Sean Penn engaged in attempts to secure the release of two Americans freed by Iran this week, flying to Venezuela to ask President Hugo Chavez to intervene with Iran’s leader, a source close to the release process said on Friday.

Since Tehran freed Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer on Wednesday details have emerged about the efforts to win their freedom, which involved the United Nations, Iraq and Oman — as well as Chavez, who is a fiery critic of the United States.

Venezuela’s deputy foreign minister told Reuters on Thursday that Chavez brought up the case with his Iranian ally Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after being alerted to the Americans’ plight by friends in U.S. “intellectual circles.”

“The American ‘intellectual’ who took up the case with him was Sean Penn,” the source told Reuters.

“Penn was very committed to the case … He flew to Caracas several months ago to raise it with Chavez and he kept on it,” the source said.

Penn’s spokeswoman in the United States confirmed this account, but would give no further details.

The two Americans had been in Iranian custody since their arrest in July 2009 on the border with Iraq, where they said they were hiking. They were jailed for espionage.

Penn, known for his political and social activism, won best actor Oscars for his roles in the Clint Eastwood-directed drama “Mystic River” in 2003 and as slain gay politician Harvey Milk in the 2008 movie “Milk.”

The actor, screenwriter and film director was sharply critical of the administration of former U.S. President George W. Bush, and was involved in humanitarian efforts following Haiti’s earthquake and Hurricane Katrina.

In January, Chavez joked that Washington should end a diplomatic stand-off with Caracas by appointing either Penn, Bill Clinton or director Oliver Stone as its next ambassador to Venezuela. “We have a lot of friends there,” Chavez said.

The source said the State Department had been aware of Chavez’s involvement in the attempts to free the hikers and did not try to block it. On Thursday, a State Department spokesman said only that they were happy Fattal and Bauer were safe.

The Oscar-winning actor – who recently split from actress Scarlett Johansson after a three-month romance – is dating Stacey Koplin and the pair are currently enjoying a romantic break at exclusive Beverly Hills hotel Peninsula, where spotted having breakfast on the roof.

An onlooker said: “She came up to the roof with wet hair, he looked totally frazzled. They ate and had coffee, but they were talking about something intense. They were deep in conversation the entire time.”

Sean, 50, split from 26-year-old Scarlett in June because he wasn’t ready for a ‘serious’ relationship.

The couple reportedly started dating in February soon after she and husband Ryan Reynolds broke up but pals say Sean – whose 14-year marriage to Robin Wright was officially ended in July 2010 – didn’t want to rush into another long term relationship.

A friend said that although “Scarlett pursued him”, Sean was determined not to get into anything “serious”.
Scarlett initially struck up a friendship with Sean when she was considering flying to Haiti to help people affected by the two earthquakes in January 2010.

A source explained: “Scarlett first reached out to Sean when she was planning to visit Haiti with Oxfam. She knew Sean was living there in a tent and turned to him for advice.”

Although Scarlett wasn’t able to make the trip, the couple started dating when they both became single and made their first public appearance together at the wedding of Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth in March.

Sean Penn has moved on to another beauty — he had a dinner date the other night with Garcelle Beauvais at the Sunset Tower Hotel in LA. Penn and the Haitian-American beauty sat at a front table but later moved to a more private area near the pool.

Penn has been a huge force in helping to rebuild Haiti, while Beauvais, who lost a great aunt in the earthquake, helped raise money and appeared in the film “Eyes To See” about the tragedy. Beauvais split from Mike Nilon last year when he allegedly cheated on her and she sent his CAA colleagues a scathing e-mail.

The pair sparked speculation their romance was in trouble when the actress failed to attend the Cannes film festival in France last month with Sean for his film ‘Tree of Life’.

Instead, she was said to be concentrating on her new film ‘The Avengers’ in New Mexico, where she is reprising her role of Black Widow from ‘Iron Man 2′.

Now a source has confirmed to People they have split, although the reasons behind their parting are not yet known.

Scarlett, 26, and Sean, 50, started dating in February, shortly after the ‘Lost in Translation’ star split from husband Ryan Reynolds, and in April sources suggested they were already moving in together.

An insider said the actress had “essentially moved in over the last few weeks,” to the ‘Milk’ actor’s $3.8 million Malibu home.

Scarlett initially struck up a friendship with Sean – who divorced wife Robin Wright in 2010 after 13 years together – when she was considering flying to Haiti to help people affected by the two earthquakes in January 2010.

A source explained: “Scarlett first reached out to Sean when she was planning to visit Haiti with Oxfam. She knew Sean was living there in a tent and turned to him for advice.”

Although Scarlett wasn’t able to make the trip, the couple started dating and made their first public appearance together at the wedding of Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth in March.

They were then spotted at a number of public engagements together, including a White House Correspondents’ Dinner party in Washington D.C. in April.

Representatives for the couple declined to comment.

Hollywood stars Sean Penn and Scarlett Johansson have fuelled reports of a budding romance after enjoying a cozy lunch date together in Los Angeles on Monday.

The actor, 50, finalized his divorce from his wife Robin Wright Penn last year, while Lost In Translation beauty Johansson split from husband Ryan Reynolds in December.

Speculation that Penn and Johansson were dating emerged in January, prompting firm denials from the 26-year-old actress’ representatives.

But new photos of the rumored couple, obtained by Tmz.com, seem to suggest they’re more than just friends – the blonde beauty is caught resting her foot in Penn’s lap while dining at Cuban restaurant Versailles in the shots.

Rival Haiti relief workers Sean Penn and Wyclef Jean were involved in a tense confrontation at a top New York music venue after trading a series of bitter public insults.

