Regis Philbin announced his retirement from Live with Regis and Kelly last week, after hosting the morning talk show for more than a quarter-century.

While the veteran TV star said he was retiring because he felt it was time, it turns out there may be much more to the story.

According to reports, Regis is actually retiring because ABC executives were planning on cutting his salary after his current contract expired.

Regis would supposedly have been receiving the cut in pay because the show is not performing as well as it has in the past and because he takes a lot of time off, leaving co-host Kelly Ripa to host the show with guest hosts.

The 79-year-old allegedly fired his agent Jim Griffin as he felt he did not work hard enough to make sure he kept his $18-$20 million salary intact.

Meanwhile speculation is rife that Ryan Seacrest is in talks to replace him.

According to Extra sources, Ryan’s contract with American Idol will be up for the first time in years.

And since ABC was able to get Ryan to host Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve, it’s very likely they could hire him as Regis’ replacement.

‘Regis is one of the guys I looked up to all my career,’ Ryan said recently. ‘I think he’s fantastic.’

Regis said: ‘I don’t want to alarm anybody,’ he began, then declared, ‘This will be my last year on the show.

‘It’s been a long time. It’s been 28 years,’ he continued, ‘and it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to New York, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days, you know, never even dreaming that I would one day have the ability, or whatever it takes, to get in front of the camera and talk to it.

‘There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera – especially certain old people!
‘It’s been an enormous thrill.’

The state of the art commode was installed without the ‘American Idol’ host and radio presenter’s knowledge in his Los Angeles home while he was working in New York over the New Year.

Ryan – who earns an estimated $50 million a year – came home to find his friend Laurence had the Toto Automatic Toilet fitted in his personal bathroom as a present for his 36th birthday, which took place on December 24th.

Ryan – who is dating Julianne Hough – told listeners to his KISS FM radio show: “A Toto is an automatic toilet. Laurence had it installed and I didn’t know about it. He snuck into my house with a plumber and had it installed.

“It has comfort functions, it has a remote control lid, at all times the seat is warm. It has buttons and lights all over it.
“You get close to it and it has a sensor and it just opens up.

“All night last night I had bottles of water by my bed drinking them, just so I had to go pee, it was so fun.”

Other features of the top of the range toilet include a night light, three washing modes, a hands free auto flush, air purifying system and an integrated warm air dryer, so Ryan won’t, in theory, need to use toilet paper.

“American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest polished his brand and picked up a little walking-around money Wednesday, signing a three-year, $60 million deal to continue on the radio with Clear Channel.

The deal, which replaces his expiring $35 million agreement, keeps him as the morning man for Clear Channel’s dominant top-40 station KIIS in Los Angeles and also will keep him on WHTZ (100.3 FM) in New York, where an edited version of his LA show is heard 10 a.m.-1 p.m. daily.

While the deal revolves around the radio show, Seacrest will also help create new on-air and digital “content” for the company and will be involved in the launch of a new projected record label.

This immediately raised speculation that some performers from “Idol” could end up at the new label.

Seacrest also will continue hosting the weekly syndicated radio countdown “American Top 40.”

Seacrest’s daily show is a classic top-40 production, a fast-paced mixture of hit music and pop culture tidbits. Seacrest’s “Idol” ties have often given him an inside track to performers and interviews.

His personal style is pleasant, upbeat and inoffensive, a combination that has given him longevity not always enjoyed by more distinctive personalities.

His lucrative multimedia success has led the business to compare him with Dick Clark, one of the first rock ‘n’ roll radio personalities to become involved in multiple aspects of the music business.

It appears that the holiday romance is still going strong for Ryan Seacrest.

The 35-year-old TV host and his dancer girlfriend Julianne Hough, 21, headed out for brunch on Sunday morning to the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

The attractive couple, who recently returned from a holiday in Italy, appeared relaxed and happy, even greeting a fan as they waited for their car in the hotel’s valet area.

The pair then went for a drive around Beverly Hills in Ryan’s convertible Aston Martin.

American Idol host Ryan and Dancing with the Stars pro, Julianne have been dating for several months but only went public with their relationship at the beginning of June.

Their relationship stalled initially because, as Julianne recently admitted, she had assumed that Ryan was gay.

‘He totally wasn’t my type,’ she said about hard working host.

‘I thought he was gay.’

‘After a few years, he was persistent so I went out with him on a date and I realized how much I liked him,’ Hough purportedly added.

On their recent Italian trip they were seen looking very much in love, walking hand in hand through Portofino and photographed kissing a cuddling aboard a luxury yacht.

