Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon are to star in a new comedy from Cameron Crowe, it has been confirmed.

Though no plot details for the as-yet-untitled film have been released, Variety reports that Stiller and Witherspoon have signed up to act in the Almost Famous director’s first film in three years.

As with his work on Vanilla Sky and Elizabethtown, Crowe is to write, produce and direct the film, which is expected to begin shooting in January.

With Columbia Pictures having outbid a reported four other studios for rights to the film, the deal returns Crowe to the production house for the first time since 2000′s Oscar-winning Almost Famous.

He also produced his biggest box office hit, 1996′s Jerry Maguire, with Columbia and worked with studio chief Amy Pascal almost 20 years ago on Say Anything.

Stiller, who will next hit UK screens alongside Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr in period comedy Tropic Thunder, is currently filming Night at the Museum 2: Escape from the Smithsonian – a sequel to his 2006 family hit.

Witherspoon, meanwhile, recently completed production on Four Christmases, during the filming of which she is rumoured to have clashed with co-star Vince Vaughan.

Jake Gyllenhaal will no doubt be celebrating his first “unofficial” Father’s Day when he rings in the holiday this year with girlfriend Reese Witherspoon and her kids Ava,8, and 4-year-old Deacon.

In fact, sources say the couple has grown so close that Jake practically considers Reese’s kids his own — and now friends of the actor say he’s pushing to tie the knot with his Legally Blonde love so that the two can start a family of their own!

“He knows he might be jumping the gun thinking of kids, but he knows that Reese is the one,” a pal of Jake tells OK!. “He laughs and says he needs to propose and do this the right way. It really is first comes love, then comes marriage — cheesy as that sounds, it’s the way he thinks!”

As much as she loves Jake and enjoys him being with her kids, Reese,32, knows how hard it is to be a parent. Although the Brokeback Mountain star is an uncle to his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and her fiancé Peter Sarsgaard’s 20-month-old daughter, Ramona, Reese wants to make sure he’s ready.

Meanwhile, the couple has been increasingly more comfortable taking their relationship public — cuddling outside L.A.’s Katsuya on May 24 and grabbing coffee a day later at Caffe Luxxe in Santa Monica.

“Reese has admitted that Jake has grown from when they first met into this very dependable dad type,” a pal says, adding, “He’s ready to have his whole life change.”

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon continue to be one of Hollywood’s cutest and most low-key couples. The pair, along with Witherspoon’s kids, Ava and Deacon, went on a little spring break of their own in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, according to Us Weekly.

They trip got off to a bumpy start. Gyllenhaal is on crutches and Witherspoon had an allergic reaction to strawberries on the flight to Mexico, but once they arrived at their rented home on the El Dorado Golf and Beach Club, Us reports that gang settled in well.

The magazine’s eyewitness said that “the kids loved the pool. It was hard to tear them away from the water.” And although the group had a private chef, “Reese and Jake both did a lot of cooking.”

There doesn’t appear to be much awkwardness when Gyllenhaal is with the kids, either. “The kids have fun with him — he makes them laugh,” reports the mag.

That isn’t to say Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal didn’t have alone time — that’s where the nanny came in. At night, “they had a fire pit, and they sat around and talked after the kids went to bed,” Us reports. “Having the nanny also let them have time together undisturbed.”

Reese Witherspoon doesn’t fear box-office bombs!

On today’s Ellen, host Ellen DeGeneres asked the actress if, while watching Sunday’s Academy Awards presentation, she thought, “Ah, who cares about those — I’ve already got one.”

Reese’s laughing response? “The good news is… no matter how many stinky movies you make, they can’t take it away from you!”

(The actress, 31, whose new flick, Penelope, opens tomorrow, won an Oscar in 2006 for her starring role in Walk the Line.)

Reese also revealed a surprising obsession — trash!

“I like to throw a lot of things away. Particularly at Christmas, it makes me a little crazy when the trash is overflowing. So then I put on rubber boots and I literally get into the trash can and I stomp on the trash and [my son] Deacon thinks it’s so great. We call me ‘the mommy trash compactor.’”

To which Ellen quipped, “Then you should make wine.”

“Sometimes I’ll sneak in and look at the neighbor’s garbage cans and see if it’s kind of empty. I’ll wait literally until the middle of the night when the children are asleep and I’ll take my extra garbage and I’ll put it in the can,” Reese continued.

“And at Christmastime I was talking to my brother and I was like, ‘Brother, sometimes I sneak into the garbage and I put it in the other person’s can.’ And he goes, ‘So do I, Sister.’”
