Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, the reality-TV couple whose on-again, off-again relationship has been chronicled by MTV’s “The Hills” and celebrity magazines, appear on the Wednesday cover of Us Weekly with the headline “Heidi & Spencer Elope!”

But the couple acknowledged Wednesday that their wedding ceremony near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico — featured in a photo spread in the magazine — was symbolic, and not legally binding. At least not yet.

“We had a beautiful ceremony here … officiated by a minister and photographed by the hotel photographer. We’ve never been happier,” said the couple in a statement provided by Us Weekly. “And, like other elopements that happen outside the country, we’ll take care of the legal details when we get home.”
They did not say specifically when where they would seek to make their marriage official, which would likely require a separate ceremony in the U.S.

The public pair provided photos to the magazine for its issue on newsstands Wednesday showing their ceremony at a chapel near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Nov. 20. The accompanying story features an interview with Montag and Pratt, as well as details about the rings, Montag’s dress, and the content of their handwritten vows.

The story doesn’t note that they had neither obtained a marriage license nor taken part in a separate civil ceremony, which is required by Mexican law to make the union binding.

A couple can register their marriage up to 10 days after a ceremony, but California does not recognize marriage ceremonies outside the United States, according to the state’s Department of Public Health. A couple can petition a court later to have their marriage legally recognized.

Us Weekly’s report, which was picked up by numerous celebrity magazines and blogs, said that none of the couple’s friends or relatives was in attendance. Some people close to the couple said they were caught off-guard.

“Everybody’s pretty upset,” Montag’s sister, Holly Montag, told MTV on Monday. Montag’s father, Bill Montag, told People magazine that he’d be dismayed if his daughter got married and didn’t invite him.

If the story were true, he added, “Then we just have to have another wedding here!”

Us Weekly, which has featured the couple in numerous cover stories and photo spreads, reported that the two decided to get married while drinking margaritas on the beach. An hour later, they were exchanging vows, the magazine said.

Americans who wish to get married in Mexico must go through a process that takes about five days, according to Mexico’s foreign relations department Web site. They must obtain a health certificate, including blood test results from a local doctor; and provide official translations of legal documents, such as birth certificates.

Only civil, nonreligious marriages conducted in Mexico are valid internationally. Peter Grossman of Us Weekly, who conducted the wedding-day interview with Pratt, 25, and Montag, 22, confirmed that the two exchanged rings and handwritten vows in front of a minister.

“Heidi and Spencer are two people in love who had a beautiful wedding ceremony to celebrate that,” Grossman said. “The pictures and words in our issue this week bear that out.”

“The Hills” executive producer Liz Gateley said Wednesday that the couple’s wedding and honeymoon will appear in future episodes of the MTV reality show.
“MTV is currently filming Heidi and Spencer in Mexico, as we were expecting to capture them on vacation,” Gateley told MTV News. “Fans will be able to see the exclusive footage from the ceremony in an upcoming episode, and we will continue to follow the newlyweds’ relationship as it plays out in real life.”

Since Montag and Pratt’s pairing came to light on the MTV reality show, the two have been ever camera-ready, willing to pose or invite photographers to capture their “private” moments — including an intimate, champagne-and-roses Valentine’s Day celebration aboard a chartered boat earlier this year.

Introducing, Mrs. Heidi Montag Pratt!

The Hills star wed her longtime beau, Spencer Pratt, in a secret ceremony in Cabos San Lucas, Mexico, on Nov. 20, Us Weekly reports in its newest issue. See exclusive photos wedding photos in Us Weekly’s new issue, on stands Wednesday.

“The minute we said our vows, I couldn’t stop crying,” Montag, 22, tells Us.

At the altar, Pratt, 25, told his bride: “Heidi, from the moment you came into my life, I knew my life would never be the same without you. You are the light in my life like the sun to the earth! Your loving warmth makes me want to be a better person. Being with you, I feel complete. I’m honored to even be able to call you my wife. You are the most amazing, loving and caring woman on this planet. I will love you forever and always.”

Someone who might not be so thrilled? Montag’s mother.

“I called her right before the ceremony, sort of hinted that something that happened, but her reaction was to ask me if we were breaking up! I told her it might be something else, and she said, ‘Well, if you ever plan on getting married just know that your stepdad is really upset that you want your father to walk you down the aisle,’” Montag tells Us.

“She was starting so much drama, it kind of pushed me toward wanting to get married without that,” she adds. “I don’t know when I’ll tell her.”

Pratt and Montag have had a tumultuous relationship.

In 2007, Pratt popped the question (after just eight months of dating) with a diamond-encrusted platinum band set with a purple stone that he’d purchased from the mall.

But after bickering over Pratt hitting on women in a club, the pair took a “relationship vacation” just a few months later.

“I’d just turned 21, and it was scary because I was so young,” Montag told Us following the split.

(What happened to the bling? “I turned it into a pendant,” Montag told Us in December. “It wasn’t my dream ring. I don’t like what it represents. I might sell it.”)

The pair gave it another go in May 2008, after a secret make-or-break getaway to Mexico where “Heidi read me biblical passages like ‘Honor thy wife,’” Pratt explained.

By the end, he’d convinced her to plan their wedding again.

“I’m ready to marry Spencer,” Montag told Us that month. “He’s my soulmate.”

Montag was BFFs with Lauren Conrad until early 2007, when Pratt urged Montag to move out of Conrad’s apartment and in with him.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are following in Britney’s footsteps!

