“Charm School with Ricki Lake” Premieres Monday, May 11 at 9:00PM ET/PT

Former television talk show host, documentary film producer and author Ricki Lake is coming back to the small screen with some of the outrageous women from VH1’s “Rock of Love Bus with Bret Michaels” and “Real Chance of Love.” This season, Ricki faces the challenging task of transforming these ladies into selfless angels through various acts of charity. Known for their amusingly bad behavior, the new unruly class of “Charm School” must learn how to become more independent and respectable in just eight weeks. This season with Ricki’s guidance the ladies will have to take on real responsibilities with non-profit organizations and contribute their time to a different charity each week.

Ricki Lake has trimmed 140 lbs. from her all-time top weight of 270 pounds – and says she is holding steady.

“I can’t believe I was a fat person for most of my life,” the former talk show host, rocking a sexy black Herve Leger dress (size small), told PEOPLE at a recent benefit for the New Space for Women’s Health, a New York City birthing center slated to open in 2010.

“I didn’t have surgery and I worked hard. There’s no secret. I’m active. I watch what I eat,” Lake, 40, adds.

But she’s certainly not immune to the pressure to stay thin. “According to Hollywood standards, I’m not a thin girl. I’m a normal girl,” says the mom of two boys, Milo, 11, and Owen, 6. “I don’t want to perpetuate that obsession but yet I am also guilty of wanting … to lose weight.”

“I’m just grateful that I have sons and not daughters because it’s that much harder,” she says.

Lake sticks to meals delivered by a service called Fresh Dining (“It’s organic, it’s fresh, and I still love it,” she says) but admits unpredictable factors in life could one day interfere.

“With the weight stuff I don’t have any answers,” she says. “Something tragic in my life could happen and I could balloon and gain weight. I can’t promise I will be like this forever.”

Recently, Lake has been focusing on making a sequel to her 2007 documentary The Business of Being Born, and is working on a guide to pregnancy, due out in May.

And with the holidays in full swing? “I will be really conscious because I have this book coming out and I want to look great,” she says. “I don’t need to lose anymore weight. [But] I don’t want to go backwards. So I’m not going to pig out this Christmas.”

IT’S Ricki Lake as fans have never seen her before: buck naked in her bathtub and giving birth to her second son. The explicit footage, made in 2001, is part of the new documentary “The Business of Being Born,” screening at the IFC Center in the West Village. Post film editor V.A. Musetto says it shows Lake enduring the pain of childbirth, then having the baby, Owen, and crying over and over, “Oh, my God. Oh, my God.” Afterward, the actress-TV host calls the experience “empowering.” We’re just grossed out.

Yes, John Mayer recently admitted to having a “crush” on her. But Ricki Lake insists their relationship hasn’t moved beyond casual cocktail party chit-chat.

“I swear to God, there is no story,” she told PEOPLE Wednesday during a photoshoot for the magazine. “I met him at a party. He admitted he had a crush and I admitted, hey, vice versa. That was it. I wish there was actually something to tell. There was nothing.”

Last week, Mayer, 30, and Lake, 39, talked and exchanged phone numbers at a Manhattan party – and the New York Post’s Page Six promptly reported on the possible love connection.

“He was adorable. Nice,” Lake told the PEOPLE reporter. “[But] I’ve been more intimate with you than I was with him.”

Even if there had been sparks, the single mom adds, the tabloid frenzy would have cooled things down. “The media [attention] blew my chances!” she mock-lamented.

That night, the two did both attend events for John C. Reilly’s new film, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, but their paths didn’t seem to cross.

Lake attended the premiere, where she again shot down rumors of a romance, calling it “completely overblown.” Mayer, meanwhile, hit the afterparty at Social Hollywood, where he sat with a small group of friends and noshed on appetizers.

Mayer split with Jessica Simpson earlier this year and has been dating Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly since September.

Singer John Mayer and Ricki Lake have prompted rumors of a romance, after the crooner confessed he has a crush on the talk show host. Mayer, 30 met a newly svelte Lake at a PR company’s Christmas party on Tuesday.

According to the New York Post, he told her, “I’ve had a crush on you for two years.”

The pair then exchanged numbers, went their separate ways but texted each other into the night.

Single Mayer has been linked to Jessica Simpson and Cameron Diaz. Lake divorced husband of 11 years Rob Sussman.
