Actress Julia Roberts has reasserted her Hollywood star status after banking a massive $1.5 million for a 45-second TV advertisement for Italian coffee makers Lavazza.

The Pretty Woman star appears as artist Sandro Botticelli’s Venus, the painter’s stubborn goddess muse who refuses to reveal her famous smile until she is handed a cup of Lavazza’s A Modo Mio coffee.

The heavenly promo, which didn’t even require Roberts to speak, will be screened in Italy over the Christmas period.
Roberts isn’t the only Hollywood actor to sign up as the face of a top coffee brand – her Ocean’s Eleven co-star George Clooney promotes Nespresso.

Oscar winner Hollywood star Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman), the recent convert to Hinduism, says “Diwali should be celebrated unanimously throughout the world as a gesture of goodwill”.

In her “Diwali wishes”, published on the website of India’s leading English daily The Times of India dated November 3rd, Roberts adds that essence of both Christmas and Diwali is the same as both “are festivals of lights, good spirits and death of evil”.

Roberts further points out that Diwali (Hindu festival which falls on November 5th) “not only belongs to Hinduism but is universal in nature and in its essence too. Diwali ignites the values of self confidence, love for humanity, peace, prosperity and above all eternity which goes beyond all mortal factors… When I think of Diwali, I can never imagine a world broken into fragments by narrow feelings of communalism and religion which does not care for human benevolence.”

“Ever since I developed my liking and fondness for Hinduism, I have been attracted and deeply fascinated by many facets of the multi dimensional Hinduism… spirituality in it transcends many barriers of mere religion”, Roberts stated. Talking of India, she promised “to return to this sacred land again and again for the best of creativity”.

Welcoming Roberts for attempting to fathom the depths of Hinduism and pointing to its universality, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that Hinduism had a universal appeal which was very practical. It offered something to every seeker of every path and disposition.

Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, suggested Roberts to achieve the “state of permanent joy” through various techniques mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures. She should realize the Self and practice regular mediation as right meditation would result in intense inner wakefulness. Taittiriya Upanishad told us that “meditation is Brahman (the supreme Godhead)” and directed us to seek Brahman through meditation. If Roberts needed any help in deeper Hinduism exploration, he or other Hindu scholars would be glad to assist, Zed added.

Roberts reportedly became interested in Hinduism after seeing a picture of Hanuman devotee Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba, who died in 1973 and whom she never met. She revealed in the past that entire Roberts-Moder family went to temple together to “chant and pray and celebrate. I’m definitely a practicing Hindu”. According to reports, Roberts has been interested in yoga for quite some time. She was in Haryana (India) in September 2009 to shoot “Eat Pray Love” in an ashram (hermitage). In January 2009, she sported a “bindi” (vermillion mark on forehead) during her trip to India. She has a production company called “Red Om Films”, and “Om” in Hinduism is the mystical syllable containing the universe. There were reports that she was trying to adopt a child from India and her kids shaved their heads during her last visit to India. Roberts, however, grew up with a Catholic mother and Baptist father.

Julia Fiona Roberts, one of the most successful Hollywood actresses besides a producer and fashion model, has won best actress Oscar for “Erin Brockovich” and earned Oscar nominations for “Pretty Woman” and “Steel Magnolias”. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. Largest of Hindu festivals Diwali, the festival of lights, aims at dispelling the darkness and lighting up the lives and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.

Catholic Church leaders have given Julia Roberts’ new movie EAT PRAY LOVE the thumbs down for ignoring the faith.

Catholic News Service officials in Washington, D.C. have suggested faithful film fans should give the adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling travel memoir a miss – because Roberts, as Gilbert, fails to seek spiritual guidance in Rome, Italy, during the ‘Eat’ section of the movie.

A review of the film written by CNS’ John Muldering reads, “Though she (Roberts’ character) seemingly hits every restaurant in town, she gives the churches a pass, the implication being that she knows better than to look to Catholicism for insight.”

The news service has given the movie an ‘L’ classification, suggesting the film may trouble some devout Catholics with “content many adults would find troubling”.

To make matters worse for Catholics, Roberts, who grew up a Catholic, has recently become a Hindu after spending time in an ashram while filming the ‘Pray’ section of the new film in India.

The actress recently told Elle magazine, “I’m definitely a practising Hindu.”

Julia Roberts
The Eat Pray Love star opens up

-On her family with husband Danny Moder: “The children became the shooting stars of him, of that thing we have. How lucky we are that we love each other so much that we burst into three pieces.”

-On her acting skills: “I have no acting technique. And there’s nothing more boring than actors sitting around talking about acting.”

-On working with directors: “I’m always asking those guys to tell me what they want. The same with George Clooney. ‘Name it for me,’ I tell him, ‘and I’ll do it.’”

-On behind the scenes with the cast of the Ocean’s movies: “Those boys! I was the only girl there. One day George Clooney put these giant potted trees in front of my door so that I couldn’t get out to work. I pride myself on being punctual! You didn’t want to leave your camera lying around, either, People were breaking into each other’s rooms, taking them, and let’s just say you didn’t want your mom picking up your photos at Walgreens! Photos of unidentifiable body parts.”

-On botox/the plastic surgery trend in Hollywood: “It’s unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don’t even give themselves a chance to see what they’ll look like as older persons. I want to have some idea of what I’ll look like before I start cleaning the slates. I want my kids to know when I’m pissed, when I’m happy, and when I’m confounded. Your face tells a story… and it shouldn’t be a story about your drive to the doctor’s office.”

The 42-year-old actress – who has five-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, and son Henry, three, with her cameraman husband Daniel Moder – apparently turned to the religion while filming her latest movie ‘Eat Pray Love’ in India last year.

She told Elle magazine: “I’m definitely a practising Hindu. Golly, I’ve been so spoiled with my friends and family in this life. Next time I want to be just something quiet and supporting.”

Julia now often visits temples to “chant, pray and celebrate”.

In ‘Eat Pray Love’ – which is based on a memoir by writer Elizabeth Gilbert – Julia plays a divorcee who decides to travel the world, before finding love in Bali.

During filming in India last year, Julia completely immersed herself in the Hindu culture and was “astounded” during a visit to the Taj Mahal.

The screen beauty was apparently “astounded” by the white marble structure, which is the most famous mausoleum on the globe and listed as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world”.

At the time, a source said: “Julia was breathless, absolutely astounded by the Taj. She looked on in wonderment as her guide explained the intricate patterns and designs on the marble surface.

“The Taj is a legendary symbol of love and hopefully the monument will be an inspiration to her for her latest film.”
