Jennifer Hudson is to open up in a TV interview about the family tragedy which saw her mother and brother murdered in a grisly killing spree.

The Dreamgirls singer/actress was left grief-stricken in October, 2008 when her mum Darnell Donerson and brother Jason were found shot dead at their Chicago, Illinois home. The body of her seven-year-old nephew, Julian King, was found in an abandoned car three days later.

Hudson is now preparing to discuss the traumatic experience on Behind The Music on VH1, which will see her “talk at length” about the murders, reports MTV News.

The star will also discuss her rise to fame on American Idol, as well as her engagement and new son, David Jr.

Hudson’s sister Julia’s estranged husband, William Balfour, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first degree murder and home invasion in connection with the triple tragedy.

Jennifer Hudson is back in the studio – and she’s hoping the second time will be a charm.

The Oscar winner is recording additional music for her upcoming album after her first batch of new tunes garnered less-than-glowing feedback. The bad news came after J Records executive Larry Jackson showcased music from Hudson’s sophomore CD at EMI Publishing’s recent upfront presentation for songwriters and producers in NYC.

So why the dismal reviews?

“The songs she recorded so far were mostly Euro-dance music suited for Rihanna or Lady Gaga,” says a music insider who attended the event. “The producers and songwriters unanimously agreed the music didn’t fit Jennifer and encouraged Larry to send her back into the studio.”

The dance-heavy musical direction came as a surprise to industry insiders, who were familiar with the R&B leanings of Hudson’s first CD. But the singer’s new sound is clearly due to the involvement of producer Rich Harrison, who’s known for helming “go-go” hits for Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Mary J. Blige.

“The consensus was that the songs were not so not J.Hud,” dishes the insider.

Hudson’s rep insists, “We’ve received terrific feedback on the material,” and says the singer is only “in the beginning stages” of recording her album.

But a second source says: “She definitely had to go back into the studio. She’ll be adding some soulful, Aretha Franklin- and Gladys Knight-type songs to the CD.”

Hudson sure isn’t wasting any time: The 28-year-old just tweeted from the recording studio.

“In the studio recording with Harvey Mason! Ryan Tedder & Rich Harrison came up with some heat,” she wrote. “We gon’ kill the game come September, y’all.”

Let’s hope so: Hudson’s next disk is pivotal, according to another music-biz insider. Says the source: “Jennifer’s first album managed to go platinum thanks to name recognition and the wave she was riding from ‘Dreamgirls,’ but it didn’t yield any major pop hits. She needs to really get on her game if she wants to continue her career as a recording artist.”

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is to star in a biopic of former South African President Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie, whose lawyers have already contacted the film makers threatening to block it.

“Winnie,” which also features Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela and is based on a book by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob, starts shooting in South Africa on May 31 and could be ready for theatres by spring next year.

Producer Andre Pieterse said Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had asked to see and approve the script before the picture went ahead, but that its backers had refused.

“A lawyer’s letter came some weeks ago,” Pieterse told reporters at the Cannes film festival, where Hudson and Howard appeared to promote the production.

“It was a benign letter and yet it contained the threat of an indictment, an interdict that could stop the picture.

“She (Madikizela-Mandela) … would like to see the script and approve. (But) the film will be made based on a screenplay that was well researched and without any interference.

“If the film maligns her in any way then there will be legal basis for her to take action.”

DIRECTOR CONFIDENT OF SUPPORT

Director Darrell Roodt was confident, however, that she would support what he described as first and foremost “an amazing love story.

“We have such a perception of her, but it’s entirely the incorrect one, because she was one of the few saviours of South Africa,” he said of a woman who supported her husband Nelson throughout his 27 years in apartheid-era jails.

“This is a woman who is just extraordinary beyond all measure and it’s high time that a great film is made about a great South African and a great human being.”

Roodt said he heard Madikizela-Mandela had been upset by Clint Eastwood’s recent South African-themed movie “Invictus” “because she was relegated to two lines in the picture.”

“It’s the same old story — Winnie is … always in the back room,” he added.

Madikizela-Mandela is one of South African politics’ most divisive figures, once hailed as “mother of the nation” but who was convicted in 1992 of kidnapping a teenaged anti-apartheid activist who was later murdered.

She has since returned from the political wilderness after a fraud conviction.

She married Mandela in 1958 and they separated in 1992, some two years after he was released from prison.

U.S. actress and singer Hudson, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for her debut film role in 2006′s “Dreamgirls,” said she initially hesitated over such a prominent role.

“It’s just a no-brainer in a way,” she told reporters. “I didn’t know much of it (her history) but of course I knew Nelson Mandela and I wanted to learn the story of Winnie and once I did I wanted to tell it.

