Chris Brown is under court orders not to go within 50 yards of Rihanna, but both he and his ex want to get rid of the strict no-contact clause.

“They think it’s unnecessary and ridiculous,” says a mutual pal of the protection order handed down at Tuesday’s criminal proceeding, during which Brown pled guilty to one count of felony assault in the February attack that left Rihanna battered and bruised. “After [the proceeding], Ri and Chris talked on the phone for almost an hour and really worked at becoming friends. They’re solid now.”

Solid, but still unable to speak to one another in public. At the very least, they’ll be able to get a little closer to one another at this Sunday’s BET Awards in L.A., which both stars are set to attend. The order of protection gives Brown a little leeway at music-industry events, stipulating that he cannot come within 10 yards of the Bajan beauty.

But as much as Rihanna and Chris may want to bury the hatchet, their friend is quick to dismiss a renewed romance. “That’s 100% done,” says the pal. “They aren’t looking to hook back up again. They’re both moving on and going their separate ways.”
Brown is currently in the studio. The “No Air” crooner is working on his comeback album, which will reportedly feature duets with Mary J. Blige and Keri Hilson. We hear the disk will also include a song called “Not My Fault,” about a female “singer” who got “caught up.” We wonder who that could be.

Rihanna is also back to work on new music, but seems to be finding more time for play than her ex. While Brown focuses on his career and repairing his image, Rihanna has recently attended a handful of premieres like “Year One,” enjoyed play dates with pals Aubrey (Drake) Graham, LeBron James and Kanye West, and gone clubbing at Jay-Z’s 40/40.

In addition, CoverGirl seems to have made peace with Rihanna and is releasing a three-month-old ad campaign featuring the singer as its spokeswoman. Being back in the spotlight and more famous than ever? Now that’s beautiful.

Singer Chris Brown might have avoided jail time in his vicious attack on Rihanna, but domestic violence experts aren’t letting him off the hook so easily.

Advocates fear Brown’s plea deal, which gave him five years’ probation and community labor, is so cushy that it sends the wrong message to young men and victims.

“It sets a very poor example,” Roslyn Muraskin, director of the Long Island Women’s Institute, said Tuesday.
“This is a person who attacks a woman for no reason whatsoever and now gets away with the attack.”

Brown, 20, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of felony assault in the February attack on Rihanna after the couple left a Grammy party and fought over a text message.

After seeing pictures of Rihanna’s bruised and battered face, many initially figured Brown wouldn’t be able to avoid jail.
And now that he’s been spared from prison, experts fear other boys will expect leniency for abuse.

“Even Paris Hilton got more jail time!” National Organization for Women President Kim Gandy said in a statement.

“Young girls and boys watching this unfold on TV will see than men who commit violence against women practically go scot-free.”

Rita Smith, executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said Brown’s sentence is typical for first offenders – a problem since it might not be harsh enough to stop future attacks.

“I don’t think it’s enough of a consequence,” she said. “If we give them a break, we give them a shorter sentence or less consequence, it basically just says this wasn’t such a big deal.”

Advocates are particularly troubled about the impact of the sentence on the many middle and high school students who look up to Brown and Rihanna.

But Patti Occhiuzzo Giggans, executive director of Peace Over Violence, thinks Brown should get some credit for owning up to the crime.

“I think there was something refreshing about seeing a celebrity admit guilt. We don’t see that often,” she said.

Rihanna is expected to break four months of silence on Monday and sing on the witness stand about her alleged beating by boyfriend Chris Brown.

The “Umbrella” hitmaker could face a deluge of questions about the choking, biting and “barrage of punches” she received, according to a police affidavit, during a violent pre-Grammy night lovers’ quarrel last February.

Rihanna, 21, was subpoenaed by prosecutors who must demonstrate they have sufficient evidence to try Brown on felony charges of assault and making criminal threats.

R&B star Brown, 20, has pleaded not guilty.

“[The subpoena] is not a guarantee they will call her as a witness, but I fully expect that they will,” Rihanna’s lawyer Donald Etra told the Daily News. “She will testify truthfully.”

Sources said Rihanna initially considered reconciliation with Brown.

But the Barbados-born beauty has reportedly moved on to new romantic and career interests in New York.

“Who knows what she’ll say? But it’s wise for the prosecution to put her on now because if she refuses to testify at trial, they can use her preliminary hearing testimony,” said Loyola Law School Prof. Stanley Goldman, a former public defender in Los Angeles County.

Brown’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, took his attempt to postpone today’s hearing all the way to the California Supreme Court.
He argued that a Superior Court judge erred in denying his request to review internal police records related to the police photo of Rihanna’s bruised and bloody face that was leaked to gossip site TMZ.com.

