Kurt Russell remembers one jolting Christmas: “My sister’s house burned down when she plugged in the tree. Literally, in a matter of a minute and a half, the house burned down. So I learned the value of a plastic Christmas tree that year.”

Chris O’Donnell learned the hard way not to peek before Santa arrived: “My sister and I . . . kicked open the door to the basement and discovered where the presents were hidden. My mom came down and found us down there with everything already opened. On Christmas morning, those presents were gone. She had taken them all back to the store.”

Laura Linney’s pooch ruined one Christmas: “My mother had saved all this money to buy her [friend] some Godiva chocolates, which we wrapped and put under the tree. My dog sniffed them out, ate the entire box and then got sick all over the apartment for about four days. Then, to add insult to injury, the dog had the runs all over the house. It was terrible.”

Stephanie March, of “Law & Order: SVU,” says she can never forget her worst present: “My dad gave me a fly-fishing rod. My sister and I both got them the same year, and we were, like, ‘What the hell is that?’ And he was, like, ‘It’s a fly-fishing rod!’ I was, like, ‘We live in Dallas. Where are we supposed to use this?’ And, also, we don’t fish!”

Marg Helgenberger also got a stinker of a gift: “When I was a little girl, I asked for a horse for Christmas. My parents gave me a guinea pig instead – and then told me to pretend it was a horse.”

Liv Tyler was given a Slinky when she was 12 – but thought it was a bracelet and hated it.

Amy Brenneman says she lost the faith at the age of 6 when she found a Barbie set under the tree – and then noticed Santa had left the price tag on the box.
