WILL Smith wisely backed away from comments he made to a Scottish reporter about Adolf Hitler. But Smith, who is new best friends with Scientologist Tom Cruise, may have slipped up on a second front. The “I Am Legend” star, who’s never confirmed rumors he’s become a member of the sect, certainly sounded like a Scientologist when he was discussing the Fuhrer, who was responsible for World War II and the annihilation of 6 million Jews. Smith told Scotland’s Daily Record: “Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘Let me do the most evil thing I can do today. I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was good. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming.” Scientologists believe in a process of reprogramming which leads to being “clear.” But Smith blamed the reporter for taking his remarks out of context. “It is an awful and disgusting lie,” he said in a statement. “It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person with a pen. I am incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such ludicrous misinterpretation . . . Hitler was a vile, heinous, vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on this planet.” Even L. Ron Hubbard would agree.
