Kanye West earned his GQ Men of the Year stripes last night at the Chateau Marmont in LA. The rapper put on a brave face as he made his first social appearance since breaking down publicly in the wake of his mom Donda’s sudden death last month.

Rocking his usual preppy wear in a flannel oxford and tech vest, Kanye turned up briefly in recognition of the magazine’s annual effort to celebrate influential men. The often outspoken star seemed a little subdued and somber but appeared to be more at ease while talking to pals Pharrell Williams and Eve. The hip-hop stars stood at a private booth on the patio, none drinking but all enjoying the A-list crowd.

Meanwhile at a bar inside, two other leading men were discussing family matters. Brothers & Sisters’ Dave Annable and Grey’s Anatomy’s Justin Chambers were chatting about the humble beginnings of their fathers. Dave marveled at his own career path in contrast to his dad’s, an electrician.

The dad chat must have stirred something in father-of-five Justin, who afterwards plopped down at a piano with a glass of red wine and fiddled with the keys for the better part of an hour.

It’s nice to see a Man of the Year getting sentimental about dear old dad.
