The ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ star – who has recently been given the all-clear after treatment for cancer in his throat – was delighted to make his first public appearance since beating the disease to present an award at the Los Angeles ceremony.

As the crowd stood to applaud his entrance, Michael quipped: “There’s gotta be an easier way to get a standing ovation.
“Thank you all very much. I’m really very, very happy to be here tonight. It’s nice to be back, it’s my first time out this year.”

He then announced that ‘The Social Network’ had won the Best Picture (Drama) award.

Earlier in the evening, Michael – who was accompanied to the ceremony by wife Catherine Zeta-Jones – had spoken of his relief at beating cancer.

He told E! News: “Tumor’s gone, and this type of cancer doesn’t usually come back. I gotta check in every month. I’m so happy to be out. This is our first time out in months and months, and to be able to come to this thing cancer-free is pretty special.”

Michael, 66, was up for the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Gordon Gekko in ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’, but lost out to Christian Bale for his role in ‘The Fighter’.

The actor – who has children Dylan, 10, and Carys, seven, with Catherine, as well as 32-year-old Cameron from a previous marriage – is also reportedly in talks with a publishing house to write his autobiography, reflecting on his life in Hollywood, loves and his six months of treatment for his throat cancer.

Michael Douglas is reportedly in talks with a U.S. publishing house to lift the lid on his life for a new autobiography.

The Wall Street legend and his Welsh wife Catherine Zeta-Jones have had a stressful year following his shock throat cancer diagnosis in August, forcing the star to undergo six months of gruelling treatment.

He announced earlier this week that his tumor had been eradicated and book bosses in America are said to be keen for him to reveal all about his health battle, past romances and movie set experiences in a tell-all book.

A source said on Sunday, “If Michael agrees to write about his past and his marriages as well as his battle with cancer, it will be a bestseller without a doubt.”

Michael Douglas says his tumor is gone and that he may have beaten throat cancer. In a taped interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, Douglas said he felt relieved after a “wild, six-month ride.” Excerpts of the interview were released Monday ahead of its airing Tuesday on “Today.”

Douglas says the odds are that he has beaten the disease.

He said that he had lost 32 pounds, but was now working out and had put 12 pounds back on. He said he’ll continue to go in for monthly checkups.

The 66-year-old actor is set to begin shooting Steven Soderbergh’s “Liberace” in May or June, with Douglas playing the title part. He’s also nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”

His diagnosis with cancer saw Michael Douglas put his life on hold, now it seems the actor is making up for lost time, treating wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their children to a magical day out at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando.

The carefree family wore matching smiles as they took a spin on the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster.

Dressed in a casual white shirt, Douglas, 66, joined the fun as they whizzed past Hogwarts castle.

The family also sampled Butterbeer and toured Hogwarts Castle, while Dylan, 10 and Carys, seven picked out Gryffindor house scarfs in honour of their favourite literary hero.

It’s been a difficult year for for the Oscar-winning actor, after he was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer.

‘It really knocks you out,’ he has admitted. ‘You just never think it is going to be you. But I’ll beat this. The tumor is shrinking.’

On Wednesday, he was beaming from ear-to-ear as he visited Disney World in Florida with his family.

The Wall Street Never Sleeps star and Welsh-born Catherine, 41, who now live in New York, celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on November 18.

While Michael spent the Thanksgiving holiday in Florida, his father, Hollywood Legend Kirk Douglas helped feed the homeless at a pre-Thanksgiving charity dinner.

When asked about his famous son, the senior Douglas told reporters: ‘Michael is very good, I spoke to him yesterday.’
He went on: ‘He’s much stronger now, he’s feisty and he is talking about doing his next picture.

The ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ star – who was diagnosed with a tumour in his throat in August – is currently undergoing eight weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, and will undergo his final session this week.

His recovery is then expected to take a further six weeks, with the Oscar-winning actor then to be subjected to periodic check-ups.

Allen Burry, his publicist, told People: “No further treatments are scheduled after this week. He’s really happy about it ending. He was determined not to have a feeding tube, and he didn’t have to have one.”

Although the 66-year-old actor is expected to make a full recovery from the illness, he may not make anymore films.

Instead, Michael reportedly wants to spend as much time with his family, wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their two children, Dylan, 10, and Carys, seven, as he can.

A friend explained to The Sun newspaper: “This is a man in the middle of a gigantic fight, and he wants to conserve his energy and resources. If he beats this, he intends to focus on spending time with his family. He looks like he has aged 10 years in weeks.”

Michael also has a 31-year-old son Cameron – who is currently serving a five-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to dealing methamphetamine and cocaine – with his ex-wife Diandra Luker.

Catherine Zeta-Jones sparked fears for Michael Douglas’ health on Thursday after she cut short a trip to her native Wales to fly back to New York to be with her sick husband.

The Chicago actress was in the U.K. to launch the Ryder Cup golf tournament, but Douglas stayed in America to continue his treatment for throat cancer.

Zeta-Jones made an emotional speech at Wednesday’s Welcome To Wales gala concert, revealing her husband was originally meant to join her, saying, “Usually I would be watching with him. He would be representing the American team and I would be wholeheartedly representing the European team, but not this year, maybe next time.”

The star had planned to stay for the duration of the three-day event, but she cut her trip short and flew home early to be by her husband’s side, reports Britain’s Daily Mail.

Zeta-Jones further fuelled concerns for the Wall Street star by reportedly turning down a role in new movie My Week With Marilyn to spend more time with Douglas.

Veteran actor Kirk Douglas has reportedly moved to New York to support his son Michael as he battles cancer.

The Wall Street star was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer earlier this year and is currently undergoing intensive treatment in a bid to beat the killer disease.

His father has since spoken of his pride in Michael’s spirit as he fights the illness, writing on his MySpace blog, “I admire my son, he’s quite a guy.”

And now the veteran actor, 93, and his wife Anne have relocated from their home in Los Angeles to a temporary residence in the Big Apple to support Michael during his treatment, according to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.

The Oscar-winning actor is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment after doctors found a tumour at the base of his tongue but his ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ co-star Shia Le Beouf says Michael is strong enough to beat the disease and doesn’t need pity from anyone.

Shia told US TV show ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “Michael is the epitome of strength. I mean, he’s stoic, and I don’t think he would want any kind of sympathy call or check-up at all. In fact, I think he’s the exact opposite.

“I just think cancer picked the wrong guy when he picked Michael. Michael, he’s going to be fine. He’s got a good support system though. Good family, good friends. He’ll be fine.”

‘Mad Men’ star Jon Hamm – whose mother died of cancer -also spoke out about the 65-year-old star’s cancer battle, wishing him a “speedy recovery.”

He said: “I wish nothing but the best to Michael. He’s an amazing actor, and amazing filmmaker, amazing producer, and a career that is admirable in many ways, so I wish nothing but the best for a speedy recovery for him.”

The 65-year-old actor – who has two children Dylan, 10, and seven-year-old Carys with wife Catherine Zeta Jones, as well as 31-year-old Cameron with former spouse Diandra – remains optimistic about his chances of beating the disease and recently revealed the tumour is shrinking.

He said: “I like my odds. I’m not dealing with mortality issues until they tell me ‘Oops we have to go back and do surgery’ or something like that. The tumour is shrinking.”
