Jay-Z, on the cover of GQ magazine’s upcoming Men of the Year issue, wants to be a better pop than his absentee dad.

The hip-hop mogul, who’s expecting a baby girl with wife Beyoncé, said losing his dad hurt more than never having him. “If your dad died before you were born, yeah, it hurts — but it’s not like you had a connection with something that was real,” Jay-Z tells GQ.

Jay-Z’s dad left his family early on. “My dad was such a good dad that when he left, he left a huge scar,” Jay-Z said, adding, “I bet [my dad] didn’t believe he’d spaz out and leave either.”

Kanye West made a surprise appearance with Jay Z at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York on Wednesday, four years after he cancelled a performance at the event due to his mother’s death.

The rapper had been booked to perform at the lingerie catwalk show in 2007, but he pulled out after the loss of his mother, Dr. Donda West, who died after suffering complications from cosmetic surgery.

West took to the stage for a surprise appearance at the 2011 show at Manhattan’s Lexington Avenue Armory and before bursting into a rendition of his hit track Stronger, he told the crowd, “In 2007, I was supposed to perform this song… then my mom passed away. She was my superhero – now she’s my super-angel.”

He was later joined on stage by his Watch The Throne collaborator Jay Z.

The night also included a performance by Nicki Minaj and Maroon 5′s Adam Levine, who sang Moves Like Jagger as he escorted his supermodel girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna down the runway.

Orlando Bloom’s model wife Miranda Kerr was another star of the show as she took to the catwalk wearing a bra made from $2.5 million-worth of diamonds.

Things are going to change around Beyonce’s house now that she’s pregnant, and one of them might be husband Jay-Z’s cologne.

Talking to “Entertainment Tonight Canada” Wednesday, the “1+1″ singer revealed that one thing pregnancy has changed about her is her sense of smell.

“My nose is like doot doot doot,” the superstar, 30, said, imitating a radar. “I smell everything.”

There is one thing that has started to smell especially unpleasant — her husband.

“If [something] smells bad, I smell it,” Beyonce revealed. “My husband’s fragrance, this one that I always love, I hate right now.”

Luckily, she was still enjoying the scent of Pulse, the fragrance she launched Sept. 22 at Macy’s in New York City.

And since she’s perfectly fine with the way Pulse smells, she wouldn’t mind too much if Jay-Z wore that.

“I think it’s good for a man,” she said of the scent.

Fans said the music mogul was getting a VIP tour of the field before the Jets game when he sauntered up to the military squad and asked to pose with their rifles.

“He handed his phone to Joy Bryant and asked her to take his picture before he asked for a second gun and posed up, ‘Scarface’ style, with a gun in each hand.”

Another source told us Jay was proudly showing the picture to guests at Steve Stoute’s book launch at Julian Schnabel’s pad on Tuesday.

Jay-Z – who teamed up with Kanye West on the new record- spent a grand total of $250,000 on champagne at the party, which was held at Miami’s Fontainebleau resort.

At one point during the celebration, four muscle-bound men reportedly carried in a golden ice bucket holding 20 bottles of Armand de Brignac champagne.

Jay also splashed out $95,000 on a 15 litre bottle of Armand de Brignac’s special Ace of Spades bubbly.

A witness said: “It takes two people to serve the champagne due to the size and weight of the bottle!”

Both the resort and Ace of Spades are name-checked on the ‘Watch the Throne’ track ‘ Primetime’. Among Jay’s party guests were DJ Clue, Ne-Yo and Kim Porter.

Unfortunately neither his wife, Beyonce Knowles, not Kanye could appear at the party as the former was performing in New York and the latter was out of the country.

A source said: “Jay Z was well behaved and laid low all night on a banquette with his entourage of boys.”

Jay-Z and Kanye West were so paranoid that their new album would leak that not even some insiders got a preview. J. Cole, the first artist signed to Hova’s Roc Nation music label, got his first listen of “Watch the Throne” just like the rest of us.

“Kanye was supposed to play it for me” at Rihanna’s July 19 concert at Nassau Coliseum, but “he never got a chance,” Cole said. “I heard it like everybody else, on iTunes.”

The St. John’s grad, who played to a packed Bowery Ballroom Tuesday night as part of Heineken’s Red Star Access Roc Nation Tour, is awaiting the Sept. 27 release of his debut album, “Cole World: The Sideline Story.” But he says he expects it to leak sooner. That’s showbiz.

Sources say the rappers — who call themselves The Throne and are releasing their expected blockbuster collaboration Aug. 8 on iTunes and four days later everywhere else — are barely speaking to each other as they iron out the details of their upcoming tour.

Live Nation’s presale event on Thursday was delayed, but tickets for the tour are slated to go on sale today, with shows at the IZOD Center Sept. 27 and 28.

The sources say West wants flashy concerts with “next-level production,” which would cost more than $400,000 per show. Jay-Z is said to be meticulous about costs and already has a larger, long-term advance from Live Nation that he has to pay back.

“Jay-Z can’t deal with Kanye,” an insider said. “Jay is a stone-cold businessman. He wants to recoup all of his money from Live Nation. But Kanye wants to upstage rock stars with a blowout show. He doesn’t care about costs. He has a lot less to gain from the shows.”

West is expected to agree to the conditions of the tour next week, but the business argument between the powerhouse artists might have affected their backstage relationship.

Industry insiders were shocked to see West and Jay-Z perform separately with Young Jeezy last Monday night at the Highline Ballroom. “We were expecting them to come out together to perform a track from the album,” a source said. “They didn’t even go out together after the show.”

“Jay-Z is fed up with West’s antics,” another source said. “He doesn’t even want to be around him.”

However, the two are expected to perform together at a listening party tonight at The Rose Planetarium in Central Park, according to The Post’s Dan Aquilante. A Live Nation rep said, “No comment.”