“This highly prejudicial photograph was sold by an LAPD officer to [TMZ],” Geragos argued in a court filing. “The purpose of the leak was certainly to vilify the defendant and deprive him of a fair trial.”

Geragos said the files might offer ammunition he could use to attack the credibility of any police officers called to the stand.
The state Supreme Court declined to intervene in the case.

Singer Rihanna’s expected testimony at singer Chris Brown’s preliminary hearing on assault charges will not be televised, a court spokesman said.

Prosecutors are expected to call Rihanna, 22, as a witness Monday afternoon as they make their case that Brown attacked her, said Los Angeles Superior Court spokesman Alan Parachini.

Brown, 20, faces two felony counts of assault and making criminal threats stemming from an early morning incident on a Hollywood street in February.

If he reaches a plea agreement, Monday’s hearing would be unnecessary. His lawyer, Mark Geragos, previously indicated he hoped to resolve the case without public testimony.

Los Angeles Criminal Court Judge Patricia Schnegg decided against allowing cameras into the courtroom during Rihanna’s testimony, Parachini said Thursday.

Rihanna — whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty — cleared her schedule so she could be in court if prosecutors call her as a witness, her lawyer, Donald Etra, said last month. Prosecutors told him they would call her, Etra said.

“She will definitely comply with the subpoena and any court order,” he said.

Defense efforts to delay the hearing failed when the California Supreme Court decided Wednesday to deny a motion by Geragos to give him more time to look into a leak of police photos showing Rihanna’s bruised and bloodied face.

Schnegg ruled earlier that the leak is not relevant to the case against Brown. The judge said, however, she might change her mind before a trial.

Brown, who issued a public apology for the incident in February, recorded a short video posted on YouTube last month in which he said, “I ain’t a monster.”

He entered “not guilty” pleas in an earlier court appearance.

If Brown is convicted on the two counts, he could be sentenced to anywhere from probation to four years and eight months in prison, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has said.

The alleged attack happened in February during an argument that began when Rihanna, who had been dating Brown, found a text message from another woman on his cell phone, according to a sworn police statement.

It is unclear whether Brown and Rihanna are still in a relationship.

Rihanna is stepping out with her new man. The singer, who dropped Chris Brown after he allegedly beat her up, is now dating hip-hop artist Drake. The couple went to the after-party for the movie “Year One” on the Empire Hotel roof Monday. “She and Drake were attached at the hip,” said our source. After that, the duo went to Greenhouse on Varick Street and sat in the VIP area. “They are definitely together, but really trying to be discreet,” said our tipster. Rihanna’s rep didn’t return e-mails.

Chris Brown may be trying to make nice with Rihanna before the two appear in court, but she isn’t buying it.

When the two attended Game 4 of the NBA finals in Orlando on Thursday, Brown made no secret of wanting to chat to his ex. Although the two sat on opposite sides of the hoop next to the Magic’s rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers’ bench, the “No Air” singer couldn’t resist constantly sneaking glances at his former flame, who was subpoenaed just days ago to testify in court after being allegedly assaulted by Brown back in February.

At halftime, the two decamped to different lounges: Rihanna to the owners’ personal lounge, and Brown to the Blue Lounge along with Tiger Woods, Hulk Hogan and Ahmad Rashad.

Although Rihanna lingered as long as possible in relative hiding before the game resumed, her ex manfully made his way to her seats, and shook hands with all of her friends. “Chris was definitely trying to make the situation less awkward,” said one eyewitness. “He was trying to be very grownup, and wanted Rihanna to see that as well.”

However, Rihanna really couldn’t have cared less. She was at the game for a purpose, and that purpose was another guy.
A source tells us that the “Umbrella” warbler attended the game at the behest of Magic forward Rashard Lewis, whom she’s currently crushing on. Says a pal of the singer, “Rihanna is trying to get to know Rashard. She’s digging on him, and she hopes the feeling is mutual.”

Although reports claim that Rihanna was at the game to see her rumored lover ? Lakers center Andrew Bynum ? our insider denies that’s the case. “Ri and Andrew are just friends, and they have been for a while. It’s Rashard who she wants. She thinks he’s hotter than hot.”

At the end, Rihanna didn’t stick around to talk to any of the guys. She beat a hasty retreat as soon as the game ended.

Rihanna will face her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown in court after she was ordered to testify at his upcoming trial for domestic violence.

The Barbadian singer has been served with a subpoena to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom on June 22 and intends to ‘co-operate fully’.

But last night the 21-year-old put a brave face on as she joined her pop star friend Fergie to help her launch the Black Eyed Peas’ latest album.

Rihanna’s attorney Donald Etra told People magazine she had been served at his office by Los Angeles District Attorney DA investigators.
‘If the preliminary hearing indeed goes forward, she is now legally required to be there, she will be there, and will answer all questions truthfully,’ he said.

