After months of refusing to comment on the public speculation about their relationship, actress Lindsay Lohan and DJ Samantha Ronson finally publicly confirmed their relationship in a L.A. radio call-in show last night, in a short, casual exchange confirming that they’ve been together “a very long time.”

Lohan and Ronson called into the radio show Loveline last night to chat with DJ Ted Stryker about DJ AM’s recent survival of a plane crash that killed four other passengers.

In wrapping up the conversation, Stryker casually asked Lindsay on air, “Now, you guys, you and Samantha have been going out for how long now? Like two years? One year? Five months? Two months?” Lohan responded, “A long…a very long time.”

“I hope you guys stay together, you’re a very lovely looking couple,” Stryker added, to which Lindsay replied, “Thank you very much.”

Lohan and Ronson are among only a handful of high-profile American celebrities in same-sex relationships, including women like Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Cynthia Nixon, Sarah Paulson, Cherry Jones, Suze Orman, Heather Matarazzo,Leisha Hailey, and Michelle Paradise. At 22 and 31, respectively, Lohan and Ronson are among the youngest out lesbian celebrity couples in America.

In a editorial on AfterEllen.com last week called “Lindsay Lohan and the New Definition of ‘Out’”, we profiled Lohan and Ronson as an example of a new wave of same-sex couples who are re-defining the notion of what being “out” means.

Lohan and Ronson have accompanied each other almost everywhere for over two years now, attend public events together, wear matching rings, kiss in public, and have had their relationship captured in countless photographs. They have even spoken out together against Gov. Sarah Palin’s anti-gay stance.

They have done everything but verbally confirm their relationship — until now.

But does acknowledging the relationship with words still matter in an era in which the grocery-shopping, event-attending, ring-wearing and hand-holding behavior of same-sex couples is now reported on almost as often as heterosexual couples?

While saying it out loud is arguably no longer a requirement to being out, words still have power — especially to the vast majority of straight Americans for whom the presumption of heterosexuality is so great they simply won’t believe a same-same relationship is true unless it is openly declared.

This is one of the reasons Ellen de Generes and Portia de Rossi’s “Wal-Mart wedding” makes such a difference — it makes the romantic nature of their relationship both appealing and unavoidable to mainstream America.

Lohan’s simple and low-key verbal confirmation of what most lesbian and bi women already knew may well do the same for a younger generation.

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson turned date-night into a family affair Sunday, when they dined at New York’s Bar Pitti with their moms, Dina Lohan and Ann Dexter Jones.

“All was calm,” said an onlooker. “They weren’t too animated.”

Later, after noshing on the restaurant’s Italian fare, Lindsay and Ronson slipped outside for a quick smoke-break.

All in all, the group seemed subdued but happy – and quite comfortable with each other.

“Dina tousled her hair a lot, like you see her do on TV,” said the fellow diner. “They all looked very natural, like they’ve hung out before.”

The elder Lohan has been vocal in her support of Ronson, who some see as a stabilizing influence in Lindsay’s life. As Dina told PEOPLE earlier this year, “Samantha is an angel.”

Lindsay appears similarly close with the Ronson clan. The actress was recently spotted hanging with the deejay’s extended family during a Miami getaway.

Samantha Ronson is amazed at the public interest in her relationship with Lindsay Lohan.

Ever since the two (who just returned from Miami Beach) began dating earlier this year, she says she’s been getting flooded with questions.

“Even the airport security guy in Canada asked me, ‘So is it true?’” Ronson, 31, says in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m telling you.’”

Of Lohan, Ronson said, “She’s great. She’s also 22 years old. I think people forget that.

“With the Internet the way it is, one second we’re enemies, one second we’re best friends, one second we’re lovers, and then we’re broken up,” she added.

In an e-mail to Bazaar, Lohan wrote, “I love the Ronsons. They’re close to my [heart] and I respect all the work they do.”

As for her romance with Ronson, she wrote: “Samantha and my relationship is a private matter.”

The actress recently lashed out at a Los Angeles police chief who tried to “out” their relationship.

