PARADE cover stars Penélope Cruz and Johnny Depp kick off the summer movie season in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The Pirates sequel’s biggest plot twist happened off screen, when a surprise stowaway was discovered about a week before filming began: Penélope Cruz learned she was pregnant!
“We were like, uhhhhhh,” recalls director Rob Marshall in this Sunday’s PARADE. “I said, ‘Are you going to be okay sword fighting with a baby in your stomach?’ But she was up for it. She said she’d understand if we had to replace her, but she didn’t want to be replaced. It took more time, ultimately. But she was worth it.” Cruz says, “It’s really amazing how generous and kind they have been, because there were a lot of things to adjust.”
So will this be the last of Captain Jack? Not likely, according to Marshall. “It’s like the James Bond series,” he says. “I think there are probably lots of stories still to tell.”

Penelope Cruz has been enshrined in concrete.
The Oscar-winning actress unveiled her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame star Friday, flanked by leading men Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp.
The event is timed ahead of next month’s release of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” in which she stars with Depp.
The Spanish star says that when she came to the United States in 1994, she only knew how to say “How are you?” and “I want to work with Johnny Depp” in English.
She jokes that now, she knows how to say “I want to work with Johnny Depp again.”
The 36-year-old actress co-starred with husband Bardem in her Oscar-winning role in “Vicky Christina Barcelona.” They welcomed their son in January.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ actress is believed to have given birth at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai hospital yesterday, Spanish newspaper El Pais has revealed.
The sex or name of the baby is not yet known.
For 41-year-old Javier, the child came on the same day he was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in Spanish drama ‘Biutiful’.
Penelope, 36, started dating Javier after they worked on ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ in 2007, and the pair – who had been friends for over 12 years before they embarked on a relationship – married in a low-key ceremony in the Bahamas in July 2010.
Although the pair have always been keen to keep their private lives away from the public eye, she has previously admitted she was looking forward to have children, even if it meant adopting.
She said: “I’d love to have kids. Maybe I’ll adopt about 20 children – that’s been my dream since I was a little girl. I want to have my own kids, but also adopt. For a while I’ve had the feeling that my life won’t be complete if I don’t adopt.
“I think I would be a perfect mother. I love babies.”

Penelope Cruz had a lucky escape during a Christmas Day trip to a basketball match when a towering player fell into the crowd and almost poleaxed the pregnant actress.
The Vicky Cristina Barcelona star attended the Los Angeles Lakers game against the Miami Dolphins in California on Saturday night with husband Javier Bardem.
She narrowly avoided an injury when a Lakers player launched himself into the air reaching for the ball and smashed into a row of fans just inches from where Cruz and Bardem were sitting.

The Spanish actress has released a statement through her spokesperson confirming she is expecting her first child with husband Javier Bardem.
The 36-year-old beauty was photographed recently with what seemed to be a baby bump while shooting scenes for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ and it has now been revealed she is four-and-a-half months pregnant.
Penelope has been notoriously private about her life, marrying 41-year-old Javier in a secret ceremony in the Bahamas in early July.
However, she has previously confirmed her desire to have children, although she confessed she would be happy to adopt.
She said: “I’d love to have kids. Maybe I’ll adopt about 20 children – that’s been my dream since I was a little girl. I want to have my own kids, but also adopt. For a while I’ve had the feeling that my life won’t be complete if I don’t adopt.

For years Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem tried to keep their romance out of the spotlight, but it was put under full glare in Hawaii earlier this week.
The low-profile couple, who have been the subject of engagement rumours in recent months, cosied up in the sunshine during a romantic break together.
The Spanish actress, 36, looked stylish in a simple one-piece black swimsuit while the actor, 41, wore matching trunks.
Cruz is in Hawaii to begin preparations for Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of the popular Disney franchise and Bardem, who recently finished filming Eat, Love, Pray with Julia Roberts, tagged along too.
The pair quietly began dating in 2007 and the relationship appears to be going strong.
Bardem even made a public declaration of his love for the brunette last month as he collected his Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
After accepting the trophy, he told the audience: ‘I share this joy with my friend, my companion, my love: Penelope: I owe you a lot and I love you so much.’
It seemed the dedication was entirely unplanned, with Penelope becoming teary-eyed as she listened to his words.
Cruz has previously said that while she is uncertain about marriage, she is very keen to have children.
She told the UK’s Psychologies magazine last year: ‘I want to have babies one day but not right now. When I do it I want to do it really well. I want it to be my best project in life.
‘I don’t know if I believe in marriage. I believe in family, love and children.’

The Spanish actress looked great in a skimpy black bikini as the couple frolicked in the sea on Fernando de Noronha, a cluster of islands off the Brazilian coast.
Cruz, 35, fuelled rumours that the couple are engaged with a telling sapphire ring on her left hand.
The star of Nine and her 40-year-old Oscar-winning boyfriend couldn’t keep their hands off each other as the spend time on the beach with the actor’s mother, Pilar, brother, Carlos and his girlfriend.

She turned heads at the premiere of the film in Rome this week, wearing a floor-length cream dress with floral detailing.
The beautiful sunkissed islands where Penelope and Javier are staying, Fernando de Noronha, consists of 21 islands and islets around 220 miles offshore from the north-east Brazilian coast.
Its main island has an area of 7.1 squares miles, the local population and travellers can get to Noronha by plane or cruise from Recife or by plane from Natal.
It has been previously owned by the English, French, Dutch and Portuguese and is now considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
