While the Queen of Pop, Madonna, is still prancing around a stage looking ultra-fit in a high-cut leotard, the King looks in somewhat of a sorry state.
It was a stick-thin and gaunt Michael Jackson who emerged from his reclusive existence to be photographed the day before he reaches his landmark age.
Although his face appears frozen in time, Jackson looks far from youthful.
And he is so thin, he looks as if he might break if he were to strike one of his much-copied dance poses.
Even more strangely, the singer was wandering around Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas in an odd combination of tuxedo jacket, what looks like pyjama trousers and his trademark penny loafers.
Computer experts have revealed an image of how Jackson would look now if he had not had plastic surgery.
And if his complexion had not lightened – an effect caused, he has said, by a skin complaint.
However, the reality is clearly not as kind.
Now, fresh fears have been raised over the health of the singer because of his increasingly frail appearance.
Jackson has been a near-recluse since he was cleared of child abuse in 2005, and is £25m in debt.
He is seen out occasionally with his children – 11-year-old Prince Michael I, Paris, 10, and Prince Michael II, aged six – surrounded by minders, and sometimes takes to a wheelchair.
Jackson is releasing a new album for his 50th, intended to boost his flagging career.
