Elton John says he’s been sober for 20 years, since shortly after the death of an Indiana teen with AIDS who the musician credits with inspiring him to turn his life around.

John was in Indianapolis on Wednesday to headline a benefit celebrating the life and legacy of Ryan White. The 18-year-old died on April 8, 1990, about five years after contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, through a tainted blood transfusion to treat his hemophilia.

The singer befriended the boy during his public battle for acceptance after he was banned from a central Indiana school at age 13, bringing national attention to HIV/AIDS education and the plight of children with HIV in the 1980s. John was at Riley Children’s Hospital when White died and was a pallbearer and performed at the funeral.

“It was one of the greatest things in my life to meet Ryan’s family, to be there the last week to try and help, and then for that wonderful message that he gave me to change my life around,” John told The Associated Press before the Wednesday evening benefit. “It was weird to take stock and think of it – I’m 20 years sober this year, and it’s 20 years since Ryan died, because I got sober shortly afterward.”

Proceeds from the event, which was being hosted by Phil Donahue, will benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum’s “Power of Children” exhibit, which features White.

John established the foundation two years after White’s death. The organization funds innovative HIV prevention and education programs, works to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, and provides direct care and support services for patients.

The 20-year anniversary of White’s death is an opportunity to restart a dialogue about AIDS and push for educating children about the disease, John said.

“Every 10 years, a new generation of kids come up, and we see the numbers go up, because we can’t really get to them in school,” John said. “We never could. Education about sex and education about AIDS was totally forbidden. That could have saved so many more lives, because children are smart. Children will listen. You don’t have to threaten children, you just have to inform them.”

“It took a child to die to make people sit up and notice,” he added.

White’s mother, Jeanne White-Ginder, said John’s return to Indianapolis was a bittersweet reminder of her son’s last days.

White-Ginder said John played “secretary” during White’s final days, filtering phone calls and telegrams and making sure those who sent flowers were acknowledged.

“One of the most beautiful scenes I think I can remember is walking into Ryan’s room and seeing Elton standing on a chair decorating Ryan’s room,” White-Ginder said Wednesday. “He said, ‘When he wakes up, I want him to know how much he was loved.’ That really touched me as a mom because I hadn’t thought to do that.”

She said it was special to have John back to mark the 20th anniversary of her son’s death.

“I’ve always felt like he was my guardian angel,” she said.

John gives similar credit to White-Ginder, and to the family that helped him find purpose.

“Jeannie’s incredible fortitude in going through this as a mother – I never saw her crack. The last week, there were some tense moments, and it was very emotional, but I never saw Ryan crack,” John said. “It was just an amazing lesson in how to live life in the best possible way.”

Part of the stage being set up for a weekend concert by singer Elton John at Mexico’s famed Chichen Itza ruins collapsed during construction, injuring three workers, authorities said Thursday.

Two of the workers were treated for slight injuries and released, and the third was hospitalized with a broken leg. The British singer was not present when the accident occurred Wednesday night.

“There has been no discussion of canceling the event” scheduled for Saturday, said Francisco de Anda, a spokesman for Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History, which is in charge of the country’s pre-Hispanic sites.

The institute said there was no damage to the 1,200-year-old Mayan ruins. De Anda said the stage was put up at a distance from the pyramid and temples, precisely to avoid any potential damage.

De Anda said the upper lighting rails of the metal structure collapsed onto the stage area. The rails are used to hold spotlights and other technical equipment.

He said outside experts had been called in to review the structure to ensure it – or a replacement – could be safely installed.

Some Mexicans have opposed holding concerts at the ruin site, claiming it demeans their cultural significance and endangers the stone structures.

More than a half dozen concerts have been held at Chichen Itza since Luciano Pavarotti sang there in 1997. In 2008, tenor Placido Domingo drew about 4,000 spectators to a concert without incident.

Chichen Itza was named one of “New Seven Wonders of the World” in 2007.

A Georgia man who posted a video on YouTube of himself calling for Elton John’s death has been arrested for making terroristic threats.

Atlanta Police Sgt. Curtis Davenport says Neal Horsley was arrested for making terroristic threats early Wednesday in Carrollton, about 50 miles west of Atlanta. Davenport would not say who Horsley is accused of threatening.

Horsley’s son, Nathan Horsley, says he believes the arrest is connected to the video about the musician.

Neal Horsley complains in the video about John’s comments in a magazine interview last month that Jesus Christ was gay.

Horsley was being held Thursday in the Fulton County jail on $40,000 bond.

John’s publicist, Fran Curtis, had no comment.

Sir Elton John’s 2010 post-Oscars AIDS Foundation party was a hit – the singer raised a massive $3.7 million in just a few hours at the lavish star-studded bash.

The Rocket Man hitmaker and his partner David Furnish invited a host of celebrities, including Betty White, Nicole Richie and Victoria Beckham, to attend the 18th annual celebration, which raises money for the fight against AIDS.

After a lavish dinner and a performance by Grace Jones, guests were invited to participate in a live auction, where John sold the costume he wore at the Grammy Awards in January for $30,000 and a watch from his collection for $90,000.

