Is it the most romantic birthday present ever – or a star showing off?
Most people of Bowen thought the former, after Keith Urban cordonned off a section of the small town and put on a birthday fireworks display for his wife Nicole Kidman.
The country rocker’s plans to celebrate her 40th milestone were adapted at the last moment after his initial plot – to throw a big party – was scuppered by the birthday girl herself.
Today, as the couple celebrate their first wedding anniversary, locals revealed how Kidman, who is in town with a host of stars filming war epic Australia, declared she did not want a big bash.
So Urban adjusted and organised a surprise fireworks display from Flagstaff Hill.
“He brought her up the hill and they sat on a couch outside on the lawn,” Three Sixty on the Hill Restaurant proprietor Jenny Curtis said yesterday.
“It was so romantic,” she said.
Jenny said it had been intended to have a party in the restaurant, which was normally closed on Wednesday.
“But that was all cancelled because Nicole found out about it and she wanted a quiet affair,” she said.
“So then Keith just surprised her with a fireworks display.”
The hill was closed off to the public for the couple for about 30 minutes.
“It was just a private thing with him and her,” Jenny said. “She wanted a very low key affair,” she said.
The fireworks included a “Happy Birthday, Nicole” set on a grid close to the ground.
“After it was over, Nicole said she wanted to thank the council and the town for allowing her to have this for her birthday,” she said.
“She hoped the town liked it as well.”
It might have been Kidman’s 40th birthday this week, but no one in Bowen was as excited as Frangipani Florists Julie Gardiner.
“I have spoken to Nicoles mum, her aunty, and I have got an order from Tom Cruise and Kate Holmes and the kids, and one from 20th Century Fox,” she told the Bowen Independent last Wednesday as she prepared to send the flowers out for Kidman.
“It is so exciting I have had phone calls from Beverley Hills and Los Angeles.
“This is just blowing my mind.
“I am only a small town florist – for this to happen its a once in a lifetime thing for me.”
And what types of flowers were people sending the star?
“They like the roses, the oriental lilies, gerberas, the tulips and tropicals,” Julie said.
“I had to order from Africa gardenias for her birthday party – they cant be touched with human hands.
“They have to be handled with gloves.
“The flowers are not much bigger than a 50 cent piece.”
They were ordered last week by Kidmans personal assistant in America and flown in from Africa.
Kidman had the day off from filming on the set of Australia for her birthday .
The celebrations for Kidman and Urban are set to continue next week when they celebrate their first wedding anniversary on Monday.