The Hills stars are guest starring on How I Met Your Mother in an episode set to air this January, CBS told Usmagazine.comin a statement Monday.

“Heidi and I are honored to be part of such a successful show,” Pratt told Us.

He joked: “I don’t want to give anything away…but I’m the Mother.”’

“They will be playing magazine cover-versions of themselves as Marshall (Jason Segel) desperately searches for a place to “read a magazine” while at the office,” CBS said in the statement. “Montag and Pratt will taunt and tease Marshall from the confines of his current copy of Them Weekly.”

Montag and Pratt will film their segments this week.

“We can confirm that Heidi and Spencer will appear on the show, but we can’t give away anything specific about the episode,” Co-creator and Executive-Producer Craig Thomas said. “All we can say is that they play themselves.”

It was announced Monday that Spears nominated for a People’s Choice Award for her role on How I Met Your Mother.

The category? Favorite scene-stealing star.

The singer starred as a dorky receptionist named Abby in two episodes of the CBS show earlier this year. On her first appearance in March, she helped the show win its highest ratings ever.

Heidi Montag turned the big 2-2 Monday with a picnic with beau Spencer Pratt.

“I got some amazing gifts and a cake that said, ‘Happy Birthday, Princess Heidi!’” she said Tuesday on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show.

And although Pratt didn’t surprise her with a ring, he told Seacrest their engagement “is definitely imminent.”

As for that rock, Pratt (who was previously engaged to Montag before they briefly split) said, “she’s dreaming big.”

Pratt added that Montag has also been nagging him about starting a family.

“Heidi talks about lots of kids all the time,” he said. “She wakes up with these great dreams about five kids.”

Montag then interrupted, “I want, like, four. Maybe I’ll adopt 10. I want to have my own orphanage like Mother Teresa.”

For now, Pratt said, “I am fighting her everyday – [she wants] kittens and puppies.”

Has Montag’s latest milestone given her a change of heart when it comes to foe Lauren Conrad? (On Monday’s episode of The Hills, both admitted they miss each other.)

“It’s hard to say, and I don’t talk to her about it,” Montag said. “Obviously, a part of her misses me, and we were close. It’s natural to miss each other.”

But she doesn’t want the bickering to carry on.

“I’m 22 now, so I’m really grown up,” she went on. “Life is really short, and I don’t need negative energy. There are children who are sick in the worst and, like, important matters, and it’s such a waste of time to be fighting and angry.”

Surprise! Spencer Pratt is a huge fan of Heidi Montag’s new ’80s-inspired music video, “Overdosin.’”

“What do you think I work out to every day? I know the whole thing by heart!” he told Usmagazine.com at the Pepsi 500 Running Wide Open Party in Hollywood on Wednesday.

“I wanted to do something fun with aerobics,” Montag explained of the video, in which she plays an aerobics instructor and dances around in lycra, legwarmers and a sweatband (Watch here).

No wonder Pratt’s a fan: the song “is about when you fall in love with someone,” Montag told Ryan Seacrest. “[It's] about how I feel about Spencer and my relationship.”

Meanwhile, the Hills drama has divided Pratt and his sister Stephanie.

“She jumped ship,” he told Us. “She went off the plank. We are not talking.

“We just never used to talk,” he added. “I only talked to her when I got booted from my place and I was on her couch.”

Montag also revealed that her sister Holly and nemesis Lauren Conrad are “friendly” but, “I don’t know if they are neccessarily friends.”

“I used to live with Lauren and Holly lived with us for awhile so they were friends and my sister can be friends with whoever she wants,” Montag told Us.

Though Montag endorsed John McCain for president, the couple have no plans to attend the upcoming Republican National Convention.

“I don’t think we have enough time,” Montag told Extra on Wednesday.

When asked who McCain will choose as his running mate, Montag said, “I am McCain’s vice president! Go Team!”

The Hills promises to pack plenty of drama as its fourth season begins Monday on MTV (10 p.m. ET). But as usual some of that drama is unspooling off camera–at least when it comes to the reality-couple-people-love-to-hate, namely Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt.

“I think that maybe Lauren is tired of [being on the show], but we’re just beginning,” Montag told Ryan Seacrest during an interview Monday on his KIIS-FM radio show. “We’re not even remotely sick of it.”

Montag – and fiancé Spencer Pratt – quickly shot down talk that the MTV reality soap opera would not continue for a fifth season. Pratt says that even if Hills star Lauren Conrad opts out of a new season, he and Montag would happily take over her narrator duties.

“Sometimes the narrator has to throw their hate up on the wall and pass the mic,” Pratt said, adding, “It’s my favorite show. I love it. The Hills season 10 is what I’m going for.”

Not that the two aren’t staying busy with other projects.

Montag, who’s already released several singles, unveiled her latest electronic-pop offering on Seacrest’s show, “Overdosin’. “It’s about when you fall in love with someone,” Montag explained. “[About] how I feel about Spencer and my relationship.”

In the bubbly – and electronically-enhanced – song, Montag sings, “Don’t care what you put me through / I can’t get enough of you.”
Given the song’s autobiographical nature, Seacrest couldn’t help but press the two on their future plans – namely, if a wedding was in the cards – or at least fodder for a follow-up song.

Joked Montag: I’m waiting for the ring to make that song.” –Brian Orloff
