The 1996 movie – which starred Will Smith as the saviour of earth after an alien attack – could get the follow-ups thanks to the success of James Cameron’s 3-D sci-fi epic ‘Avatar’, which was released by 20th Century Fox, the same studio that distributed ‘Avatar’.

The films would see Will return as Captain Steve Hiller and would be shot back-to-back as early as 2011.

Director Roland Emmerich and writer Dean Devlin already have a story for the first sequel.

Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman has previously confirmed he wants to make a sequel to the sci-fi movie, which took over $800 million at the box office when it was released in 1996.

Will has not starred in a film since 2008′s ‘Seven Pounds’, although he has worked in a producer capacity on the recently completed ‘The Karate Kid’, which stars his son Jaden Smith, 11.

The TNT network boasts “We Know Drama,” and the cast and crew on its hit show “HawthoRNe” can certainly attest to that.

We hear there’s trouble behind the scenes of the medical series, and sources say it’s being caused by star Jada Pinkett Smith’s husband, Will Smith.

The cast, which also includes Michael Vartan, just returned to the set this week after an unplanned, eight-day hiatus – and although one source says it was because of an illness in the Smith’s family, another well-connected insider suggests it was imposed by the network to sort out all of the production’s complications.

The second snitch continues that TNT executives are blaming the show’s current issues on Smith – a co-producer on “HawthoRNe” – because he isn’t cooperating with the rest of the team.

“He is not currently shooting a movie, so he’s been a constant on the set in recent weeks,” the network source says. “He’s been inserting his input and requesting so many changes to the script that it pushed back the production schedule tremendously and caused everything to spiral out of control.”

Pinkett Smith plays a nurse on the hit show, which premiered last year to stellar ratings. But despite the first season’s success, our insider says her husband wants the dramatic scenes pushed to the limit – and he apparently submits pages of notes and rewrite requests to the show’s writers and producers each week.

A rep for TNT had “no comment” on the matter, and Smith’s flack said that this was “untrue.”

Nevertheless, our source insists: “Everyone is praying for him to book a new movie so that he will go away.”

Unfortunately, the “I Am Legend” star may be a presence on the “HawthoRNe” set a bit longer, as he’s still planning his next career move.

Variety reported on Thursday that Smith is deciding between returning to the third installment of “Men in Black,” or taking a role in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming fantasy-adventure “The City That Sailed.”

The apple never falls far from the tree. And that is certainly true when it comes to Will Smith and his son Jaden.

The official trailer for the remake of the 80s classic Karate Kid has been released by makers Columbia Pictures and Jaden looks every bit the talented actor that his dad is.

With father Will coaching him on the sidelines, the 11-year-old always had the best start for his acting career but filming was not just about being good on screen – but also mastering kung fu.

He underwent four months of kung fu training and impressed mentor and co-star Jackie Chan.

Smith, 40, has been keeping his watchful eye on his youngster as he also produced the film, called Kung Fu Kid.

The film, shot in China, has a slightly new twist to the original.

Rather than learning karate from an eccentric Japanese teacher name Mr Miyagi, Jaden stars as Dre, who moves to China and faces bullies who speak a different language and have a totally different culture.

He meets Mr Han, played by Chan, who mentors him in kung fu and teaches him that there is more to martial arts than fighting.

Chan was so impressed with Jaden’s martial arts he previously compared him to his own son.

‘He put my son to shame! I provided my son with the best martial artists in the world, and he could not be persuaded to try it. In just two months, Jaden had learned so much. He is truly a talented boy.’

It is the second time Smith has worked alongside his son. They starred together in The Pursuit Of Happyness.

This time, Jaden takes the limelight on his own. The film is out in July.

Jaden Smith wasn’t even born when the original Karate Kid movie was filmed.

But the 11-year-old seems to have had no trouble taking over the role played by Ralph Macchio in a remake of the classic 80s movie.

After four months of training, Jaden showed off his high-kicking karate skills in a photoshoot on The Great Wall Of China.

And it seems that despite his tender age, he has stepped out of the shadow of his famous father – actor Will Smith.

Jaden got his big break when he was picked to star as Smith’s son in The Pursuit Of Happyness four years ago.

And Smith even credited his son with helping him develop as an actor.

‘I started watching him,’ he said. ‘If he decides he wants to get up and walk, he’ll get up and walk. The cameraman will just follow him.

‘But I had my blocking; I knew my left leg was forward. I knew that I was saying it with my left hand every time so in order for them to make the edit, I would do it with my left hand every time.

‘He broke me out of a mechanical space.’

In the photos released by Columbia Pictures, Jaden, who plays Dre, can be seen high-kicking and laughing with his co-stars.
The film, released in June next year, will borrow elements of the original plot.

In it, a bullied youth, played by Jaden, learns to stand up for himself with the help of his eccentric mentor, played by Jackie Chan.
Chan will play Mr Han, based on the character Mr Kesuke Miyagi, which won Pat Morita an Oscar nomination in the original film franchise.

American rap artist and actor Will Smith and his wife, the actress Jada Pinkett Smith, will co-host this year’s Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, organizers said Wednesday.

The Dec. 11 show – a day after the award ceremony – will feature performances by Wyclef Jean, Toby Keith, Donna Summer, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Amadou & Mariam, a blues and jazz duet from Mali.

“The opportunity to recognize the laureate’s contributions to the world peace movement will be an awe-inspiring experience,” the Smiths said in a joint statement. “We are both humbled and honored to take part in the Nobel Peace Prize Concert this year.”

The winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize is to be announced in Oslo on Oct. 9. The award is always handed out Dec. 10, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896.

“We’re excited to have Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith join us as hosts for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert,” said Geir Lundestad, secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. “Together they’ve had a global impact on the arts and philanthropy and will be excellent ambassadors for peace.”

Smith, 41, rose to fame in the 1980s as a rapper under the name The Fresh Prince and as the star of a popular television comedy show. His many films include “Men in Black” and “Independence Day.”

His wife, 38, is an actress, model and singer-songwriter. Her film career has included roles in the “The Nutty Professor,” “Ali,” and “The Matrix Reloaded.”

Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, deny they are Scientologists and deny the school they founded is a Scientology school — yet they’ve replaced the head of the New Village Leadership Academy, Jacqueline Olivier, with a woman who’s studied Scientology, Piano Foster.

The superstar couple had home-schooled their kids, Jaden, 9, and Willow, 7, before opening the school last September in Calabasas, Calif.

They reportedly quarreled with Olivier over the school’s Study Tech curriculum, which was devised by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

A rep for the Smiths said, “Jacquie is no longer at the school for reasons entirely unrelated to curriculum. She is an excellent educator and fully embraced the school’s secular and open-minded approach to innovative teaching methodologies.”

But an insider told RadarOnline.com, “Her position was becoming untenable as she did not agree with Study Tech and felt uncomfortable with it.” Foster was described as “more ‘in-line’ with their thinking.”

While Smith’s spokeswoman describes Foster as a Catholic, not a Scientologist, Radar reports Foster completed a Scientology Basic Study Manual course in 2005.

One of Study Tech’s harshest critics, Dr. David S. Touretsky of Carnegie Mellon University, said, “Children are inculcated with Scientology jargon and are led to regard L.R. Hubbard as an authority figure. They are laying the groundwork for later bringing people into Scientology.”

In June, Olivier defended Study Tech, telling the Los Angeles Times: “People tend to think Study Technology is a subject, but it is really just the way the subject is taught . . . the methodology doesn’t have anything to do with content.”

Touretsky said, “Study Tech is no more a secular learning methodology than wine and communion wafers are a Sunday morning snack.”