Ryan waded into the American Idol new judge debate last week claiming it could be ‘weeks’ before we find out for certain who is set to takeover from the departed Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres on the show.

While dining at Abe & Arthur’s with Rob Thomas, Seacrest sent over a $1,000 bottle of Dom Perignon to John Legend’s table with a candle wishing him a happy birthday.

Legend then invited him to join his celebra tion downstairs at club SL, where the “American Idol” host’s generosity continued — he sent over another bottle of Dom Perignon to Ludacris’ table. And at the end of the night, Seacrest left a $5,000 tip. Others at Legend’s birthday bash included Zach Braff, Lindsay Lohan, Kid Cudi, Estelle and Ryan Leslie.

A judge granted “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest a temporary restraining order against a man arrested on suspicion of stalking the radio and television host outside his workplace on Friday, court records show.

Seacrest’s attorneys obtained the stay-away order hours after they say Chidi Benjamin Uzomah Jr. was detained at the E! Entertainment Television headquarters in Los Angeles.

The filing claims Uzomah was carrying a knife and was trying to see the popular television and radio host.

Uzomah, 25, is on probation for another incident involving Seacrest. Court records show he pleaded guilty in Orange County, Calif., last month to three misdemeanors: carrying a switchblade knife, assault and battery. Uzomah was charged after he attacked one of Seacrest’s bodyguards outside an event.

“His aggressive and violent efforts to come into physical contact with me are extremely frightening to me,” Seacrest wrote in a declaration filed Friday. “They have jeopardized not only my personal safety, but also the safety and well-being of those around me.”

Police said Ozomah was arrested and booked on suspicion of stalking. Jail records showed he remained in police custody Friday evening, held on $150,000 bail.

The filing states Uzomah tried to meet Seacrest at radio station KIIS-FM earlier this month, but Seacrest records his show at the E! Entertainment Television headquarters. Besides working as the affable host of “American Idol” Seacrest has numerous other gigs, including producing E! series such as “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

A court hearing on whether to grant a three-year stay-away order against Uzomah will be held on Nov. 17.

While we’re sure Ryan Seacrest misses his former colleague Paula Abdul, the (very rich) television host is excited for the err, “energy” the newly appointed Ellen DeGeneres will bring to the hit FOX show.

“We love Ellen, she is a superstar. She will change the sexual tension,”Seacrest told us at the Emmy’s on Sunday night. “Simon and Paula had a specific sort of tension, but this will be quite different…”

However fellow judge Randy Jackson (who went out of his way to greet Kim Kardashian and gasp at her lush curves amid the red carpet madness) told Tarts that he’s already got DeGeneres sorted.

“She’ll be following my lead, I’ve told her to watch the dog,” he explained.

Winner of Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Kristen Chenoweth and recent “Idol” guest judge also weighed in on the debate.

“I’m sad that she (Abdul) left because I think she had a heart, but I also think Ellen will fill that void,” said the petite blonde after wiping away her Emmy-winning tears of joy. “A lot of people will give Ellen a lot of guff for not being a trained singer… She represents a lot of America and there is nothing wrong with having her on that panel at all.”

We also caught up with ex -”Idol” Producer Nigel Lythgoe (who was disappointed but not surprised that the show once again lost to Amazing Race) at the FOX Emmy After Party and he too had quite a DeGeneres opinion.

“I think she’ll create another style, very different from Paula. If Paula disagreed with Simon she would hit him,” Lythgoe told Tarts. “But if and when Ellen disagrees with him she’s going to hit him with a tongue lashing.”

However the most eyebrow-raising “A.I.” comments of the night actually came from the show’s lone winner of the night, director Bruce Gowers.

“I think there’ll be a lot more fun on the show than there was before,” Gowers said backstage. “I think we’re going to get even higher ratings.” Ouch.

Sorry but just seeing Ryan Seacrest, Ellen DeGeneres and sexual tension in the same sentence is just plain creepy!

Police in Southern California say a man has been arrested for assaulting a security guard who tried to stop him from getting into a car with “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest.

Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams said Thursday that Chidi Benjamin Uzomah Jr. tried to enter Seacrest’s vehicle on Tuesday as Seacrest left a charity appearance at Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

Adams says security guards tried to stop Uzomah and a scuffle broke out. He says Uzomah is accused of choking one of the guards, who nearly became unconscious.

Adams says Seacrest pulled away and was not involved.

Adams says Uzomah was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon or force likely to cause great bodily injury. He’s expected to be arraigned Friday.
