Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt should be sure to take notes when they host a wedding special on MTV.

Four couples will ring in the new year by getting married live on MTV’s “Engaged & Underage: The Bridal Bowl.” The four-hour special will air at 1 p.m. EST on Jan. 1 from the network’s Times Square studio in NYC.

Alongside MTV News correspondents Tim Kash and Kim Stoltz, Montag and Pratt will host the event. The couple drew attention recently for eloping to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on Nov. 20. Because they wed outside the U.S., their nuptials were not legal. On the Dec. 22 finale of The Hills, the couple went to the courthouse, but Pratt opted to wait to give Montag the big wedding she’s always wanted.

On the New Year’s Day show, a different couple will walk down the aisle each hour, complete with footage of the couples’ lives and commentary from friends and family. The couples, all between 19 and 22 years old, will be saying their “I do’s” in front of a national audience.

The first hour, Stephanie, 21, and Adam, 22, from Kearney, Nebraska, will exchange vows. The couple — both have full-time jobs and are students — met through a mutual friend in April.

Texans Elizabeth, 21, and Amadeus, 22, have been dating since they were 14 years old and will wed in the second hour.

The third hour unites Alessandra and Jonathan, both of whom are 21 and met on MySpace, from Sarasota, Florida.

Amanda, 19, and Bradford, 20, will get married in the show’s final hour. From Sikesville, Maryland, they want to wed before Brad is deployed with the Navy.

In the final minutes of The Hills season finale, Spencer nixed his plan to legalize his Mexican wedding to Heidi Montag – at least for now.

After eloping in a Mexican ceremony on November 19, Heidi and Spencer both vowed to make their union legal stateside. Pratt told Ryan Seacrest recently they had done just that by marrying again in a Beverly Hills courthouse. Pratt said to Seacrest on his radio show: “We checked the confidentially box, so good luck [finding our marriage license] people!”

The Associated Press questioned the legality because the judge shown in the trailer doesn’t sit on the bench at the Los Angeles Superior Court, and civil wedding ceremonies are usually performed in chambers instead of courtrooms. At the time, a MTV spokesperson told Usmagazine.com in a statement: “MTV crews captured Heidi and Spencer at the Beverly Hills Courthouse with the Deputy Commissioner who handles all civil unions. We filmed after hours at the request of the courthouse so our cameras would not inconvenience other couples getting married that day.”

But in the end, it was their families that convinced Spencer not to follow through with the quickie courthouse ceremony. During the finale, Heidi’s mom, Darlene, told Spencer, “I know you manipulated and plotted this whole wedding. It’s too fast, too much. You know she had dreams of a bigger wedding. I can’t let you go to the courthouse and make this wedding legal.” Last month, Darlene Egelhoff told Us Weekly that she didn’t trust Spencer. “He’s manipulative and seems to have power over Heidi. I would like to see a blood test from Mexico. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had her drugged.” Pratt responded on Seacrest’s radio show, “I am sure she is just hurt and reacting crazy because she wasn’t there.”

Spencer’s sister, Stephanie also had a strong opinion about the civil ceremony, telling him, “”You can’t do this. She’s going to regret this. I think this is wrong.”

Finally, in front of Deputy Commissioner, Donna Jones, Heidi proclaims, “I, Heidi, take thee Spencer to be my lawfully wedded husband for better or for worse for as long as we both shall live.” After a tense few seconds, Spencer pauses, and tells Montag, “I feel like we’re doing something sneaky and shady.” As Montag begins to cry, she says, “Of course I want my mom here.” Pratt responds, “I just want to give you the wedding of your dreams that you have been talking about for three years. I’ll deal with it It’s worth it to be with you the rest of my life. We’ll do it the way you want, I’m sorry, I love you so much.”

On the Hills after-show, Pratt and Montag appeared live in studio for the first time. Said Pratt: “Things are better since we didn’t legalize the wedding. Now I can live throughout 2009. They didn’t show the look of death in her [mom's] eyes on the episode!” Added Montag: “I want cakes and bridesmaids, two of them are standing right here,” referring to Holly Montag and Stephanie Pratt.

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag don’t appear to be any closer to getting legally hitched.

A brief tease for the fourth season finale of MTV’s “The Hills” that aired Monday seemed to indicate that the reality TV couple have made their unofficial Mexican wedding ceremony a legitimate marriage in California. The pair were shown walking into a courtroom with Pratt’s sister, Stephanie Pratt, while a judge smiled down on them from the bench.

“I, Heidi, take thee, Spencer,” Montag coos in the preview.

Despite all the official trappings, the tease of legitimate nuptials for the pair may be just that. A Los Angeles Superior Court official said Tuesday that MTV was recently granted permission to shoot in a courtroom in Beverly Hills, but it was done after hours — and that’s not one of their judges sitting on the bench in “The Hills” footage.

MTV was granted permission to film “what purported to be a wedding outside of court hours” at the Beverly Hills courthouse, court spokesman Allan Parachini said Tuesday. He did not know who the participants were in the wedding, but Parachini said court officials wanted the filming to be treated as a news event.
The preview for next week’s season finale features a wood-paneled courtroom with the California state seal perched on the wall behind a judge. Civil ceremonies are sometimes performed at the Beverly Hills courthouse, but not in the manner portrayed in the brief preview. If a judge does preside, it is typically in chambers during a break, Parachini said.

Pratt, 25, and Montag, 22, acknowledged that their Nov. 19 marriage ceremony near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, was entirely symbolic, despite appearing on the Nov. 26 cover of Us Weekly with the headline “Heidi & Spencer Elope!” Monday’s episode of “The Hills” depicted the pair spontaneously agreeing to exchange vows after downing several shots of tequila.