Penn and Wyclef have been at each other’s throats after Penn criticized Wyclef’s ill-fated bid to become president of Haiti, blasted him as a “personality that threatens to create a new swell of social unrest in a plagued country” and accused him of deserting the country when it most needed help.

The former Fugee then lashed back by saying: “I got a message for Sean Penn: Maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine.”

Penn’s rep shot back at Jean’s comments as “highly irresponsible and false.”

But Penn and Wyclef bumped into each other at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in Times Square early Saturday morning after they arrived separately to see Haitian band T-Vice, and locked themselves in a backstage dressing room for a 30-minute argument before emerging, having made peace.

A source told us: “They were both in the venue, and when they saw each other at around 1 a.m., they started a confrontation. Things seemed pretty tense, and everyone around them was nervous. They then asked staff if they could go somewhere private, so they were led into a dressing room backstage where they could be alone and shut the door.

They weren’t yelling and screaming, but they had it out and aired their differences for 30 minutes. When they came out they hugged each other, they went onstage and stood side-by-side.”

Drink in hand, Penn then took the mike and gestured at Wyclef and Michel Martelly, who is running for president of Haiti and urged the crowd to support them. He said: “In Haiti, we have got an opportunity as Americans whether you are from Haitian diaspora or pr – - ks like me . . . These two men beside me will lead the way if you support them . . . let’s move on for some fun.”

Also watching was fellow Fugee Pras, actress Paz de la Huerta, actor Jeffrey Wright and nightlife queen Amy Sacco.

Wyclef’s reps didn’t get back to the media. Penn’s rep declined to comment about Wyclef.

The ‘Milk’ actor – whose 14-year marriage to Robin Wright was officially ended in July 2010 – admits his life has changed in many ways since the separation and is upset he will no longer be able to raise his family, including children Dylan, 19, and Hopper, 17, in a traditional way.

He said: “A profound change in life for me personally was not being able to raise my son in a whole family through high school.

“I got practical issues, like everybody … I had just got taken for one half of everything I had in the divorce, so it’s not like I don’t have to work.”

However, the 50-year-old star will be spending his free time on the earthquake-struck Caribbean island of Haiti, where he has been undertaking charity work since the disaster in early 2010.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “This is where I’ll be when I’m not working, for the rest of my life.”

Sean – who was married to pop star Madonna from 1985 to 1989 – had a troubled relationship with former wife Robyn.
Having initially filed for divorce in 2007, the pair reconciled in 2008 before filing for legal separation in April 2009, only to call off proceedings the next month.

The final divorce petition was entered in August 2009.

Sports Illustrated supermodel Jessica White was arrested Saturday morning after she allegedly hit a woman repeatedly in the face in a vicious catfight over a taxi outside a downtown club.

White, who’s been dating Sean Penn, was charged with misdemeanor assault and released after allegedly yanking the woman’s hair and striking her face with her hand.

According to witnesses, White walked to 10th Avenue at about 4:50 a.m. to hail a taxi after leaving a Chelsea club. But while standing on the corner of West 17th Street, she got into a dispute with “a 28-year-old woman.”

According to the court complaint, White “pulled the victim’s hair and struck [the victim] numerous times in the face with her hand, causing abrasions, swelling and substantial pain.”

White, a rough-and-tumble native of Buffalo, is no stranger to trouble with the law. According to reports, she once allegedly damaged a girl’s car with a baseball bat during an argument when she was a teenager.

Fashion-industry insiders describe the swimsuit beauty as a “firecracker.” “She was troublesome on shoots,” said one source. “She would chain-smoke on set, snap at the hairdressers and the makeup artists. She changed agencies several times because she’s supposedly difficult to work with.”

White has been represented by IMG Modeling, One Model Management, Wilhelmina Models and Elite Model Management, and recently re-signed with IMG.

Her on-again, off-again boyfriend Penn is a hothead himself, having had several run-ins with paparazzi. In February, he was sentenced to three years’ probation and 300 hours of community service for kicking a photographer. His fiery relationship with ex-wife Madonna led the pair to be dubbed “The Poison Penns.”

Reps for IMG deferred comment to White’s lawyer, Jeffrey Mennen, who said, “The police report doesn’t sound like Jessica, and she must have been provoked.

The ‘Yele Haiti’ singer accused the actor of not noticing the good work he has been doing in the earthquake stricken country because he was too busy taking illegal drugs.

He said: “I got a message for Sean Penn – maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine.”

Although both stars have been heavily involved in aid work in Haiti since its capital, Port Au Prince, was hit by an earthquake which claimed 230,000 lives in January, a bitter war of words has broken out between the pair after Wyclef announced his intentions to run for president of the country in August.

Hitting out at him, Sean said he felt Wyclef’s campaign was “about a vision of flying around the world, talking to people”.

He later said: “As an ambassador at large, he has been virtually silent.”

He also wrote in a newspaper column: “None among us felt or expressed anger toward it, but rather a universal sadness for his silence, as he is America’s most admired cultural link to Haiti.”

Sean has also quickly refuted Wyclef’s outburst, calling it “highly irresponsible and false.”

A spokesperson for the actor, Mara Buxbaum, said in a statement: “Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti. As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body’s immune system thru the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous.

“More specifically, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (a.k.a. JPHRO) has a ZERO tolerance policy for any and all illegal drugs.

“As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it. That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising.”

A few weeks after announcing his plans to run for president of Haiti, the country’s electoral officials declared the singer was ineligible to run.

A reason wasn’t given for the disqualification, but it is thought to be because the singer had not lived in Haiti for five years, a requirement for candidacy.