“I have not been to South Africa, but in a way I feel like I am already starting my journey there by doing my research and learning of this culture.”

Jennifer Hudson didn’t gain a huge amount of weight when she was pregnant with her son, but it was enough to make her do a double-take when she saw a picture of herself.

“I didn’t realize it was me,” the singer and actress said Thursday. “I was like, ‘Who? … Oh, my God, this is me.’ And now when I look back, wow, look at the difference from then to now.”

Hudson, a former “American Idol” finalist who won a best supporting actress Academy Award for “Dreamgirls,” has lost the baby weight and more, and she says it’s because of Weight Watchers – for which she is the new spokeswoman.

Hudson said she has always been happy with her curves but after she gave birth to David Daniel Otunga Jr. last August she felt the need to take control of her body and her eating habits.

“How can I make a better me, or grow or do some changes, anything, just experiment, because I have me back now,” she said. “And then at the same time, having the baby … it’s like, OK, this is a good way of how I would want my child to grow up, because so many times in growing up, you gain really bad habits … so I want to make sure that he’s going into this and I’m being a good example for him.”

She said that her lifestyle change has even rubbed off on her fiance, David Otunga, who has recently been wrestling for World Wrestling Entertainment.

“Now he’s in the habit of writing down what he’s eating,” she said. “He’s doing weigh-ins. He’s super healthy, and he’s a bodybuilder type, but he is inspired by it.”

Professional wrestler David Otunga is keen for the singer to show off her vocal talents at their forthcoming nuptials along with contestants from ‘American Idol’, the show on which Jennifer first found fame.

He said: “It would be great if any of the former American Idols sang at the wedding. And it would be wonderful to have Jennifer sing – I’d love that. But I won’t be because I don’t sing!”

The couple – who met at Jennifer’s 27th birthday party in 2008 – have a six-month-old son David Jr. and they are keen for the tot to play a big part on their special day.

David said: “I want my son and I to wear matching custom tuxedos!”

A date has already been set for the nuptials and the couple are busy finalising plans.

He revealed to Life and Style magazine: “We’ve picked a date. And Jennifer has chosen her dress, but she won’t tell me much about that, obviously.

“We know who we want to design the rings – Neil Lane, he made our engagement rings. And he’s a personal friend as well.”

Grappler David – who is one of eight professional wrestlers appearing on the World Wrestling Entertainment’s new reality show ‘WWE NXT’ – recently said he wanted tie the knot in a wrestling ring.

When asked whether the WWE could convince the couple to get married in the squared circle, David joked: “We could do that. I don’t know if Jennifer would go for it, but I’d be up for it.”

David Otunga – who is one of eight professional wrestlers appearing on the World Wrestling Entertainment’s new reality show ‘WWE NXT’ – believes the squared circle would be the perfect place to tie the knot.

When asked whether the WWE could convince the couple to get married in the ring, David joked: “We could do that. I don’t know if Jennifer would go for it, but I’d be up for it.”

As for the date, he says it’s set but won’t reveal anymore information. He revealed to E! Online: “I can’t divulge the date or anything but we definitely have the plans.”

The couple met at Jennifer’s 27th birthday party in 2008 and have a six-month-old son, David Jr., together.

Grappler David claims their child is already trying to follow in his singer mother’s musical footsteps.

He revealed: “One of his favourite things is to hear the piano. Jennifer will play the piano or sing to him, and he will calm down immediately.

“We had a guy over once tuning the piano and he was pecking the keys, and David started trying to sing and imitate the notes. It was the most unbelievable thing.”

Jennifer Hudson is one proud mom!

The Oscar-winning singer showed off new photos of her nearly 4-month-old son, David, while on Monday’s episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Despite his young age, Hudson, 28, revealed plans to make her first born’s Christmas a special one.

“I’m going to go crazy,” she said. “He’s very aware but he’s so young and it’s his first Christmas, so you have to go all-out.”

She added, “‘I kind of want to get him his own Santa Claus and just have like a toy store in the house, full of things.”

Hudson, who is engaged to David Otunga, hasn’t stopped gushing about her son, who she says is full of “personality.”

“His favorite time to smile now is diaper changes,” she told People. “Or when he spits up on you – he just cracks up like he thinks it’s the funniest thing.”

Though she hands her hands full – she just signed on to play former South African president Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie in a biopic – Hudson said she is open to having more children.

“Maybe one more. I’d like to have at least one more, a little girl,” she recently told Access Hollywood. “I want a girl and then maybe another one. You know, one baby at a time.”