“In my mind, it’s as legal as the ring on my finger,” Pratt told Us Weekly.

A check of marriage records last week did not reveal any filings by Pratt or Montag in Los Angeles County, although the couple could get married in any county in California as well as opt for a confidential license. Officials at two courthouses in neighboring Orange County said they have not received requests from MTV to film in their facilities.

The couple and MTV did not immediately return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

In a pre-taped interview on Monday’s Hills after-show, Tom Cruise was asked what advice he had for Spencer Pratt, who famously eloped with Heidi Montag Nov. 20.

Cruise said that Pratt may have made a mistake since Montag had always talked about wanting a big wedding with her family.

“If the girl wants the wedding, you gotta do the wedding,” Cruise said. “It’s a special occasion, and she’ll remember it forever. Spencer… dude… you’ll realize this later.”

In a response, Pratt tells Usmagazine.com exclusively: “You all know how I feel about big weddings, but if Tom Cruise says so, it must be true. If Tom’s the best man, we’ll have a big wedding!”

Meanwhile, Spencer’s sister Stephanie has revealed that Heidi’s mom Darlene phoned Mrs. Pratt after her Us Weekly interview, in which she said Spencer may have drugged Heidi to get her to marry him.

“Heidi’s mom actually called my mom and was really apologetic and crying,” said Stephanie, who added that Darlene’s comments to Us were “tongue-in-cheek.”

Believe it or not, Stephanie added, “the general consensus, with all the family members, is that we’re all really happy for them.”

Newlywed Spencer Pratt called Ryan Seacrest’s radio show Thursday to respond to comments made by Heidi Montag’s mom detesting their recent elopment in Mexico.

Heidi’s mom, Darlene Egelhoff, recently opened up to Us Magazine claiming that her daughter may have been drugged by Spencer prior to their trip to Mexico.

Egelhoff told Us Magazine she gives the new marriage “six months” saying “I think it’s the biggest mistake Heidi’s ever made.”

Pratt fired back quipping “It was totally spur of the moment, if i had planned it I think I would’ve stepped up my ring game a little bit.”

“I can’t wait to prove her wrong and be married for the rest of our lives,” explained Pratt. “I’m sure she’s just hurt and reacting crazy because she wasn’t there.”

In the interview, Pratt said he filmed a scene for The Hills with Heidi’s mom Wednesday.

“We just filmed togther yesterday on The Hills which was pretty much the most insane day of my entire life,” said Pratt.

Will Spencer and Heidi be spending the holidays with Heidi’s mom?

“The Pratts – as in Heidi Pratt and Spencer Pratt – will probably have their own christmas tree,” stated Pratt.

Heidi Montag’s mom opens up in the new issue of Us Weekly about her “devastation” over her perceived loss of her daughter to Spencer Pratt – whom, she says, may have even drugged Montag before their surprise Mexico elopement.

“He’s manipulative and seems to have power over Heidi,” Darlene Egelhoff, 46, told Us in an exclusive interview from her home in Crested Butte, Colorado the day after Montag, 22, blew off Thanksgiving with her family to stay with Pratt in Cabo San Lucas., the site of her Nov. 20 elopement. “I would like to see a blood test from Mexico. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had her drugged.”

“Spencer has tried to cut everyone out of her life,” Egelhoff tells Us. “I’ve been honest with Heidi, and it’s caused our relationship to decline. I’m more devastated about that than the marriage, because I’m confident the marriage won’t work out.”

Egelhoff – who divorced Montag’s dad when she was just 3 and admits she rushed into things too – says they used to be inseparable.

“She was my Velcro, always attached to me,” says Egelhoff. “I want the best for my daughter – and he’s definitely not it. I think Spencer wants to possess Heidi more than marry her.”

Adds Egelhoff – who famously fought with Pratt, 25, on The Hills: “God says love your enemies, but I never expected it to be my son-in-law.”

So how long does she give their marriage?

“Six months,” she says.

“I think it’s the biggest mistake Heidi’s ever made,” Egelhoff adds.

In the new issue of Us Weekly, Montag responds, telling Us she didn’t want Egelhoff present at her nuptials because she was “starting so much drama.”

“She should be happy I found someone I love,” the bride tells Us. “Some people go their entire lives without finding that.”

Adds Pratt, who famously calls Egelhoff “Stalker Mom”: “I think her mom needs to take a real fat chill pill and be happy for her daughter.”

After all the moving in and the fallings out, the first proposal and the post-engagement lull, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag eloped last Thursday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Now that they’ve made it official, what will their marriage mean for the show that has chronicled their relationship over the past four seasons?

Will the next season of “The Hills” feature footage captured during Speidi’s wedding ceremony? What have Heidi and Spencer been up to since they tied the knot? To find out, we reached out to executive producer Liz Gateley.

While she couldn’t tell us everything, she did say that the couple’s married life will figure prominently on the series’ upcoming fifth season, and that cameras are still down in Mexico, documenting the couple’s honeymoon. There’s still no word on when new episodes of “The Hills” will be ready for air, however.

“MTV is currently filming Heidi and Spencer in Mexico, as we were expecting to capture them on vacation,” Gateley told MTV News. “Fans will be able to see the exclusive footage from the ceremony in an upcoming episode, and we will continue to follow the newlyweds’ relationship as it plays out in real life.”

While most fans of the show seemed to question the wisdom of the marriage, and their family appeared shocked by the elopement, some celebrities and fellow “Hills” stars congratulated the couple on Tuesday.

“They obviously adore each other and are very committed to one another,” Audrina Patridge told People. “I do think it’s very romantic that they eloped.”