Chief William Bratton said the paparazzi has tamed down since Lohan had “gone gay.” (He later denied making the comment.)

“Police chiefs shouldn’t get involved in everyone else’s business when it comes to their personal life,” Lohan snapped. “It’s inappropriate.”

Lohan and her girlfriend, Sam Ronson, recently fled restaurant Macaluso’s in Miami after a staffer there tried to turn their meal into a photo shoot. Our source said, “Lindsay and Sam sat down with friends and ordered dinner, when someone who looked like the chef or owner came up to them and asked if they would go to the kitchen. They were so nice, they went back and put on aprons and chefs’ hats and everything. But when the owner asked them to pose for photos, they became furious.” Lohan and Ronson “were so offended,” our spy said, that they left the kitchen, their table and the restaurant before their food arrived. The couple must have gotten over it pretty quickly, though – they were spotted later that night in the Florida Room at the Delano.

What’s one way to cover up a former flame and simultaneously declare your ladylove? Color in an old tattoo and have your gal-pal get one to match, if you’re Lindsay Lohan.

New pictures have surfaced of Linds and Samantha Ronson rocking identical small, black heart tattoos on their hands.

First acquired in July 2006 with then-beau Harry Morton, Lindsay’s tattoo (on her left hand between the thumb and index finger) was white in color. She has since had the tat outlined with black ink, and Ronson has replicated the heart on her own left hand.

Quick to reciprocate, Lindsay has also turned up with one of Samantha’s tattoos. Ronson has cascading red stars inked down her right arm, and now Lohan is showing off a red star on her right hand.

As recently as June, the ladies were seen at Mark Mahoney’s Shamrock Tattoos in West Hollywood (where Lohan acquired the initial heart with Morton in ’06).

Body art is something Lindsay and Sam have always shared a passion for. In March, Lindsay hosted a photo exhibit on the Sky Terrace of New York’s Atelier building, showing work the actress felt represented the mood behind her various tattoos. Naturally, Samantha was on hand to DJ.

After their affectionate weekend in Chicago for a music festival, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson racked up more frequent-flyer miles and touched down in Miami Monday afternoon.

The two – who “aren’t hiding their affection at all,” according to an onlooker – checked into the Delano hotel and are in town to see Ronson’s family.

Monday afternoon, they spent a little more than an hour hanging out at the Delano pool with the entire Ronson clan – a large group of about a dozen people.

“Everyone was having a good time. Lindsay and Sam were very comfortable with the group around. You can tell they’re so in love,” says an onlooker. “Lindsay seemed to really fit in. It seemed like everyone really likes her.”

Gay marriage may be legal in California now, but wedding bells don’t seem to be in Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson’s immediate future.

And if the couple were to wed, Lohan’s dad Michael probably wouldn’t play the proud father giving away the bride.

“I haven’t heard anything (about an upcoming wedding) from Lindsay, but if she was marrying Sam, I don’t think she’d ask me to walk her down the aisle,” says Michael. “She knows about my (Christian) faith … she just wouldn’t ask.”

That’s not to say that he doesn’t support Lindsay and a possible relationship with Ronson, he just supports her in more indirect ways.

“I want her to be happy and healthy and stay on the right path,” he says. “If I discuss (her relationship), I say that I want her to be happy.”

On the heels of reports that Samantha Ronson recently changed her Facebook relationship status to “in a relationship,” she and Lindsay Lohan stepped out in New York City in coordinated fedoras on Thursday.

At the Sephora Celebrates Ten Years of Glamorous event, the pair kept mum, but Lohan’s mom Dina gushed about Ronson.

“I love Samantha,” Dina Lohan told reporters. “She’s like a child to me. They’re great friends and as long as my daughter is happy and healthy, it is what it is.”

Ronson, wearing her usual skinny jeans and shirt, spun a mix of ’80s tunes and current hits throughout the night, and Lohan, in a slinky multi-colored sequined dress, jammed alongside her.

Lohan spent the evening, drink-free, texting friends on her phone, playing with Ronson’s deejay equipment and posing for pictures.

At midnight, the two left together, holding hands.
