Actor Randy Quaid and his wife told Canada’s immigration board Friday they are seeking refuge in Canada because they are being persecuted in the U.S., after they were arrested on U.S. warrants related to vandalism charges.

The pair were arrested on Thursday afternoon in a shopping area of an affluent Vancouver neighborhood.

The Quaids are wanted in Santa Barbara, where they missed a court hearing Monday on felony vandalism charges.

Santa Barbara County Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter said Friday that Quaid and his wife Evi’s bail increased to $500,000 apiece.

Their attorney, Robert Sanger, said he hoped the situation could be resolved but declined comment citing the pending case.

Evi Quaid begged a Canadian immigration adjudicator not to force them to return, saying on Friday that too many of her husband’s actor friends have died under mysterious circumstances and she’s worried something will happen to him next.

Evi Quaid said she’s been told by a jail nurse that her blood pressure is dangerously high due to stress and that Randy Quaid’s mother has been hospitalized in the U.S. as a result of the stress from their legal troubles.

The Quaids said they came to Canada for legitimate reasons and had no intention of skipping out on a warrant issued for their arrest in the United States.

A U.S. judge issued arrest warrants Monday for the couple after they failed to show up at a California court hearing stemming from their arrests last month on suspicion of illegally squatting at a home.

Quaid and his wife face felony vandalism charges after more than $5,000 in damage was found in a guest house of a Montecito, California home they had previously owned.

They face no charges in Canada. The Canadian immigration adjudicator must decide whether the couple should remain in custody until their next hearing, scheduled for Tuesday.

The Quaids frequently missed court appearances in an earlier U.S. case involving charges they defrauded an innkeeper. That case was resolved in April with Evi Quaid pleading no contest to a misdemeanor. The charges against her husband were dropped.

Randy Quaid, 60, is best-known for supporting roles in films such as “Independence Day” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” He is the older brother of Dennis Quaid.

A judge issued arrest warrants Monday for Randy Quaid and his wife after they failed to show up at a court hearing stemming from their arrests last month on suspicion of illegally squatting at a home, a prosecutor said.

Santa Barbara Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter said the $50,000 warrants were issued after the couple failed to appear for an arraignment Monday on a felony vandalism charge. Carter said the couple may turn themselves in sooner, but their case will be called again on Oct. 26.

Randy and Evi Quaid each face a felony vandalism charge. Deputies arrested the couple last month on suspicion that they were living in the guest house of a Montecito home they previously owned. Authorities said at the time the Quaids were suspected of causing more than $5,000 in damage.

Their attorney on a previous criminal case, Robert Sanger, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Actor Randy Quaid and his wife are facing burglary charges in California after the owner of the couple’s old house reported they had been living there without permission.

A representative of the property owner called Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies Saturday afternoon to report that squatters had been staying in the guest house illegally. When deputies arrived at the house that evening, they found Randy and Evi Quaid, who said they had owned the property since the 1990s.

The property owner’s representative provided documents that showed his client had bought the home in 2007 from a man who had purchased it from the Quaids several years earlier. A contractor showed police more than $5,000 in damages to the guest house that he believed was caused by the Quaids.

Police arrested the Quaids on charges of felony residential burglary and entering a noncommercial building without consent, a misdemeanor. Police also charged Evi Quaid, 47, with resisting arrest.

Bail was set at $50,000 each. Messages left with Quaid’s attorney and agent were not immediately returned Sunday.

Last September, the couple was charged with defrauding an innkeeper of more than $10,000 as well as conspiracy and burglary after an invalid credit card was used at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Arnie Tolks had said an invalid card also was used at The Biltmore, a luxury resort in Santa Barbara.

Felony charges were later dropped against Randy Quaid, 59. Evi Quaid pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of defrauding an innkeeper and was sentenced to three years’ probation. She was also ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.

Randy Quaid won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of President Lyndon Johnson in “LBJ: The Early Years,” but he’s perhaps best known for his roles in the “National Lampoon’s Vacation” movies, “Independence Day” and “Kingpin.”

