPA is not the average high school and gaining entrance is not an easy task, as every student must audition before being accepted. The curriculum is so rigorous, that the students who have been there the longest call themselves “survivors.” Honing their skills will take everything they have but to achieve it they will have to focus all their energy and make sacrifices along the way.

While they are some of the most talented teenagers in the country, they will still have to navigate the same trials and insecurities that all teenagers face which are obstacles that threaten their chances at success. The enormous pressure to make good grades, demanding rehearsal schedules, changing friendships and first loves, will keep them striving to find balance. As these rising stars pursue their goals, cameras will be there to capture the ups and downs, the adulations and tears, and that moment when they risk it all to take the stage and claim it as their own.

“Taking The Stage is an entirely new genre of television for us… the reality musical drama,” said Tony DiSanto, Head of MTV Programming. “It has heart, emotion, real stakes, and music organically woven in to the stories as the method of expression for this amazing group of kids. Their stories are captivating as they work hard to realize their dreams while going through all the trials of their senior year of high school. The talent of this cast is inspiring and we are thrilled to partner with Nick Lachey on a series we are incredibly proud of.”

“I spent my formative years at SCPA, so I know first hand what a fantastic yet often intense environment it can be,” said Nick Lachey, Co-creator and Executive Producer on Taking The Stage. “This show is a great journey for me both personally and professionally. It’s provided me with an opportunity to step behind the camera and get into development and producing as well as put a spotlight on the great city of Cincinnati and my alma mater.”

The cast of Taking The Stage :

Jasmine – A prima ballerina who dreams of attending New York performing arts conservatory The Juilliard School after graduating from SCPA.

Mia – A singer-songwriter whose talent is matched only by her drive and her goal is to be signed by the time she is 18.

Tyler – A gifted hip-hop dancer, he is new to SCPA where he joins his little brother Chris (also a dancer and already a student) and attracts attention from everyone at the school.

Malik – Jasmine’s best friend and leads the school’s only hip-hop dance group, “The Definition.” In addition to his formidable dance skills, he is also a talented choreographer and a singer/songwriter.

Shaakira – A dancer and aspiring actress, she is also an accomplished ballet dancer — one of the best SCPA has ever produced — but prefers hip-hop dance and is an integral member of Malik’s team.

In the premiere episode, SCPA students are buzzing about an upcoming school talent showcase where the students will get to perform in front of judges made-up of music industry professionals including an executive from Jive Records. Tyler is new to the school and while Malik’s and Shaakira’s dance crew is the reigning hip-hop troupe in the school, he’s more than ready to give them some long-overdue competition. Jasmine finds herself torn between her growing attraction to Tyler and her loyalty to Malik. Mia is working on an original song she wants to perform but wonders if her boyfriend will be there for her on the biggest night of her life. In order to perform well and get what could be their first big break, these students will have to fight through the personal drama in order to focus and impress the judges on show night.

From March 12 – March 19, viewers can visit TakingTheStage.MTV.com to watch an extended scene from the premiere episode. While there, they also become familiar with the cast through video profiles and photos. After the March 19 premiere, fans can catch-up on the show through the site’s full episode player and to stream original music and performance clips from the cast.

Taking The Stage is conceptualized and executive produced by multiplatinum recording artist and actor Nick Lachey (former member of 98 Degrees, Charmed, NBC’s Clash of the Choirs), an SCPA graduate. Colton Gramm, Mark Ford, Marc Platt and Kevin Lopez also serve as executive producers for the series. Liz Gateley executive produces the series for MTV and Heather Olander serves as the Executive In Charge of the series for the network.

It looks as though genetically-blessed duo Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo are going stronger than ever, but is Miss Minnillo ready to take the next step? The Tinseltown twosome snuck into Christina Aguilera’s Target Terrace AMAs party at and stood by each other’s side throughout the evening. According to an inside source, Ness did some hinting while hitting the dancefloor during Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.”

“Vanessa was dancing and joking about putting a ring on her finger,” said the eyewitness. “She was pointing to her ring finger! The two were very happy and sipping champagne together.” Awww.

Other guests included rekindled romancers Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman as well as Xtina herself, Sarah McLachlan, David Archuleta, Tyrese Gibson and JC

Luckily for Vanessa Minnillo, life doesn’t always imitate art.

Case in point? In Disaster Movie, hitting theaters Friday, Minnillo’s cheerleader character just can’t get her boyfriend to say “I love you.”

“He just can’t drop the L-word,” Minnillo, 27, tells PEOPLE of her character’s commitment-challenged boyfriend. “And what a girl wants more than anything in the world is for their boyfriend to say ‘I love you.’ ”

But, says Minnillo, her real-life beau Nick Lachey, 34, doesn’t have any similar hang-ups: “The L-word is not thrown around by men as easily as it is by women – but I didn’t say it first! He’s very loving. We’re very open and vocal.”

While Minnillo and Lachey may be in sync when it comes to their love for each other, their attempt to exercise together is not so harmonious.

“We used to work out together, but we stopped,” says Minnillo, laughing. “We’re doing different things. And the guy runs forever! Like, I swear, he’s running 11 miles a day. I can’t run. That’s the one thing I can’t do, because I feel like the further I jog away from my house, the further I have to jog back!”

Nick Lachey is returning to his roots.

The former Newlyweds star is executive producing a pilot for an MTV reality show, which the network describes as a version of the ’80s movie and TV show Fame, according to The Hollwood Reporter.

The yet-to-be-named program focuses on students at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Lachey’s alma mater. (Sarah Jessica Parker and Carmen Electra are also famous former students.)

“The stories and relationships are all set to music that’s organic to what’s going on in the school and also performed by the kids,” Tony DiSanto, executive VP of series development and programming at the network, tells the Reporter. “This is a genre-busting, creative experiment that I’m really excited about.”

As an example DiSanto said a scene could feature kids breaking into dance in the cafeteria, which sounds a lot like a real-life High School Musical, or the soundtrack could come from a scene in which a student is practicing his or her instrument.

Lachey, who proposed the project, is executive producing it with Marc Platt and Russell Heldt.
