Kim’s dreams of a happy marriage and a family are crushed
Despite a freak snowstorm, Lavo nightclub in NYC was crowded with happy Halloween revelers when Kim Kardashian walked in at 9:10 p.m. wearing a Poison Ivy costume — but without her usual megawatt grin. “She looked fragile, sad and barely smiled,” says a witness at the Saturday night party. “She didn’t seem to be having any fun.”
Instead of being accompanied by her husband, Kris Humphries, Kim was with her longtime friend Jonathan Cheban. Kim “spent most the night texting and sharing those texts with Jonathan,” says the witness. “She never even took a sip of her drink.”
Two days later, the reason for Kim’s unusually dour mood became obvious when she filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
“I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision,” Kim said. “I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned.”
KRIS WAS BLINDSIDED
Though few of Kim’s friends were surprised by the news, her husband had no clue that Kim, 31, was filing legal papers on Oct. 31 before she flew off to Australia — a trip that Kris, 26, had expected to accompany his wife on. “It was supposed to be a second honeymoon,” says the pal. “But she told him she would be too busy. Kris was bummed.” Instead of taking Kris with her, Kim traveled with her brother-in-law Lamar Odom.
Even after Kim’s legal motion became public that day, to the world Kris seemed to be in denial. “I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce,” he said in a statement. “I’m committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.” But insiders say he’s already throwing several parties to celebrate the divorce.
OPPOSITES DON’T WORK
There have been briefer celebrity marriages, of course, but Kim’s union with Kris, who she married in a lavish ceremony on Aug. 20, did flame out extremely fast. Family, friends and insiders around Kim, who retained famed divorce attorney Laura Wasser to represent her, admitted that it was obvious from the start that the couple married too quickly.
“I could tell right away that they didn’t know each other very well,” Kim’s cousin Cindy Behr tells OK! exclusively. “At her shower, Kris was being a big, goofy, funny kid, and you could tell she was irritated with him. She was having a hard time even playing along.”
Kris’ inability to get along with Kim’s family certainly contributed to the split, too. “Kris fought with everyone — from [Kim’s sisters] Kourtney and Khloe to Jonathan to everyone in Kim’s life,” says the pal.
“They also have very different work ethics,” adds cousin Cindy. “Kim never takes a day off. I know he’s got the NBA lockout, but he doesn’t seem to be trying to find other work or even practicing every day. And Kim is also a perfectionist, who’s extremely clean and organized, and he’s not.”
Another problem was Kris’ difficulties with money. It was recently revealed that Audrey C. Hicks, a guest at the couple’s wedding, was arrested for an alleged $1.7 million investment fraud. It’s reported that Kris lost “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in the scam — a situation that was likely to have disappointed Kim.
“Kim didn’t have much of a married life,” her friend Jonathan tells OK!.
“[After the wedding] they went right into filming. It takes a toll. They didn’t have any privacy and no alone time. It’s a lot of work to stay married.”
A HARD CHOICE
“She didn’t take the decision lightly. She’s just really, really embarrassed,” says an insider. “There are no bombshells, no cheating scandals. Kim was really sad about this all; she just felt like she didn’t know who he was anymore. Kris wasn’t the person she thought he was.”
However, Kim did prepare for the possibility of a divorce by getting Kris to sign a prenuptial agreement that an insider calls “iron clad.” Insiders say that Kris will get nothing other than the appearance fees he personally earned during their brief marriage.
As for Kim, now that she has made her choice, she’s focusing on the business of being a Kardashian. “When something goes wrong, she throws herself into work,” says an insider. “Showing up at a club is a job; filming is a job. She loves her job, but at the end of the day, being a Kardashian is a full-time thing. She tried to find the balance between having a personal life and being happy and compromising with someone else while still being in the spotlight, but it didn’t work.”