He is the older brother of fellow actor Dennis Quaid.

Randy Quaid won’t have to worry about missing any more court appearances after prosecutors dropped felony charges Wednesday against the actor.

Quaid’s wife Evi, however, will be on probation for three years after she pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of defrauding an innkeeper. She also will have to perform 240 hours of community service.

“This is a very fair resolution of the matter,” said attorney Robert Sanger, who represents the couple. “The Quaids are pleased with the disposition.”

The couple had been charged with defrauding an innkeeper of more than $10,000 as well as conspiracy and burglary after an invalid credit card was used at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Arnie Tolks said an invalid card also was used at The Biltmore, a luxury resort in Santa Barbara.

Prosecutors had a strong circumstantial case against Randy Quaid, but his wife was more involved with the transactions in question so charges were dropped against the actor, Tolks said.

“He really had very little to do with the ongoing negotiations and the attempts by the hotel to get payment,” Tolks said, adding both businesses had been repaid.

Randy Quaid is best-known for supporting roles in films such as “Independence Day” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” He is the older brother of Dennis Quaid.

The case was filed in September and prompted a legal saga that saw the couple arrested in Texas and California.

They missed several court appearances and were briefly jailed Monday after they showed up in court two weeks after missing their last scheduled hearing.

Evi Quaid intends to work with the homeless for her community service, Sanger said.

She won’t be required to return to court unless she violates her probation.

Randy and Evi Quaid were briefly jailed Monday after showing up to court two weeks late for a criminal case, authorities said.

The actor and his wife were released after posting $100,000 bail each and were told to return for a court hearing on Wednesday, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The couple have repeatedly failed to show up for hearings in a felony case alleging they defrauded an inn out of more than $10,000. They also have been charged with burglary and conspiracy and have pleaded not guilty.

Photos taken Monday by the Santa Barbara News-Press showed the handcuffed couple smiling as they were escorted by deputies. The Quaids spent less than four hours in custody.

Their attorney, Robert Sanger, has said the money has been repaid and the Quaids hope to resolve the case without a trial. Sanger on Monday declined to comment on the case or say why the couple didn’t appear as scheduled earlier this month.

A judge ordered the couple’s $40,000 bail forfeited after they missed a hearing on April 12. Arrest warrants were issued after the Quaids failed to show up the following day as well.

Randy Quaid is best known for supporting roles in films such as “Independence Day” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” He is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid.

The case has been ongoing since September. A criminal complaint alleges the couple used an invalid credit card to defraud the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito of more than $10,000.

Hollywood private eye Becky Altringer was hired by Evi last June before the relationship soured and she stopped working for the pair.

Altringer alleges the Quaids have become threatening towards her, and requested a restraining order against them at Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday.

Altringer tells RadarOnline.com, “Randy and Evi are bullies and criminals. They get away with s**t because Randy is Randy Quaid. I’ve been in this business for over 15 years and I have never seen the s**t I have seen with the Quaids. I can’t find justice in our judicial system so filing the restraining order has been the only justice I am getting…

“Randy is a well-known famous person and people are scared, or don’t want to cross him. I’m a nobody compared to him and I feel I have to take my story to the masses to be heard. I feel that I can’t let them get away with bullying, threatening and intimidating people just because of who they are. I have to fight back in any way I can.”

The private investigator alleges the Quaids made harassing calls to her on Monday.

She claims that in one voicemail, Randy shouted obscenities at her, before Evi accused Altringer of stealing from and stalking the couple.

Altringer wants a judge to order the Quaids to stay away from her and has requested they be banned from making contact via telephone, email, post or in person.

Altringer previously tried to get a protection order against Evi, but a judge denied the request due to insufficient evidence to prove she posed imminent danger.
A new hearing has been set for February 19, 2010.

Like his character on “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” a troubled Randy Quaid is heading out of town this holiday.

Both the actor and his wife were seen packing up their car and heading out of Marfa, Texas on Monday, after being arrested over the weekend, reports RadarOnline.com.

