Tarnished NFL star Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison on Monday for his involvement in a dogfighting operation.
Formerly a quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, Vick began serving his sentence three weeks ago after turning himself in early and arrived at court this morning wearing a black-and-white-striped prison jumpsuit.
Michael, 27, pleaded guilty last August to financing the Bad Newz Kennels dogfighting and gambling ring and helping to kill six to eight pitbulls who were not fit to be fighting dogs.
U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson called Michael’s conduct “cruel and inhumane.”
“I’m willing to deal with the consequences and accept responsibility for my actions,” Michael told the court. He apologized to his family, prompting the judge to say, “You need to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you.”
Michael, who admitted that he used “poor judgment,†also received three years’ probation.
“Dogfighting is a terrible thing and I do reject it,” he later told reporters outside the courthouse. “I will redeem myself. I have to.”
