Kimora Lee Simmons filed for divorce from her estranged husband, Russell Simmons, in Los Angeles County Superior Court Tuesday.

The couple announced that they had split up in March 2006, but said they had already been separated “for some time.”

In court papers, Kimora, 32, cites irreconcilable differences and asks for legal and physical custody of the couple’s two daughters, Ming, 8, and Aoki, 5. She requests that Simmons, 50, get “reasonable child visitation … to be accompanied at all times by the children’s nanny and security personnel.

At the time of their initial separation in 2006, Simmons said in a statement: “Kimora and I will remain committed parents and caring friends with great love and admiration for each other.”

Kimora has been dogged recently by rumors that she is expecting a child with boyfriend Djimon Hounsou. At an appearance in Chicago earlier this month, she told reporters. “I’m in the paper every single week – that I had a fight with my ex-husband, or that I was mad at one of his girlfriends, or that I’m pregnant, or that I demand Fiji water … Lies upon lies upon lies.”

KIMORA Lee Simmons has never been accused of being gracious, but now the famously immodest former model is grating on ex-husband Russell Simmons’ nerves. According to our spies, Kimora “is not being very nice to her ex’s girlfriend, Porschla Coleman.” Kimora refused to allow Coleman to attend her Baby Phat show during Fashion Week “because she doesn’t want Porschla to be photographed with her children.” Russell is said to be particularly peeved, as he “holds no animosity toward Kimora or her boyfriend, Djimon Hounsou.” A rep didn’t return calls.

RUSSELL Simmons stars in a public service announcement debuting on YouTube tomorrow. The spot shows a tiny, blindfolded Jack Russell terrier being offered up to a pit bull for the kill. “There is nothing slick, cool or glamorous about dogfighting,” Simmons states. “It hurts the human spirit as much as it hurts the animals.” BeKind founder Frances Hayward and Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society offered the NFL the spot to air during its games, but the league, still reeling from the conviction of Atlanta Falcon Michael Vick on dog-fighting charges, punted. Vick is to be sentenced on Dec. 10.

BEFORE Russell Simmons spoke at the Ad Club lunch at the Metropolitan Club honoring Bobby Shriver, he asked if it would be all right to use his usual term of endearment with the Kennedy cousin, “my [N-word]!” When told no, Simmons said, “You’re right. There are too many white people in this room.” Shriver, whose Project Red raised $45 million to fight disease in Africa, was also “roasted” by his brother-in-law Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (with Maria Shriver) and others. But Simmons got the biggest laugh recalling how he asked Shriver one morning what he was doing. Shriver replied, “I’m working for the poor people. What the [bleep] are you doing?”

Russell Simmons says he’s just fine with his estranged wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, spending time with Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou.

“He’s a wonderful guy, a very sweet guy,” Simmons, 49, told PEOPLE Monday at the New York City premiere of HBO’s Life Support. “I want her to be happy no matter what.”

Kimora, 31, and Hounsou, 42, have been spotted getting cozy all over Los Angeles recently, having dinner at Mr. Chow, holding hands at Il Sole and kissing at Hollywood hot spot Winston’s.

A rep for Hounsou had no comment. Kimora’s rep, Keesha Johnson, told PEOPLE Tuesday, “I’m not commenting on it at this point.”

Simmons said he’s not sure of the pair’s romantic status. “I don’t know what they’re doing, but he’s a nice guy,” he told PEOPLE. “She’d better be happy. He’s one of the sweetest guys in the world.”

Russell and Kimora Simmons, who wed in 1998 and have two young daughters, revealed in March that they had separated. Kimora heads the Baby Phat offshoot of Simmons’s Phat Farm clothing label.

“We’re best friends and partners,” Simmons said Monday. “We have our businesses together and our children and we do everything for our children, no matter what.”