In April Brown, 20, pleaded not guilty to threatening and assaulting Rihanna following a bust-up between the pair on February 8, the morning of the Grammy Awards.

If convicted, he faces anywhere from probation to a maximum four years and eight months in state prison.

R & B singer Brown has lain low since the alleged attack, surfacing simply to tell fans he is ‘not a monster’ in a video message posted online.

In contrast Rihanna has thrown herself into her career and returned to the party scene.

She has starred in Kanye West’s video for his new track Paranoid, celebrated reaching an impressive 12million record sales worldwide and signed to star in new flick Personal Protection.

Last night she joined Fergie in New York, where the two showed off their pouts as they smouldered for the cameras.

Rihanna wore a fashionably fringed grey knitted dress, while 34-year-old Fergie went for all-out glamour in a metallic silver cocktail dress with an oversized black corset belt.

The two were at the release party for the Black Eyed Peas new album E-N-D.

They were joined by Fergie’s bandmates will.i.am, Fergie, Taboo and apl.de.ap at The Griffin in New York.

So who wore this Alexander Wang dress best?

It’s every girl’s nightmare. You spend all day getting ready – choosing the perfect dress, picking the shoes to match, perfecting hair and make up for the occasion.

Then, as you waltz into the party feeling a million dollars, you bump straight into a rival- wearing the same dress. Suddenly a million dollars feels like a million lira – especially if said rival looks better in the dress than you do.

So while Paris and Rihanna, both in their own individual way a darling of the social circuit (and the fashion world), weren’t spotted at the same party in the matching dresses, they were both pictured out in the same city wearing the same dress.

Paris Hilton, 28, last night out with current beau Doug Reinhardt chose the strapless Alexander Wang corset dress to watch the Rock of Ages musical on New York’s Broadway after appearing on the David Letterman show.

But she’d been pipped to the fashion post. If she’d been checking the news, she might have seen 19-year-old Rihanna stepping out in Manhatten, New York, two weeks ago, dressing to the nines to visit the apartment of rapper and producer Kanye West, with whom she is rumoured to be romantically linked.

For a mere mortal, a contemporary rocking the same dress as us in a city the size of New York zone wouldn’t be a problem. But for international stars like these girls, all the world’s a stage – and as far as media coverage is concerned, it’s the same stage.

Fortunately for Paris and Rihanna, both are, as Paris would say, hot, and both wore the dress well.

But who wore it best?

Paris went for a statement yoke necklace, round-toed platforms and matching half-moon clutch. Her hair was left loose, but the bouncy, glossy lengthy bob in high-maintenance blonde speaks of plenty of time spent in the hairdresser’s chair.

Rihanna let the dress speak for itself, eschewing jewellery, simply quiffing her hair into an enormous bouffant bun on top of her head, and throwing a low-slung silver bag over her shoulder.

Rihanna and Chris Brown are both moving on – but with opposing films, not significant others.

A source tells us that the sexy songbird, who’s in New York to work on her new album, is also taking acting lessons while in the Big Apple.

“Rihanna will start filming ‘Personal Protection’ later this year,” says our insider. “She’s not ready, actingwise, yet, so she’s meeting with a coach.”

Additional casting for the project will resume when Ri learns the celluloid ropes.

Similarly, Brown is making a leap to the big screen. The embattled R&B star – who will face the music in an L.A. court Thursday for his alleged assault on Rihanna – has an untitled project that’s said to be a “tearjerker,” according to a pal. “Chris plays a homeless character,” says the friend. “It’s a real rags-to-riches story and should be good for his image.”

Brown will film for three weeks over the summer in both L.A. and Memphis.

But before tongues start wagging, our first insider stresses that the exes are not trying to one-up each other with rival roles – acting was a natural progression for both.

As for the love department? Neither Ri nor Chris has become serious with anyone else. “Chris is being a player. There’s no one exclusive,” says Brown’s pal. Rihanna, meanwhile, has been linked with everyone from Def Jam labelmate Kanye West to rapper Aubrey (Drake) Graham, but she isn’t getting hot ‘n’ heavy with anyone, either.

“Kanye is all over Rihanna’s album – not all over Rihanna!” says our insider. In addition to working together, the two are longtime pals; they even took in an evening showing of “Star Trek” at the Union Square multiplex last week.

Graham, the tween “DeGrassi” star turned rapper, is just a friend of Rihanna’s. “She’s feeling him but wants to take things slow. Right now they’re just chilling,” says our Ri source.

Graham himself echoed this sentiment during a recent interview with Hot 97. “I’m being honest, man,” he said. “She’s just a friend, that’s all.”

Says a second pal of the “Umbrella” singer: “RiRi needs the focus to be on her talents right now, not the bumps in her personal life. She doesn’t want anything else to overshadow her career.”