There was a bench warrant out on the pair for failing to make a court appearance in connection with an unpaid hotel bill in Santa Barbara.

Cops caught up with the couple over the weekend, arresting Quaid on Sunday and his wife, Evi, on Saturday.

At the time of the Saturday arrests, the Marfa Sheriff’s Department couldn’t locate an active warrant on Randy so he was not picked up at the time. But they returned the next day to arrest him once they tracked it down. He posted bail and was released the same day.

“They were both released from jail after posting bail and we saw them packing-up some belongings into their car and driving off,” says Daniel Dunlap, the mayor of Marfa. “They had not been in the town for a long time but just turned up out of the blue recently just before they were arrested.

“We had to tow their large truck from outside their building because we wanted to paint some new parking lines and word must have got out to them because they came back to get the truck,” Dunlap adds. “It doesn’t look like they are going to be in Marfa over Christmas and the New Year now and I cannot say what will happen to them in the future.”

Actor Randy Quaid was given a ride from a small West Texas jail to get bail money from a bank after he and his wife were arrested for allegedly skipping out on a $10,000 California hotel bill, according to the sheriff who drove him.

Quaid and his wife, Evi, each posted $20,000 Thursday night after spending several hours in the jail in Marfa, Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez told The Associated Press.

Dominguez said he drove the actor to a bank to obtain the bail money. Quaid remained in his custody during the trip but was not handcuffed. The sheriff said the actor received no special treatment.

“I like to help everybody out,” Dominguez said. “It’s a small town.”

A felony warrant for burglary, defrauding an innkeeper and conspiracy was issued out of Santa Barbara, Calif., for the couple after authorities received a complaint in early September that they had not paid a bill of more than $10,000 due to a local hotel, according to a release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

The warrant was issued after sheriff’s detectives filed a case with the district attorney. Santa Barbara County sheriff’s spokesman Drew Sugars said Thursday that detectives had not yet spoken with the actor and the department said it would not immediately release further details.

A message left for Randy Quaid’s commercial agent, Steven Arcieri, was not immediately returned.

The Quaids were arrested Thursday afternoon after a deputy spotted the couple driving in Marfa, where they had been staying at a hotel, Dominguez said.

Evi Quad “resisted a little bit, it wasn’t too much,” the sheriff said. “She calmed down quickly.”

Quaid won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of President Lyndon Johnson in “LBJ: The Early Years”; but he’s perhaps best known for his roles in the “National Lampoon’s Vacation” movies, “Independence Day” and “Kingpin.”

He also played a hard-nosed sheep rancher in “Brokeback Mountain,” then sued Focus Features and the film’s producers in 2006, claiming he was compelled to work cheaply when told the film – which earned $82 million at the domestic box office – had no prospects of making money.

A native Texan, he is the older brother of fellow actor Dennis Quaid.

Marfa, a remote West Texas town, is no stranger to Hollywood attention.

More than 50 years ago, filmmaker George Stevens settled on the area for his epic Texas oil tale “Giant,” which starred Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. (Stevens won a best director Oscar for “Giant” in 1957, the only win of that film’s 10 nominations).

More recently, “There Will be Blood” and “No Country for Old Men” were filmed in the desolate town of 2,100, founded as a railroad stop in 1883.

Randy Quaid and his wife Evi are wanted for questioning by the police, The arrest warrant is for defrauding an innkeeper, a felony, RadarOnline.com is reporting.

The website says an arrest warrant for defrauding an innkeeper – a felony – was issued in Santa Barbara County.

RadarOnline.com reported last week that Santa Barbara police were investigating the couple for allegedly stiffing the San Ysidro Ranch hotel after incurring over $10,000 in hotel charges.

Quaid, 58, is best known for his role as Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon “Vacation” movies. The couple has been married for 21 years.

The famous couple have a history of eluding hotel bills, a source close to the investigation told Radar. The Quaids are also in the hole for $17,000 in unpaid bills to the Hotel Bel-Air and — shockingly — are said to be keeping an un-returned rental car in their Texas home.

Bail will be set at $20,000.