Also up for grabs was a photo of U.S. President Barack Obama at college, which sold for $60,000, and private tennis lessons from Andre Agassi and Steffi Graff, which raised $70,000.

The generous host also took in $140,000 by auctioning off a week-long stay at his home in Nice, France.

He said, “I’m so blown away this year. We’re supposedly struggling though a recession and yet it keeps getting better every year.”

Grace Jones will perform at this year’s Elton John AIDS Foundation’s annual Oscar viewing party on March 7 at the Pacific Design Center in LA.

Details are still under wraps, but as with recent shows at Hammerstein Ballroom and the Hollywood Bowl, the 61-year-old singer’s act will include a lengthy wait to take the stage and multiple, dramatic costume changes.

In past years, Elton booked such artists as Mary J. Blige, Raphael Saadiq and the Scissor Sisters.

This party was a real surprise.

An 18th birthday bash for Donatella Versace’s daughter was merely a ruse for an Elton John-led intervention that sent the cocaine-addled designer to rehab, a new book says.

“House of Versace,” by Deborah Ball, details the June 30, 2004, soiree where Donatella was confronted about the drug use that threatened her life and her multi-million dollar company.

The “party” started with Versace slipping into a bathroom at her Milan mansion to snort a line of coke – just before John’s surprise arrival, the book reveals.

The chart-topping rocker and longtime friend put the intervention in motion six weeks earlier after watching a sobbing and shaking Donatella at one of his concerts.

“You people are doing nothing but enabling Donatella by protecting her!” the singer railed at Versace’s top assistant. “She’s going to die if we don’t do something!”

The showdown was timed to coincide with Allegra Versace’s birthday, and the teen joined John in confronting her mother.

The plan worked. The drug-addicted designer climbed aboard a private plane that night and flew to The Meadows, a rehabilitation facility in Wickenberg, Ariz.

The 343-page book says that Donatella’s appetite for cocaine left her paranoid, semi-coherent and erratic. Her wild mood swings frightened her two children.

The designer bottomed out during the debut of her men’s collection just weeks before she cleaned up, the book reports.

During a dress rehearsal, Donatella sat on a sofa “so dazed that her bodyguards had to sit on either side of her to prop her up.”

The emaciated design doyenne then held a rambling news conference so embarrassing that it led a longtime Versace executive to quit.

As her drug spiral worsened, Donatella snorted cocaine openly in front of employees, before fashion shows and at after-parties while security stood outside the bathroom door, the book said.

Her taste for the highlife grew along with her appetite for drugs, the book said. She flew only on private jets, hired $5,000-a-day stylists and used only the priciest models, like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

Among her favorite drug buddies was Madonna’s brother Christopher Ciccone, the book said, and the pair went on a three-day cocaine binge before a 1998 fashion show.

After a Metropolitan Museum of Art memorial service for her slain brother Gianni in 1997, Dontella also reportedly did lines of coke with Ciccone and rocker Courtney Love.

Elton John surprised audiences nine years ago when he performed at the Grammys with Eminem.

This year, he’s planning a similar move. Spies say he’ll join Lady Gaga onstage Sunday.

John — at a dinner Tuesday for Rainbow Media hosted by Sundance Channel and IFC head Evan Shapiro at the Deer Valley Lodge in Park City, Utah — refused to comment on the rumor. But perhaps it’s a quid pro quo — Gaga is slated to perform at the Feb. 10 AmFAR benefit at Cipriani 42nd Street, where Elton is being honored.

Elton John’s attempts to help wayward celebrities get their lives back under control haven’t always been well received.

But it has emerged that one star who is more than happy to benefit from the singer’s well-meaning intervention is Eminem.

Unlike George Michael, who attacked Elton when he offered help, the U.S. rapper has accepted assistance with his well-publicised drug problem.

Elton told Danny Baker on Radio 5: ‘I’ve been helping Eminem over the last 18 months and he’s doing brilliantly.

‘I’m there if people want my help. If people ask for help you tell them where to go but there’s no point advising people if they don’t want to do it.’

Eminem went into rehab for addiction to sleeping pills in 2005 and then took a three-year break from his career.

‘It’s no secret I had a drug problem,’ he later told Vibe magazine.

‘If I was to give you a number of Vicodin I would actually take in a day? Anywhere between 10 to 20.

‘Valium, Ambien, the numbers got so high I don’t even know what I was taking.’

Elton, who battled drug and drink problems throughout his own career, admitted drugs made him ‘cocky’ and ‘arrogant’ before he kicked his habit.

Since his recovery he has counselled celebrities, including Michael Jackson, but recently made headlines after George Michael attacked him in an interview for interfering.

Elton was said to be concerned for Michael’s health because of his drug-taking and sexual tastes but was told unceremoniously that he ‘should shut up and get on with his own life’.

Elton said he knew Michael had criticised him in the past but said it was ‘none of my business’.

He also said he felt sorry for singers ‘catapulted to fame’ on reality television who struggled to cope when their careers declined.

He said: ‘Suddenly they become very famous, like Joe (McElderry) who just won X Factor, who is a sweetheart but he’s got to go and play live and he’s had no experience of doing that.’
